Oh showing 57Mbit for one network right now

Believe me I wish it were easy. It was a big accomplishment to get
the access point within 20 feet of where I am now. Getting a wire
here will be a long term project though, with a fair bit of effort.
My last house was pretty trivial to wire to the teeth but this one is
a lot more challenging.

VPN has been fine on the laptops I've been using. But finally wanted
my desktop from work so brought it home last weekend.

Oh I know - it is only a stop-gap measure to get me going until I get
a decent wifi card. I had one lying around already configured as a
bridge.

It is still faster than that TP-Link card though.

And this driver is terrible. I'm running a VPN on top of it to get

Wired is so much better especially for vpn.

I'm going to test connected to my Bell Wifi and compare. But right

If it does appear to be the Ubiquiti I'll open a ticket with them.
But I've driven that same VPN on multiple devices over the last couple

Definitely some issues with the card - I connect to the Bell wifi in

Connect to the Bell wifi with my phone and getting 55 down and 105 up

Dang. Can't wait til the ASUS card arrives from Staples so I can try it.

I have Bell Fibe 1G / 150Mbit

On my phone from the same location gettings 74 down and 131 up.

I guess I'm going to still try the ASUS wifi card I ordered from

[linux] Wifi issue with TP-Link TL-WN881ND

2020-04-02 Thread Alan McKay
Ubuntu 18.04 with latest updates
Linux HOSTNAME 5.3.0-45-generic #37~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 27
15:58:10 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Very strange issue here. Ubuntu recognised the card no issue and
everything appeared to be functioning but I just couldn't connect to
my wifi. After a fair bit of frustration I decided to try to connect
to the Bell WiFi directly on the Home Hub 3000 I have for Fibe - BAM
it works fine. Well, other than the fact that that thing is in the
basement and I'm on the 2nd floor so I only get about 5Mbit up and
down through it.

I have the HH3000 in bridge mode and I have an Ubiquiti USG and a
couple of Unifi-AC-PRO access points, along with the Unifi controller.
This setup has been working great for years now and I've connected a
wide range of clients to it without issues. rPis, various IoT devices
from multiple vendors like smart switches and so forth, Windows,
Linux. Mac you name it. Never a single issue. But dammit if I can
figure out why this card won't connect. I've tried various SSIDs that
I have enabled including both 2.4/5G mixed SSIDs, and 2.4 and 5G
segregated.

Here are the log entries from when it works against the HH3000 and
below that logs from when it doesn't work against my Ubiquiti setup

I've been doing a fair bit of googling and running some nmcli debug
commands and have not been able to find anything yet as to what is up
here

>From within my Ubiquiti GUI logs I cannot find an instance of the MAC
address of my TP-Link card. Which seems to indicate a pretty low
level issue.

Before you do, a few things:

1) Jitsi really, *really* wants its own server name. So you want to spin
up a server like "meet.tricolour.ca" and not try to do it in a subdirectory
like "www.tricolour.ca/jitsi"

2) Read this LWN article and follow the link where he talks about
misconfiguration in Debian's default setup: https://lwn.net/Articles/815751/

3) Keep yourself sane and install in Debian or Ubuntu. Installing on RPM-based
distros isn't really supported.

Dianne.

https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/1/21202945/zoom-alternative-conference-video-free-app-skype-slack-hangouts-jitsi

I'll have a look at these two links...

I've had exactly the same concerns. When trying to set up zoom a number
of days ago, I was pretty surprised when I first got redirected from
zoom.us to zoom.com.cn. Then it pushed me to install their app rather
than let me use my browser. The next day, even though I had managed to
connect the night before, it would not let me in until I fed it an SMS
account number, but I have no cell phone. Mike Gifford shared this link
with me that confirmed my concerns and also suggested viable
alternatives:

https://metaviews.substack.com/p/future-tools-jitsi?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjoyNDEwNDg0LCJwb3N0X2lkIjozNDU2NDIsIl8iOiJ4MmwyOCIsImlhdCI6MTU4NTc3NTI4NCwiZXhwIjoxNTg1Nzc4ODg0LCJpc3MiOiJwdWItMTY4ODIiLCJzdWIiOiJwb3N0LXJlYWN0aW9uIn0.g3Q-oeKzMoSOvJvMDQYMUkDPzDojEqLVKpDo5sKe6ac

just curious if anyone has personal experience with any of the
lesser-known alternatives?

Mike did set up a jit.si session for us, but the others in the call were
more enticed by the shinyness of zoom and all left the call. I would
have preferred to have stayed on the jit.si call.

Rob, thank you for starting this thread!

Mike did set up a jit.si session for us, but the others in the call were
more enticed by the shinyness of zoom and all left the call. I would
have preferred to have stayed on the jit.si call.

Rob, thank you for starting this thread!

Ok, excellent, there are locals who are standing up their own server.
This is exactly the sort of solution I was looking for. I'm not sure
how federation works, but this is the sort of unwalled garden I have
been wanting to use and actively promote.

I'm going to try setting up my own server.

I use Jitsi. Seems to work well enough.

You can use it for free at https://meet.jit.si/

However, for my friends and family, I installed my own self-hosted instance.
Download from https://jitsi.org

Dianne.

Also Mitel has allowed miteam meetings use for free during this crisis I
believe. I use the web version on Linux. Full disclosure. I work there.

I've used the "old" hangouts for meetings, but it is limited to 10 for
the free version, and in our Stittsville Creative Writers Group we've
found some people have difficulty connecting.

Linux-Ottawa AGM is possibly going ahead using Big Blue Button. I'll let
Scott announce that when he's ready.

Thanks to Robert for starting a thread that could be very helpful. And
I hope folk will share information e.g., about Jitsi trials.

Re: [linux] what are people using as opposed to zoom for videoconferencing?

2020-04-02 Thread Alan McKay
There isn't a whole lot out there for Linux that is Enterprise grade.
I've used both Skype and Webex and at both had relatively big issues
in Linux. Not sure if they are resolved now that was about 2 years
ago.

We use Zoom corporately and have been very happy with it - we've
raised bugs and they get fixed quickly. They seem serious about
keeping the Linux client current which is huge for us. We've asked
for a formal statement on these recent findings and unfortunately I
can't share anything that comes back but based on our history with
them I remain optimistic

I do like the looks of that Jitsi / Jitsu on-premise solution though.
When this pandemic started I raised this as a potential issue that
with everyone going to the Zooms and Skypes of the world en-masse,
that their infrastructure may collapse. So far that hasn't happened
but wait until all the schools in the world are doing virtual
classrooms - which may be starting in a couple of weeks. I'd like to
have our own in-house solution on the ready just in case. I may toss
that one at a coop student to play with ...
