Pres, you're missing the obvious!!!
You know how a null modem cable has the two wires crossed over?
So, I reckon the bit you're overlooking is that you need to
bounce the IR signal from one to the other *via a mirror*...

You're just making it complicated!

All you need to do is turn one of the Libs up-side-down :-)

Sometimes I prefer to have the keyboards side-by-side,
or, for games, it is OK with 2 Lib50 back to back (direct beam),
but with Lib50 and Lib100,and direct beam,
the Lib50 owner can see the Lib100 screen.
So you must use a mirror:

Okay... IPX/SPX are installed on each Lib, and Dial-Up Adaptor on both
already had bindings to IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, and TCP/IP.

I still had no luck connecting with DCC trying most available ports.

I noticed in the Network settings that both the 'Ifrared Adaptor' and
'Ifrared Protocol' were indentified as being 'serial'. I usually use
'Parallel cable on LPT1' for the cable I have.

I think you want to avoid thinking about the infrared stuff in the
networking area

You DO have MSIR20 Infared Monitor working, right?

I have the Ifrared in W98 working properly on each Lib if that's MSIR20.

providing application support on COMx?

In System Information Components Ports ... Infrared is listed both as a
Serial COM and a Printer LPT port. It doesn't indicate COMx or LPTx. The
only other reference I've seen to IR in the systems settings is the serial
IR protocal in the Network settings.

What I mean is, there is infrared hardware in the Libretto. 50 series it is
usually on COM2 set in BIOS...

Yes... that's how it's set in my Libs' BIOS.

1x0 series it is set by the driver, mine is on COM3.

Haven't found that setting yet.

IGNORE THAT!

Let the machine have the infrared stuff where it is. Now, the infrared
monitor, attaches to the infrared hardware and adds a virtual COMport.

OK, on the 1x0 it is enable in frared communication ( to COM3 ) PROVIDING
APPLICATION SUPPORT ON COM4 AND LPT3

Okay... Wonder where you find that setting though.

It supplies, roughly, carrier detect... when the infrareds are connected
there is a sound, and you are plugged in

Yes... I get that little chirp when the 2 Libs connect via IR.

So, the DCC software only is concerned with the application support port
COM4... I have only had DCC and printing success on COM4, not LPT3

I'll check again, but I'm pretty sure I tested connecting both Libs via DCC
on COM4. For me, DCC lists LPT1, LPT3, COM1 and COM4 as available ports.

I would go back to a serial CABLE, get DCC working, THEN swing to Infrared.

Well... I tested DCC on each Lib with the desktop today, and it all worked
fine. I have a parallel null modem cable set up on LPT1. I only have one
port replicator with me, so I can't test the connection between the two via
a cable.

I'll go test IR via DCC on COM4 again. Let me know if you have any ideas
what may be going on here.

Thanks!

Matt

Yup, that's the case. Just another COMport

So you just have the standard port references in DCC like Parallel cable

LPT1 with no reference to it being a virtual IR port.

Yes, yes, yes, the ports look like regular COMports. The IR stuff is behind
the scenes.

And you say that you are able to connect one system to another via an IR

If that's so... I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Well, you may not be considering that the problem is, gasp!, within Windows!

IIRC you need a networking protocol IPX/SPX ( normally for Novell ) to be
installed for DCC to work. See, even though DCC is a serial/parallel file
transfer, it uses Dial-Up Adapter and IPX/SPX to talk on, not NetBEUI or
TCP/IP like you would think.

Get Dial-Up Adapter installed, and bind IPX/SPX to it, at a minimum, and let
us know if THAT works...

Pres,

So I switched settings for host and guest to 'Serial cable on COM1'. That
failing, I tried to 'Serial cable on COM3'. Then I switched host and guest
for each Lib for these ports. Still no luck.

Just to review a list of things to check for DCC, I confirmed this old list
of David's for getting DCC going:

---

1) make sure it's a Laplink/DCC compatible parallel port cable, not a
standard printer cable!
2) make sure bi-directional/ecp/epp is selected in the bios.
3) make sure you've got IPX/SPX installed on both (known MS Windows bug that
DCC won't always work on TCP/IP alone).
4) make sure both PCs have the same workgroup name, different PC names in
Network control panel.
5) make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks installed in the Network
control panel and have Share Files selected.
6) make sure login to Microsoft networking is choosen, and that you do when
staring both machines.
7) make sure drives to be shared are set in My Computer by right clicking
drives, selecting 'share'and configuring settings.

---

However I have had DCC working previously. Strange though that I found
IPX/SPX missing today. I transferred some files with DCC just recently.

I did notice in the Network settings that the Dial-Up Adaptor settings show
a check box for binding it to 'Fast Infrared Protocol'. However try as I
did to get that binding to stick, at each reboot it was unchecked again.

I didn't have much more progress with other computer tweaks today either :-(

So, the DCC software only is concerned with the application support port
COM4... I have only had DCC and printing success on COM4, not LPT3

I would go back to a serial CABLE, get DCC working, THEN swing to Infrared.

No, the infrared monitor adds virtual comports ( for example providing
application support on COM4 ) so you use DCC to serial port on com4

matters not that the actual hardware is on COM2, you need the virtual port
provided my infrared monitor

I have never, ever gotten pure infrared networking going

I guess I should ask more specifially, do you have an entry in your lists of
ports in DCC that specifically istates that it is a virtual IR port? Or do
you just have entries for things like, Parallel cable on LPT1, or Serial
cable on COM2 without any reference to being a virtual IR port.

Though I have IR enabled and running successfully for tranferring files with
the icon in My Computer... I've tried all of the ports that DCC has found
on each Lib. None indicate that they're virtual IR ports. I've set up
every port in DCC on each Lib, and none recognize IR when I attempt a
connection between the two Libs.

Yup, that's the case. Just another COMport

So you just have the standard port references in DCC like Parallel cable on
LPT1 with no reference to it being a virtual IR port.

And you say that you are able to connect one system to another via an IR
connections using DCC between two systems, yes?

If that's so... I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Yes, I have IR on Libs and Satellite Pro.

I use Windows' Direct Cable Connection on COMx where x is the virtual
comport that MSIR creates.

What do you need to know?

BTW ZoneAlarm 2.6 makes IR very flakey. There is NO reason why this should
be...

I can't speak for 2 libbys but I've pushed files from my L100 to a number
of other Toshiba laptops running WinME and it all works ... just make sure
the IrDA ports on both computers are activated, point them at one another
then click 'Infrared recipient' in 'my computer' of the computer you want to
transfer the files FROM, then follow the prompts. When the transfer is
initiated, the recieving computer will pop up a prompt asking to accept the
files.

Ah yes, I had forgotten about that short method of Infrared Recipient...
that bypasses the notwork maybehood procedure... but somewhere there was a
Infrared Recipient add-on but I don't know if it was for Win95 or 98
regular...

Well my L100 is running a stock full install of Win98 with Toshiba's FIR driver (in
fact IIRC its the Win95 FIR driver on there) and the Infrared Recipient appeared on
'my computer'. The other laptop is running its factory install of WinME (its a
Satellite 3001).

Okay... I found the IR icon in My Computer, and am able to transfer files
between my Libs easily. It may be slow for large transfers as Raymond
pointed out. But it's extremely convenient for transferring a few small
files between notebooks. No need to have each Lib networked all the time
with cables and PC cards, and certainly easier than plugging in those slow
FDDs and fooling with FDs. Basically point and shoot! Nice.

Not that I'm interested in doing it, but I wonder why a serial COM or
parallel LPT port wasn't found in DCC when I had it search for new ports.

Pres... you say you got an entry there that specified it as an IR port? I
notice that in addition to adding the icon in My Computer, enabling IR also
added a couple protocols in the networking settings. Funny I can't get it
to appear in DCC. DCC might be a bit more convenient for more involved file
transfers, as it works more like Windows Explorer.
