I worked this out. I reversed "evenHeaderMarkup" and "oddHeaderMarkup" in
the two lines below, and in David's suggested solution to my original
question, I commented out the two lines following "first page number=4"

Specifying a different number of systems on pg 1 ?
My apologies..I'm sure I've seen this in the documentation or on this list somewhere, but today when I actually need this, I can't find a way to do this. Thanks for the more complete picture. I don't know how you do this in Lilypond, but I think the proper notation is to write two eighth notes and use a dotted tie (indicating that for one verse it's tied (i.e. a quarter note) and for the other verse, it's two separate eighth notes. Just a guess, but it's probably the composer/editor's helpful instruction to sing an eighth note and breathe instead of singing a full quarter. But don't use it...the apostrophe/comma above the barline tells the singers all they need to know. The note in parentheses is an added distraction. The standard way of indicating special performance instructions that are difficult to notate in standard notation (which this is NOT) would be to use a footnote ( a small asterisk or a number like in a book ) and at the bottom of the page, write: Sing an 1/8th instead of a 1/4 note, then take a breath and proceed. But you do not need anything like this for this example. I agree completely with the sentiment. However, because LilyPond changes so frequently, it would have to be almost like a subscription with loose-leaf pages in a binder, so that when something changes, we could print out replacement pages. I haven't thought through this, but maybe something like: Say that Chapter 1 includes pages 1-1 through 1-40 and when an update occurred we could replace pages 1-3 through 1-8 with pages 1-3a through 1-8d (and then the next page would still be page 1-9 etc). Yes, there is a rule. All of the places where you have used underscore, like er__go should be hyphens: er-go and the last words in both lines (cernui and jubilatio) should both end with an underscore that goes through the last note. Mystery quirk in lyrics - only in the bass part
Interesting quirk that popped up this morning, and I wonder if anyone else has come across anything similar. I'm working on an a cappella choral score, and the lyrics are misbehaving - but only in the bass part. Here's what is happening: 1. Lyric extenders do not appear in the bass part, although they do show up as expected in every other part. Just to make sure I was not mis-typing or something, I copied and pasted the same text etc from the alto part, but no luck. 2. The second problem is not connected to extenders, but is also limited only to the bass part (same score as above). Throughout the score, in the bass part, the final syllable of a hyphenated word is left-aligned rather than centered, as it should be - and as it is in all of the other parts throughout. A couple of details that might help anyone who wants to offer theories or advice: 1. I'm not using any slurs, and not asking anything to happen automatically with the lyrics. 2. I'm running LilyPond 2.18 and 2.16 (with the same results), Windows 8.1 and I use Frescobaldi 2.0.16 to edit and compile the score. I also ran it directly in LilyPond 2.18, all with the same results. While trying to figure out how to create a tiny example that would
duplicate my problem, which I was sure had to be happening because of the
complicated layout, score block, incipit and choir staff markup etc etc, I
found the problem, and it was very simple.
When I was preparing this score with version 2.18 (from an original file
that was in version 1.4), I had left the bass lyrics block with
*textobassus=\lyrics{*
rather than *textobassus=\lyricmode{*
This was close enough that it compiled all right, and Frescobaldi did not
flag it as an error, but it was enough to create the two little problems I
mentioned originallyboth are fixed now.
And it took me less than 6 hrs.

Updating a score from version 1.4
This issue comes up from time to time for me, and I hope someone can help. Occasionally I need to make minor revisions to a score that was engraved with LilyPond version 1.4.12. That version was long before I started trying to use the program, so I don't have that version. Anyway, every time I try to revise the source so that it will compile in v. 2.16 or 2.18, I screw up something and it makes a mess and pretty soon I'm frustrated and move on to something more productive. So my question is: Is there any way I can get any of the very early versions so that I can make a couple of minor tweaks and compile these scores? Or is there some other solution that doesn't involve recodiing everything? Thanks in advance for any advice. Would it work if you were to install an intermediate version of LilyPond, perhaps 2.8.0 and use the convert-ly from that version to get you part way, then run convert-ly from your current version to finish the job? This is untested, but may be a more general solution than simply recoding from scratch. In principle, it's nearly always worth the effort to bring an old score up to current levels when you are revising it, although as you imply, it may not be useful for a minor revision or two. Header markup question
I'm editing a file that was created in 2.16. Within the *\paper* settings,
I have the following two lines that put headers on pages after the first,
and they print too close to the top edge of the paper. What markup should
be added to move the headers down a bit?

opening files with Notepad
Taking my first baby steps with Lily, so forgive the syntax/grammer of the question: Using NotePad, I've entered a few short samples from the user's manual, even edited in a few changes, etc., and all goes well, saved the files as something like Test.ly and run the compiler, the output comes out great in a .pdf file. The problem is that when I then reopen the source file in Notepad, everything looks different, all run together and basically un-readable. I've also gone to the Mutopia site and downloaded a couple of examples. They look fine, print fine, but again when I open the source code files in Notepad (I've also tried MSWord), the same thing happens. What am I missing here? BTW: I'm running Windows XP Pro.
