Re: [OCLUG-Tech] Beware: Do not let the guys from "tech support" on your computer

2011-04-11 Thread Garth Boyd
When I received this call, call-display shows "123-456-7890". I also noticed
that when I answered I heard a ringing tone which means to me at least that
they had a dial out mechanism to further cover their tracks.

They seem to be going systematically through the 613 area at the moment, a
type of war dialling fishing attack trying to scam the unsuspecting. Yet
another reason to not answer your phone.

When I was making such calls for Nortel only 1 person questioned me, most just
gave me their IP address. And I was calling from an outside line.

The correct response to such a call is, thanks for the information, I'll
call back when I'm not so busy then call the number you have for the helpdesk
NOT the one the called might give you.

Eventually an email was send out to the people letting them know that they
would be getting a call. Given how easy it is now to copy company mail
templates it still could have been a well planned phishing attack, since most
people would not call the numbers provided to confirm.

Confusion is the first step of understanding.

Programming is as much about organization and communication
as it is about coding.

Eliminate software piracy: use only FLOSS.

[OCLUG-Tech] Beware: Do not let the guys from "tech support" on your computer

2011-04-11 Thread Shawn H Corey
I just got a call from someone from "tech support" that insisted my
computer had a virus that was flooding the net with messages. Which is
very strange since I do my own tech support. They also did not name the
company they were working for. When I told them I was running Linux,
they hung up.

This is an obvious scam, so if you get a call, don't let them on your
computer.
