Re: basic question regarding \drummode

2016-11-04 Thread Edward Ardzinski

Shouldn't any tonal parts be a specific instrument (such as a vibraphone)?
Each instrument should have it's own staff, regardless if more than one voice
is handled by a single performer.

In the case the players are moving around, and say there are times where player
A plays the snare while player B is on the vibes, then later the roles are
reversed, I'd use four separate staffs.

Re: Question for a FLOSS licensing session

After reading these replies I may not be wiser...but it did occur to me that
there might be a flaw in my thinking as I do the "programming" with
Frescobaldi. Does that have an impact on any of these issues? Would have
been changed looking back to the "old days" when I used my own editor I
wrote in Visual C++?

Re: Question for a FLOSS licensing session

2016-10-30 Thread Edward Ardzinski

Does this matter to the average user? Probably not. But some here use LP for
more than I do.

But I'm not sure why the programming should be separated from the output? From
my perspective the programming IS the music, be it a PDF score or the MIDI
files I use to make my MP3 demos.

Certainly I see a differentiation license wise between taking the midi and
rendering the MP3. I don't have to take that step. But if I'm using LP to
make a final product, I certainly need to write the programming code.

Bar Lines and Compound Time Signature

2016-03-12 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I'm working on a piece that alternates between 9/8 and 4/4. The compound
time signature is great. Where in my original piece I had the time changes
in the fragmentary 2 bar music variables, with the compound time signature I
removed the time changes and forced a bar line after the 9/8 "measure".

This had the desired effect, but I noticed that the bar lines were absent
when my bar lines caused a new stave set in the middle of the compound TS
(that is, when the new line began with a 4/4 sub-measure).

Is there a way to get the bar line numbers to follow the subdivisions of the
compound time signature rather than the entire measure? Thanks...

Hiding one dynamic on a drum staff?

2016-01-31 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I usually write in a lazy way, omitting most dynamic marks, but a piece I'm
working on now I'm explicitly putting a crescendo for a few bars on the drum
part. For ease I just put it in the notes, rather than create a separate
variable for the drum staff dynamics and attach it in the score block.

Not that I care that much about my pdf output, but I'm getting duplicates of
the crescendo:

I'm having difficulty finding anything in the users guide about dynamics,
although I know it's there. Appreciate any help!

Re: Strange LilyPond crash

2015-11-24 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I don't know if I'm stumbling on something similar, but I can't believe that
it's a large file issue - the piece is about 50 bars of mostly slow 7 with a
repeat unfolded, two voices and a 2 part drum staff, no lyrics, and done
entirely with 2.18.2

I got to the final dozen bars, and was compiling a score block for the midi
with the drums, and a pdf score without. I added the final variable with
the coda, and got:

Starting lilypond-windows.exe 2.18.2 [Edski-2015-11-16 v4 test.ly]...
Processing
`c:/users/edward/appdata/local/temp/frescobaldi-cyoxhi/tmpcpyl1r/Edski-2015-11-16

Parsing...
Interpreting music...[8][16][24][32]
Exited with return code -1073741819.

Eventually I added the drums, the pdf works fine.

Thoughts on Frescobaldi...

2015-10-13 Thread Edward Ardzinski
WOW! This is what I was trying to do with the editor I wrote 10 years ago
(which kept me tied to v2.6.5), if I had the programming skill/patience.
There is so much available that I don't need to have the template file I
used to use anymore.

I'm still struggling a little bit with the output path, but it's not a big
deal since I was seriously contemplating using notepad. The editor is also
not finding available variables inside of my drum variables. Again not a
big deal since I'm pretty methodical about my variable names and have relied
on cut/paste for a long time (hence my initial idea to just use notepad).

As for snippets - so far I've added a generic variable, generic drum
high/low variable, the code to set a midi instrument, a drum staff, and a
comment break (just a percent sign followed by a bunch of asterisks). As I
have been working on an old tune of mine I also added a generic rhythmic
framework for chords which simplified getting the backbone of the tune
working. Since I use a lot of these same rhythms a lot, it'll probably stay
in the list - I'm likely to use that rhythm again.

There's still a lot for me to delve into with v2.18.2 and Frescobaldi...I'm
going to eventually get to working on adding lyrics, and have to re-learn
how to write alternative melodies and how to attach lyrics (seems there have
been some changes since 2.6.5), and deal with chord names and their
alternatives (I think chord name exceptions got better with v2.10?). There
some volume tweaks I've seen with midi (the main thrust of what I do) that
I've seen briefly - I'll have to go back and read those sections a little
closer. But nothing so far has been too difficult in 2.18. And I'll
recover the files on my old hard drive eventually, then I can play with
convert ly.

But all in all, I'm very pleased with both the new version of Lilypond and
Frescobaldi.

2.18.2 - Thoughts so far

2015-10-03 Thread Edward Ardzinski
1) I was apparently following some good practices in 2.6.5, since what I've
done in 2.18.2 has been essentially seamless. But...

a) I miss my old editor, as I had a lot of code shortcuts built in it.
Still, I had not updated it in many years, so there was an ancillary text
file of snippets. I think with Notepad, a template file, and a code
snippets file I will manage well.

b) There were some pieces that I tried to do some instrument specific
things (I recall tweaking a lot of code for a cross staff arpeggio's in a
few piano pieces) - these will need work. But for the most part, creating
midi files, well, game on!

2) The midi enhancements are great, I can put the dynamics in the music
score where they belong (I was cheating and doing that visually in another
program to manipulate the midi files), which can only make me a better
composer. I guess I could have/should have been doing this in 2.6.5, but
since I have to use something else to get good instruments sounds...so far
the Lilypond instrument sounds are great.

a) While this is all good things, there apparently is a constraint on
getting a long terminal note to decrescendo in midi? Anyone with a hack?

b) Articulations and dynamics are important. And hard work. Thanks...I
guess. ;-)

3) The current advancements have me able to get basically where I was with
LP 2.6.5 and AcidPRO 6, except for a for a few issues

a) the terminal fade out mentioned above

b) tempo changes in midi (have not yet tried that - any
advice/warnings?)

c) effects: I was evolving towards a very dry mix anyway, so the fact
that
the free-ware midi to mp3 converter has some digital artifacts (drums
especially - on an open high-hat I hear it a lot) is nto a fatal issue.
These are after all demos..

4) One final thought, as my snippets/code are in purgatory - what's the code
switch at the beginning of the input file to turn off the point-n-click in
the PDF output? Thx!!!

Notepad has it's limitations, but...it's predictable. At least to a boy

There used to be a way... dynamics in Midi

As I have evolved using LP I've become very modular. One of the last things
I was working on before my computer crash was a serial/tone row thing, so
that's where I picked up.

So I have my upper and lower parts, and a drum part...I remember that there
was a way to assign dynamics to each part, so the upper part would come in

become p, and the lower part is a mf

Does this make sense to anybody?

Upgrade to 2.18 from...a long time ago

2015-09-28 Thread Edward Ardzinski
My computer died, and while I should be able to salvage my old filed, but for
now I'm trying to deal with using note pad.

It seems my old template might work ok, I thought that I could not use \tempo
in the midi {} block, but it seems to work.

It's funny how much you forget relying on tools and other shortcuts.

Re: Fwd: Re: OT: Beauty of programming languages

2015-09-13 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I'm just about 6 weeks shy of 50, been programming computers for close to 20
years. I have been involved with deep database design, GUI design, and
reporting over the years, I'm primarily a SQL jock now.

I picked up Lilypond in early 2006, if the modified dates on my files are
any indication. I'm assiduous that way - It's helped narrow the genesis of
ideas.

Lilypond's set up immediately hooked me, I really have never used any other
manuscript programs, so my perspective is probably pretty limited. And
unique - as a programmer I created my own text editor...now that the source
code is on a very old computer, I'm kind of locked into the very old LP
version I run...I did some experimenting with v2.12, so I think I could
convert, but at this point I have not had any limitations in 2.6.5. (yes,
that old)...

I am primarily a rock bassist, but with some classical piano and trumpet
training, and I also can play guitar. I developed my own template and
methods of taking a simple musical theme and weaving it into a 2-4 minute
song. I'm trying to write out a cogent essay outlining the symbiotic
process between my music LP and the other software products I employ.
Mainly I create midi files for a 3 part "power trio" - a treble part, a bass
part, and a 2 stave drum kit. From there I use AcidPRO to create mp3's
files to hear, in a general way, the way the music sounds.

Re: Fwd: Re: OT: Beauty of programming languages

2015-09-13 Thread Edward Ardzinski
At this point I can't even locate the LP 2.6.5 install package - so I'll be
faced with a change when I need a new computer, and that is probably a
shockingly small number of days.

I figure I can figure something out for opening ly files - they are text
after all. The custom editor was fun and all that, but it's been 6 years
since I did an update to that even, and now have a "code fragments" text
file I keep open.

I think my structured work of the last few years will be easier to port - I
can't even get good work done on some of my oldest work since I was writing
things out in such a verbose way. I suspect I will need primarily to tweak
the template file for the little bits I've read on newer versions of LP.
The version of AP I'm using also also ages old, so I might be porting in a
lot of ways.

Regression Tests?

2006-03-27 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I'm confused, trying to read old posts...

What is the Regression Tests documents? Where do I locate them?

I'm using 2.6.5 on a Win XP/Home machine...right now I'm at a point where I
want to alter the way a couple of chords are printed, probably common tricks.
I want a 13th to just have 13 in the chord symbol rather than 9 add 13
(which I know is really the same thing), and want a half diminished chord to be
printed out as a m7b5...

I've seen some posts about these subjects, but always mentioning
the Regression Tests, and that detail stumps me!

Thanks!

chord_name_exceptions.ly question

2006-03-27 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I tried to post about this before...I don't knwo why my post never showed up.

I've looked at this file, and looked at a lot of posts about changing the way
chord names are displayed, and all I get is more confused. Can somebody give
me some guidance on how to create my own list of chord name exceptions, and how
to implement it?

I've read that the chord name exceptions file shows how to do this. I can't
make heads nor tails from it...sorry if I'm being stupid about it. I'm sure
once I understand it I'll truly feel stupid, but right now I just can't get a
clue.

Specifically, I'd rather a 13th chord be A13 instead of A9/add 13, and I'd
like to have the half diminished chord show as Am7/b5)...

Exercises

2006-03-18 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I want to put down some of my bass/fretless bass exercises. I would like to
have one file that has several short examples that might be a a couple of lines
long. I'm not having luck finding old posts, or the right spots in the
documentation.

What I'm trying to do (I think) is stop a staff, add some space (and text)
between it and the next staff (exercise 2)...

TIA

New to Lilypond...many questions! Simple chord placement ? to start

2006-03-14 Thread Edward Ardzinski
I am using 2.6.5 on a WIndows XP-home box. Pretty new computer, no issues in
the 6 months I've been beating it.

I tried to post some code I lifted the example below from one of the examples
in the documentation, but the submitter form kept saying I was top posting.
I'll describe the issue. If I uncomment either the bass clef of the key
signature, the chord symbols will print below the staff for me. Not critical,
but it looks better for doing a lead sheet (which is a large part of what I'm
seeing myself do with this program) having the chords on top, and the first
tune I am working on is in B major...

Is there a way for me to ensure the chord symbols print above the stave? Bug
on Windows eXpect Problems?? Especially this cheeze Home Edition?

I am just expecting a little too much of myself after playing in the pond for
a couple of days? :-)

I would be happy to send an e-mail with an attached .ly file to show what's
happening.

Thanks
