Re: [linux] thoughts on linux on HP 14-fq1040ca?

2021-07-06 Thread Raj
I've never had good results with a realtek wifi card. You can generally
get them going with a compiled driver (dkms) but it always seems fussy and
prone to breakage, so I almost always swap them out for an intel. Usually
it's an easy swap, and not expensive, but do check for that. Other issue
that I have commonly faced with a newer laptop has been audio - I can't see
what's in this one for audio, so check that one too. But other than that,
it looks pretty standard and should work with linux.

the one i see at CC:

https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_1925_1912_1911_id=182958

differs from the one i was talking about in that the CC model is the
15.6" screen, rather than the smaller 14" one, and i would prefer the
slightly larger screen, so i'm going to take a closer look at the
model in stock at CC.

Re: [linux] thoughts on linux on HP 14-fq1040ca?

2021-07-06 Thread J C Nash
I looked at either this one or the Intel i7 version. There seems to be a family
of
machines using mostly same "bits" and changing processor and sizes of SSD.

FWIW Canada Computers Kanata has 1 and Merivale claims 3 in stock.

I liked speed, RAM and 1TB "disk".

When I went to look at the i5 level machines (about $300 less, and for
different user)
the CC guy pointed out that the components were slightly dated. I think he was
using
the USB version, which is not quite the latest. Conclusion was that these boxes
are a
good value, but are maybe like the last cars of the 2020 season vs 2021 version
of the
model.

Unfortunately, I've not got experience of how well they run Linux. Note that a
desktop
I had them build in February had a network card that Ubuntu/Mint LTS did NOT
yet have
support for. Worse, it "almost" worked. Discovered issue after lots of fooling
around
after network printer printed 1/2 a page each time. Needed kernel >= 5.8, which
is in
Ubuntu 20.10 or later. https://screenrant.com/best-linux-laptops/ shows an HP
laptop
as #5 in their Laptop ranking, but how similar that is I'm not sure.

[linux] thoughts on linux on HP 14-fq1040ca?

2021-07-06 Thread Robert P. J. Day

i'm in the market for upgrading my current linux laptop, and would
like to go with something with AMD ryzen core, i have the opportunity
to pick up one of these:

https://store.hp.com/CanadaStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=2L7Q8UA=ABL=NTB=en-CA

can anyone weigh in on HP's support for linux? i suspect it's pretty
good, just looking for any personal experiences.
