Title:
Switch User+DPMS then click Unlock causes a delay with black screen

Status in LightDM GTK Greeter:
  New
Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  ed@userver:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Focal Fossa (development branch)
  Release: 20.04
  ed@userver:~$ apt-cache policy pkgname lightdm-gtk-greeter

I'm not sure if the issue is in the LightDM greeter, but it only
happens after I use the greeter.

I expect my desktop to get displayed soon after I click "Unlock" on
  the greeter.

What happens is that there is a delay with black screen of at least 2
  seconds (often 10 minutes).

   Details:

When I "Switch User" and then click unlock button, I get a black
screen with no mouse cursor for 2 seconds, and then black screen with
mouse cursor for approx 0.65 seconds for every minute my PC was in
DPMS (after 495 minutes in DPMS the black screen is up for a very long
321 seconds). If I'm on greeter screen and keep moving mouse to avoid
DPMS, then I only have the 2 second delay.

This only happens with NVidia drivers (nouveau drivers don't have any
delay at all). I tested on fresh installs of both Ubuntu 19.10 with
default gdm and UbuntuStudio 19.10 with LightDM and now UbuntuStudio
20.04 nightly build. If I prevent DPMS by moving my mouse every few
minutes, then I only have the 2 second delay. I am not able to
reproduce this issue on UbuntuStudio 18.04.

  Methods that cause delay:
  - Click "Switch User" on the Whisker menu.
  - Click "Switch User" on the "Action Buttons" on panel 0.
  - dm-tool switch-to-greeter (displays greeter)
  - dm-tool lock(starts DPMS, then greeter)

Methods that DO NOT cause delay:
  - Click "Lock" on the Whisker menu.
  - Click "Lock" on the "Action Buttons" on panel 0.
  - xdotool key Ctrl+alt+l (runs screensaver, only delay if click "Switch
User")
  - xflock4 (runs screensaver, only delay if click "Switch
User")
  - xset dpms force off (runs screensaver, only delay if click "Switch
User")

Another interesting symptom is that the first 2 second black screen
does have the mouse pointer in 19.10, but not in 20.04. Also, If I
Lock instead of Switch User, then my desktop comes up immediately.

Unlock dialog does not have keyboard focus

Status in LightDM GTK Greeter:

Bug description:
  From https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15281

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS with the XFCE 4.12 desktop (Xfwm4
window manager) on an ASUS ROG laptop. The primary screen is 2560x1440
joined to the laptop's own 1920x1080.

Small but nagging problem unlocking a session after it locks
automatically while I'm having coffee. As I return to the laptop the
screen contains one single widget, the unlock dialog, unsurprisingly.
The problem is that, in most cases, its password input field does not
have keyboard focus, nor does it get focus by a single mouse click.
Nothing happens when clicking the password field.

Restoring keyboard focus requires three (3) mouse clicks. All three
  are necessary.

  1. Click the username drop-down
  2. Select the current user
  3. Click the password field

At step 2 the dialog sometimes disappears and leaves a screen
containing nothing but background. I solve this by randomly pressing
some of the function buttons in frustration, perhaps F8. The dialog
  appears again.

At other times, after step 2, the dialog jumps to a different location
  on the screen.

When I lock the computer from the whisker menu, the screen goes blank.
It will remain blank even if I move the mouse, click or press keys. I
can get the screen back on with Ctrl-Alt-F1 for a command prompt. Or
Ctrl-Alt-F7 gives me large white text on a black background, saying
"This session is locked. You'll be redirected to the unlock dialog
automatically in a few seconds." And in a few seconds I do get an
unlock dialog in a few seconds. The system works normally thereafter.

If I close the laptop lid while the laptop is plugged in, the screen
is blank when I reopen it as above. Ctrl-Alt-F1 works as above.
Ctrl-Alt-F7 produces the "This session is locked" message, but it does
not proceed to the unlock dialog. This forces me to restart the
computer. Power Manager is set to lock the screen when I close the
  laptop lid.

If I close the laptop lid while the laptop is on battery power, the
screen is blank when I reopen it as above. Ctrl-Alt-F1 works as
above. Ctrl-Alt-F7 has no effect. This forces me to restart the
computer. Power Manager is set to switch off the display when I close
  the laptop lid.

If is suspend the laptop from the whisker menu, on restore it behaves
the same as locking the computer. Ctrl-Alt-F7 allows me to get to the
unlock dialog and continue using the computer.

Chromebook armv7 install of focal tarball, followed by manual upgrade
and xubuntu-desktop install. Selecting lightdm display manager
results in the above behavior. Switching to gdm3 *does* work,
however, requiring a full gnome-desktop install seems to defeat the
  purpose of xubuntu-desktop.

The workarounds using Memlock in the service file for lightdm have no
affect, and neither does a native arm package rebuild of 2.0.6. The
one thing that *does* work (besides switching to gnome) is building
the debian 2.0.8 package using ubuntu deb tarball. Otherwise all you
get are the log errors shown below.

The greeter log shows the following:

I've changed from lightdm to gdm using dpkg-reconfigure gdm and with

Because of bug #982889 , the lightdm is starting now later, when the

In order to provide a better user experience, I think we could provide
a fake plymouth-theme which would update the lightdm greeter.

The login screen would appear faster for the user.

For the progress information, the graphical element could appear one after
the other, step after step. For example :
  1. background
  2. top panel
  3. top panel with a few buttons
  4. top panel with last buttons
  5. login invite

Bug description:
dm-tool lock starts a new lightdm greeter (for unlocking) and a new
logind session. After unlocking the greeter disappears, but the logind
session never closes. loginctl session status c24 reports something
  like:

  c24 - lightdm (103)
 Since: Thu 2014-05-22 18:38:27 CEST; 30min ago
Leader: 7872
  Seat: seat0; vc8

Service: lightdm-greeter; type x11; class greeter
 State: closing
CGroup: systemd:/user/103.user/c24.session
└─7907 init --user --startup-event indicator-services-start

This results in an accumulation of stale lightdm sessions after using
  e.g. a session locker for a while.

I get this issue on a freshly installed and fully updated Xubuntu
  14.04.

This is request, not a bug.

On Xubuntu 14.04, lightdm-gtk-greeter is used in in conjunction with
light locker. When leaving the computer, user can hit ctrl+alt+del to
lock the screen and thus stopping others from accessing the computer.
However, all screens remain switched on for an indefinite amount of
time. It would be preferable if the screen switch off automatically
after a minute or so, or after a user-defined amount of time.

Unifying Receiver, making it impossible to type password in some cases

The layout setting would affect to a possible onscreen keyboard, too.

Currently system seems to try to detect natural keyboard layout, when
using a keyboard, but this does not currently work with all keyboards,

[Lightdm-gtk-greeter-team] [Bug 1677397] Re: lightdm-gtk-greeter SIGSEGV when invoked by Xvnc -inetd -query

Title:
lightdm-gtk-greeter SIGSEGV when invoked by Xvnc -inetd -query

Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  To reproduce:

  1. Install Xubuntu 16.04 LTS, update fully

  2. Install packages xinetd, vnc4server

  3. Append to /etc/services:

  vnc 5900/tcp# VNC Virtual Network
  Computing

  4. Append to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf:

  [XDMCPServer]
  enabled=true

  5. Create /etc/xinetd.d/vnc:

  service vnc
  {
  disable = no
  socket_type = stream
  protocol= tcp
  group   = tty
  wait= no
  user= nobody
  server  = /usr/bin/Xvnc
  server_args = -inetd -query localhost -once -securitytypes=none
-geometry 1024x768
  }
  # NOTE: might need to add an arg like ":1" to get out of way of local X server
  # my case is special as I am trying to run headless, nobody is logged in on
console

  6. Signal xinetd and lightdm to reconfigure:

  $ sudo killall -1 xinetd
$ sudo service lightdm restart # or however your init system works

  7. Don't know if significant (I am 400 miles away from test host and can't
test):
do NOT have anyone logged in on the test host console. In fact, to most
closely
reproduce my case, shut down the test host, power it off, disconnect all
monitors
and keyboards, then power it on and access from the net.

  8. From another system, connect to the test host:

$ gvncviewer testhost:0 # Your favorite VNC viewer & test host
  name...

  9. VNC connects briefly, displays grey hashed background, disconnects.
Syslog on
  test host says:

Title:
Lubuntu 17.04 LightDM Greeter panel font hard to read

Status in lubuntu-artwork package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The Host-Name and the clock in the Lubuntu 17.04 LightDM Greeter panel
are either the same color as the background, or are almost so - it is
impossible to read them, but it is - barely - possible to tell that
  they ARE there.

I have looked in the Properties->Installed Files for the package, and
discovered the file:
/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf (and then found the apparently
(originally) identical /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.d/30_lubuntu.conf
file in my File Manager - Nemo.

The only Panel options (changeable with "sudo lightdm-gtk-greeter-
settings") are "panel-position", "clock-format", and "indicators", so
I assume that the font-related aspects are derived from Appearance:
  theme-name.

  This defaults to "Lubuntu-default".

The only other option is "Lubuntu-dark-panel". This sounds promising,
and I have now set it to that, but have not yet logged out or in to
see if that solves the problem.

I will report back to say if it is now fixed or not.

As defaulted, it is impossible to read.

I note that the Panel Font is Ubuntu Regular - 0. I assume the 0
means "get actual font height from somewhere else"

15.10: No keyboard input on startup

Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Installed via using lubuntu-desktop. kubuntu-desktop also installed.

When the greeter first starts there is no keyboard input. It won't
even accept Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to VT tty1.

  If the mouse pointer is moved around the focus indicator follows it;
hover over the Password box and its focus indication is shown and the
pointer changes to a caret but no keyboard input is accepted.

User has to use the mouse to click on a button, drop-down combo, or
applet icon in the task-bar to gain keyboard input.

There are no indications in the lightdm logs of a greeter input issue.

Title:
settings allow arbitrarily large user pictures which makes the user
  lock themselves out at lightdm.

Status in LightDM GTK+ Greeter:
  Fix Released
Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
To reproduce on a fresh install of ubuntu mate 16.04 start lightdm-
gtk-greeter-settings and authenticate to start editing lightdm
settings. Please do not try to reproduce this on a production machine
as it will involve locking yourself out of lightdm.

In the settings for lightdm GTK+ greeter settings select a really
large image from a digial camera or high resolution screenshot as your
user image that is larger than your screen resolution hit save and
  then log out.

You will be taken to a lightdm screen that has a user image so large
  you cannot login.

Description: Ubuntu Xenial Xerus (development branch)
  Release: 16.04
  lightdm-gtk-greeter-settings:
    Installed: 1.2.0-0ubuntu1
    Candidate: 1.2.0-0ubuntu1
    Version table:
   *** 1.2.0-0ubuntu1 0
  500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ xenial/universe amd64
Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I would expect the greeter to check that it would not set such
redicolous file sizes that block the user from logging in or at least
provide a warning dialog that this could make you unable to login
similar to things that cause data loss on a partition in ubuquity or
  gparted.

As this prevents even loggin into guest session graphically. I did
manage to get back in editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf by
  hand with vim.

Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
lightdm fails to start with 3 connected displays but works with 2
  displays.

Once lightdm has started and displays the Greeter I can connect the third
display without a hitch.
After logging in I can enable the third display

  #!/bin/sh
xrandr --output VGA-0 --off --output DP-6 --off --output DP-5 --off --output
DP-4 --mode 3200x1800 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output DP-3 --scale 1.5x1.5
--mode 1920x1200 --pos 3200x0 --rotate normal --output DP-2 --scale 1.5x1.5
--mode 1920x1080 --pos 6080x0 --rotate normal --output DP-1 --off --output DP-0
--off

When lightdm is started with all three displays connected, it will
terminate and force the Xserver to go down as well, triggering a cycle
of Xserver/lightdm restarts. Disconnecting the 3rd display will bring
up lightdm immediately without a glitch.

  suspend

Status in LightDM GTK+ Greeter:
  Fix Released
Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
After resuming from suspend, the Xubuntu login screen is completely
gray if an external monitor is connected (see step 5 in the procedure
below). This problem started occurring after I upgraded to Xubuntu
15.04; it never occurred under the previous Xubuntu 14.10 version.

  1. Connect external monitor to laptop's HDMI port.

  2. Choose external monitor as the sole display to use (do not use
laptop's internal display at all: no mirroring or extending).

  3. Suspend the laptop (put it to sleep) by closing the lid.

  4. Wake up the laptop by opening the lid.

  5. The screen is now completely gray on both the external monitor and
the laptop's internal display. The mouse pointer is also visible and
it responds to movements from the laptop's internal touchpad.

  6. Disconnect the external monitor by unplugging the HDMI cable.

  7. The regular login screen now appears.

  8. Reconnect the external monitor by plugging in the HDMI cable.

  9. The screen is now completely gray again, just like in step 5.

Please fix this gray screen issue! Thanks for your consideration.

[Lightdm-gtk-greeter-team] [Bug 1312526] Re: Greeter uses previous session even if it is not available

Bug description:
I install using preseed files, and clobber a bit of /etc to configure
ubuntu to be suitable for users to login with network credentials. I
use pam to make a home directory when users login with network
  credentials.

On first boot, logging into the VTs works fine but I cannot log into
the lightdm dislpay manager. If I type my username and password
right, I get a "Failed to start session" message and get bounced back
to the start of the login process.

If, however, I click one of the session types, e.g. 'ubuntu' or
'fluxbox', then I can log in. (I've tried uninstalling fluxbox, this
doesn't seem to help). At which point I can login, which I believe
works until I reboot the machine. (I will test this shortly).

If I install the lightdm-gtk-greeter package then I do not encounter
this bug. Instead, I am automatically logged into the alphabetically
first session type (at least, if I've got fluxbox available vs. either
ubuntu or xfce, that seems to be what I get, if only ubuntu is install
I get an ubunut session by default so I assume the preference is
  alphabetical).

It does not seem to matter if I specify a
  user-session=something
(I have also tried not setting user-session at all)

in lightdm.conf (well, I haven't tried it with the gtk-greeter, but it
doesn't matter with the unity greeter).

I've tried all of the other lightdm-greeter packages, and lightdm-
greeter-gtk is the only one that does not suffer from this bug.

the most relvant message in the logs I can find is:

DEBUG: Seat: Failed to find session configuration true
  Seat: Can't find session 'true'

What I would expect to happen is to get some default session; getting
the alphabetically first session is kind-of/sort-of reasonable. Total
  failure is not.

  xfce autologin is not working

Status in LightDM GTK+ Greeter:

Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
On raring installation I have choosed to login manually.

Later after finished installation I have used

Settings -> Users and Groups -> "User" -> Password

to check the checkbox "Don't ask for pasword on login".

  A look at

Settings -> Session and Startup -> General -> Session Chooser

shows me that the Checkbox "Display Chooser on Login" was unchecked.

A newstart of the system brought up anyway the Display Chooser. Only
  the password request was gone.

  Scenario:

A user has choosen manuall login during installation and want to
change this after installation to auto login.

Autologin does not work, only password request could be disabled.

  Additional:

No other desktop manager is installed in parallel on the system.

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 12.10 (and perhaps earlier), if I start to type my password
at the login screen, but change my mind about the session to choose, I
can no longer click the session icon. Removing the password does not
help as well - I have to change the focus to a different account, then
  move back.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. At the login screen, start typing some letters (do not press Enter).
  2. Click the current session icon at the top of the right-hand side of the
username.
  3. Nothing happens!
  4. Remove the typed characters.
  5. Repeat step 2.
  6. Nothing happens again!
  7. Focus another account with the up or down arrow, then click the icon again.
  8. Observe desired behaviour for steps 3 and 6 (the session list appears).

Re: [Lightdm-gtk-greeter-team] [Merge] lp:~timp87/lightdm-gtk-greeter/opt-mem-lock into lp:lightdm-gtk-greeter

2020-02-26 Thread Sean Davis
Sorry for not seeing your merge request sooner. It's unfortunate, but there's
only one active maintainer for this project (myself) and I'm stretched thin.

We introduced mlockall and also removed it following the mainline lightdm
greeters. This was motivated by testing on the Raspberry Pi, where it was found
to not run at all in a high memory pressure environment.

Marking your MR as rejected to close it out. Thanks for the contribution.

We don't have any plans for this at this time. In the past we have
suggested just shipping a branded wallpaper or profile image to achieve
this functionality. If you would like to propose a patch, we are often
very open to accepting new features in this way.

Status in LightDM GTK+ Greeter:

Status in unity-greeter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
   affects lightdm

Lightdm version 1.21.5, in 17.04. Some components of the Unity and
Mate desktops are currently not accessible when logging in using
lightdm. So far I've tested and reproduced this problem with both
unity-greeter, and lightdm-gtk-greeter, so I suspect it is what I
mentioned in the title, i.e the X root window is kept around.

At-spi gets loaded in the greeter for use with Orca. At-spi ads a
property atom, AT_SPI_BUS, to the root X window to allow software to
be able to find the accessibility bus. If my understanding is correct,
this root window is kept around for the user login session. What then
happens is software either using Qt or Gtk loads its accessibility
support code, which in turn looks for the AT_SPI_BUS property.
Normally on session load, this property is not present, at which point
the support code then connects to org.a11y.bus, which in turn via
systemd loads the at-spi bus launcher and registry to respond to the
bus activation/request. At-spi adds the AT_SPI_BUS property to the X
  root window at load.

However the AT_SPI_BUS property is hanging around from the greeter
session, which is confusing software. At-spi only then gets loaded
from /etc/xdg/autostart/at-spi-dbus-bus.desktop by the mate or gnome
session binaries, but this happens after unity-panel-service and mate-
panel are loaded. As such they are inaccessible for the session, or
until the user kills them and they get reloaded.

I would expect the greeter to check that it would not set such
redicolous file sizes that block the user from logging in or at least
provide a warning dialog that this could make you unable to login
similar to things that cause data loss on a partition in ubuquity or

Bug description:
This problem applies to Ubuntu-MATE setups using out-of-the-box
  lightdm and lightdm-gtk-greeter settings.

  To duplicate this bug:

Create a new installation of Ubuntu-MATE. Create two users (user1 and
  user2).

Install a second windows manager (such as openbox)

Have user1 log in using the openbox windows manager and log out.

Have user2 log in. (Note: user2 is a user who as never logged into
machine and has no record of last session used.)

The expected outcome is that user2 will use the default session: MATE, but
the outcome is that
user2 will be logged into an openbox session.

lightdm --show-config shows that the default is set to mate:

[Lightdm-gtk-greeter-team] [Bug 1669818] Re: Ubuntu Budgie shows debian wallpaper due to greeter recommendation / lightdm-gtk-greeter does not compile

I'm in favor of getting the updated greeter into Zesty. We'll do some
testing on the Xubuntu side and confirm.

Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Ubuntu Budgie, like Xubuntu uses lightdm-gtk-greeter as its default
  greeter.

However, due to the recommendation of "debian-base" in debian/control,
we show all the debian wallapers in that package. Very confusing for
  users.

Please can this be changed to a "Suggests:" instead?

Note - I originally asked this Q on Debian, but they declined saying
  its a downstream issue

I was going to attach a debdiff for the change, but the current source
for lightdm-gtk-greeter zesty does not compile under zesty due to
lightDM API changes. Was the package simply copied from Xenial?
Which begs the question - how on earth does the greeter actually work
under zesty if the API has changed!

[Lightdm-gtk-greeter-team] [Bug 1622303] Re: Fails to unlock/ resumes to black screen

2016-09-27 Thread Sean Davis
I tried downgrading lightdm (and related packages) to their xenial
versions (1.18.x) and the bug persists, so it seems less likely to be
directly related to lightdm.

Sean Davis posted a new comment:
It is not possible to change the text of the login button unless you
build the application yourself or add a translation. These strings are
static so translators can add localizations. It may be possible with
some CSS wizardry, but you'd have to look into that yourself.

  2. Try to log in and find the entire screen is white, except for the mouse
cursor
  3. Pressing any keys on the keyboard does not change anything
  4. Pressing any mouse button makes the login screen visible the way expected.

This happens since the upgrade to 15.04. Its reproduceable always on
my main notebook but not on a 2nd.

gray screen shown when external monitor connected on resume from
  suspend

Status in LightDM GTK+ Greeter:
  Fix Released
Status in lightdm-gtk-greeter package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
