Hi Guy,

I'm not sure if this is of any help, but perhaps someone else will come
along with more to offer but...

Have you tried using Rumor with Frescobaldi (MIDI)? That works pretty sweet
from my experience, MIDI, etc. --> (at first I had major headaches using
Ubuntu, but once I distro-hopped, all was well)

Rumor:

Good luck!

Qsynth/Fluidsynt output on MacBook/Kubuntu

2014-08-31 Thread Guy Stalnaker
Dear friends,

I know this is not true "lilypond" topic, but I also know that many of you
have extensive experience using lilypond with various operating systems,
etc.

I have an old MacBook that I have repurposed into a Kubunty laptop. The
only serious issue I'm having is with audio ouput via Qsynth/Fluidsynt.
Audio works fine. I can test the audio successfully. I can play digital
streaming audio with Clementine. I can play lilypond midi output files via
timidity from the command line. All these work find.

But ... if I load Fluidsynth via Qsyth (which is how I use Fluidsynth on
two other Linux system) and then run Frescobaldi and play midi output
files, the sound is filled with so much noise it's hardly recognizable as
music. Sometimes the music will suddenly come through clearly, but most
often it does not. I've played with using both Alsa and Pulseaudio and both
result in noise. I have not, because I really loathe using it, used Jack
Audio.

So, two questions -- has anyone had a similar Linux experience where system
audio is fine, but Fluidsynth output is not? Second question is whether one
can use Timidity (in its server mode ) with Frescobaldi for midi output?

Thanks.

I rebuild the direct dependencies for lilypond and also for ghostscript
(including texlive-metapost), but that didn’t help. However, I encountered a
problem actually building lilypond 2.16.2 -- it fails with
freetype-error.cc:34:31: warning: freetype/fterrors.h: No such file or directory

The file it was looking for is actually at /usr/include/freetype2/fterrors.h.
I checked a few other freetype-dependent packages and also another distro
(Arch), in case it was a problem of my own (Gentoo). All use include/freetype2.
It’s EOL now, but could this be a bug in the lilypond code?

> I think that upgrading to the latest stable LilyPond
> release may help you (and anyway 2.16 is quite old).

I am aware of that, but apparently the package maintainer is not (the 2.18
package has been available for a while now, but not marked yet as “stable”
and I don’t want to customise my package manager setup too much).

> See http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/lilypond-devel/2013-10/msg00204.html
> for more details.

Interesting. What puzzled me at first was that both my machines had the same
versions of stuff installed, but still had different output. So I dug a bit
deeper and found out that the last time I actually built lilypond on the
working one it still had texlive 2012.

There is a separate metapost package available which provides version 1.803.
I installed that, set the system to use it and rebuilt lilypond. Now the
output is fine again. I’ll remember that for later.

Cheers.

Yes, appended.

Note that although the result compiles without error, there appear to be
defects in the generated pdf in that several text strings lie partially outside
the page.

(It’s also curious that the comment in line 6 was changed from <% \version

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! My ossia contains a ChoirStaff and at

The filled-box workaround did the trick for me.

modalTranspose with chromatic

2014-08-31 Thread bobr...@centrum.is
I'm having a problem with chromatic scales and \modalTranspose. According to:
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.18/Documentation/notation/changing-multiple-pitches#modal-transformations
it should be possible to do what I want. Ascending passages work as expected.
Descending ones do not. I get an unexpected octave displacement. The
following code produces the odd result. What I want is for each descending
motive to simply descend a chromatic octave without leaping up an octave. What
is going on and how can I achieve my desired result?

-David

%

\version "2.18.0"

chromaticScaleUp = \relative c { c cis d dis e f fis g gis a ais b }

chromaticScaleDown = \relative c { c b bes a as g ges f e es d des }

  c8 cis d dis e f
  fis g gis a ais b

motiveDown = \relative c' {
