Unfortunately something has come up and I won't be able to make it
tonight.

When do you think the next time we'd be able to organize an in-person
pub meetup?

2022-11-03 Thread Katherine Mcmillan
I also expect it to be a small group, and I’m okay with that (I’ve written this
five different ways, and that’s the least euphemistic sounding, sorry, I tried).

Anyway, I plan on doing a rapid test beforehand. Richard, between your trip to
Ireland, and mine to Europe recently, I'm thinking our risk of recent exposure
- on the planes or one of the airports - is fairly high (the masking
requirement on planes was already dropped when I came back - I still chose to
wear a mask). But I think we're both also vaccinated.

So, yes, risk understood and acknowledged.

Sincerely,
Katie

Yup, and I'm not particularly concerned about what I expected to be a
small gathering in a pub given a strong penchant in this group to remain
online. Particularly after being in some very crowded pubs in Dublin a
month and a half ago.

Congregate living places have always been worse.

Hi Richard,

So for the record: some people will be meeting at the Royal Oak on Wellington
(1217 Wellington Street West) at 7pm tomorrow, and they will connect to the
Jitsi instance.

Thank you,
Katie

I will and I've had a private message from another who will meet me
there beforehand. I'm guessing they will also stay and certain they
have the tech to join the jitsi meeting.

So is there going to be a meeting at the wellington royal oak tomorrow?
If that's the case, who is going to be attending?

Richard - you don't even have a pager?

I've worked at a couple of hospitals, and whenever I still see those things,

I've been following the poop-meter regularly for more than two years:

Mine is a personal choice. I am comfortable with my informed risk
taking into account vaccine status and previous exposure and the risk to
other household members.

They certainly are when a meeting is held in a location like a bar where
concerned and vulnerable participants will be needlessly exposed to people
taking their masks off to drink and eat (if they even care about their
fellow participants and wear masks at all). In a bar participants will
unnecessarily surrounded by other unknown people unrelated to OCLUG who
may have been hostile to public health measures to prevent catching and
spreading COVID.

Is this a OCLUG meeting or a Beer SIG?

"In person" is not the same as maskless. People can have perfectly
valuable and enjoyable social interactions while still respectfully
wearing masks, as has been established the past two years.

But not in a bar this week. Such a choice, especially without
concern and action to involve virtual participants who may be the most
isolated, is exclusionary at the least, IMO.

*I* can't join any online meeting because I don't have a mobile device.

I am hoping others are also craving some in-person interaction and will
join me at this venue. I'll aim for 18:30. If they happen to have a
mobile device and can join the jitsi meeting, then we will join the rest
online.

> Bottom line, should our assumption be that we cannot rely on your

I will if someone else with a mobile device shows up and chooses to join
the jitsi discussion.

This follows the previous discussion ideas about alternating online and
in-person meetings. I can't imagine that I'm the only one in this
position. The dynamics are different in person, and I am seeking that
type of interaction because we haven't had that for 2.5 years.

Ok, I'll propose to meet at the Royal Oak. I'll suggest the
Wellington/Hinton location because there seem to be more people in the

2022-11-01 Thread Katherine Mcmillan
Hello all,

If anyone is interested in attending an in-person meeting - please consider
responding to the OCBUG poll for an in-person/hybrid get-together in November:
https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/aK18ELzd/vote

Personally, I think there is a lot of overlap in interest/topics between these
user groups - but I also understand that some would rather focus on Linux
distros or *BSD flavours.

Sincerely,
Katie
