Dear All, Thank you so much for your input. In fact, I, a LilyPond user on Linux, was working on a project with a friend who was supplying text through her M$oft (love the shortcut!) tools. I am using 2.18.2, whose NR's language seems to indicate (but doesn't emphatically state) the use of New Century Schoolbook as the default font, but that font wasn't present on her system. Hi Folks, According to my lilypond system (2.19.19) it is plain Century Schoolbook (no New involved). This is a standard font supplied with Windows, at least up to Windows 7 which is a high as I go. If I were you, I would try to narrow down what the real problem is, step
by step.
I can verify that your second example below works just fine, when I try to
process it with lilypond-book in Linux. This is true also if I replace
the \"
commands in the LaTeX part of the document with the corresponding
unicode characters üäö.
I have never used TeXShop, but I guess you use the Lilypond-LaTeX engine
from
http://users.dimi.uniud.it/~nicola.vitacolonna/freesoftware.html. As far
as I can see,
it just runs lilypond-book and then latex, so nothing strange should
happen there.
However, I would recommend to use the pdflatex approach instead, i.e. to
edit
Lilypond-LaTeX.engine and replace the lines starting with "if ((
lilypond-book ..."
by (please note that I have not tested this, so it's likely to contain
some typo):
if ({ lilypond-book --output="$1:r"-out --pdf "$1" }) then
cd "$1:r"-out
if ({ pdflatex "$1" }) then
mv "$1:r".pdf ..
endif
endif
At least in some Windows versions, I seem to recall that the --psfonts
approach
didn't work so well, but --pdf + pdflatex didn't show the same problems.
Can you see any log printouts from the calls to lilypond-book? If so,
you could try
to add the flag --verbose to the call to lilypond-book above. Otherwise,
you could
try to manually run the commands in a command prompt, to be able to see
all the
log printouts.

When I use Lilypond+LaTeX, both my TeX and ly files are written in
UTF-8 encoding. Therefore you should add the line
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
into your LaTeX preamble. This works quite fine.

did you try to set the encoding in the TeX-file also to utf8?
You can do this by adding the following line to you LaTeX preamble.
\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}

Look on your hard drive for a recently generated .ly file with a strange name; that might contain the text that LaTeX sent to LilyPond to process. See if the characters are still there. Also--are you sure that the input file compiles properly in LilyPond anyhow? stupid font question
Well, I don't understand TEX fonts, so somehow I have managed to get my lilypond installation into a non-functional state (after it was initially working). I compiled version 1.4.13 from source on Red Hat 7.3 on an Intel PIII system. xdvi has some problems finding fonts, it seems. My experience with this is that you need to also comment out the "MFINPUTS" and "TFMFONTS" lines from /etc/profile.d/lilypond.sh (or whatever depending on which shell you use). Otherwise TeX will find the fonts there first before finding them via the symlink, and still dump the created font locally rather than in /var/tmp/. This is on RedHat 7.0, using the rpm install of lilypond though. It's probably different for every TeX installation in the world. Of course this is different form not being able to find the fonts. Perhaps this might be caused by not having the environment set up for you, and NOT having the symlink. The RPM's are probably built to work on rpm based systems in general. If you use a distribution that supports LilyPond (eg, Debian or SuSE?), these kludges are not necessary (and thus not used). I managed to find a backup of my old .bashrc, and sure enough there are lines there setting TEXFONTS and MFINPUTS etc. I just noticed that the installation web-page does mention that there are some sample shell setups created when you compile from source. I wonder if they also exist if you install from RPM? Is there a good reason why the fonts aren't on the standard TEX/MF paths? It seems odd that every user should need to edit their bashrc for a particular app (none of my other apps seem to require this - but then they probably don't install fonts either). Another silly font question
I've been using Lily for about two years now, always compiling from source, usually with no problems. Having not had time to do any typesetting for six months or so I thought it was time to get back to it, and set about installing the latest 'stable' rpm (Redhat7.1). This is on a completely vanilla installation of the OS. After sticking in the RPM, I tried to re-compile some of my old scores, only to find that it can't find most of the fonts. I then uninstalled the RPM and tried from the latest source tarball - again no fonts. I've scanned the FAQ and the last month or so of this list and can't find anything helpful, so the question is: does anyone know what step I'm missing? I used to have no problems with the 1.3.xxx series, but perhaps there is an extra config step that isn't in the install guide (a PATH setting perhaps?), and which I can't remember from my previous linux box?
