[OCLUG-Tech] Remote desktop for Ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-04 Thread Jean-Francois Messier
For the last few versions of Ubuntu, I was having increasingly more
problems getting a remote desktop working properly from a Windows
client.

Here's my problem: I have serveral Ubuntu-based computers (Desktop
edition, not server), and those are virtual ones, running on a remote
box. Although I can do many things using the CLI, there are times where
I need the GUI, from a Windows-based client.

I tried the NX-based solution, with not much success (also the client
was flagged as infected by our andi-virus). I also tried the straight
RDP client, using the xrdp service installed under Ubuntu. In both
cases, I was ending up with a blank desktop, without even a button to
log out. I had to ssh to remotely kill the process.

What is recommended for such setup ?

Thanks :-)

How remote? Local lan, across town over a fast interconnect, or the
Internet?

Haven't used it recently, but while working with multiple offices in the UK
I was having pretty good success with VNC.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNC

There are clients (and servers) available for Windows machines. TightVNC
was the one I was using.

Good luck.
Marti.

We found VNC only usable on high bandwidth networks.

We use NX and find it about 100 kbps down and 20 up!

Several FOSS NX servers and clients at http://freeopensourcesoftware.org

I never liked VNC's performance, or lack thereof. Nor it's lack of screen
resolution matching...

Re: [OCLUG-Tech] Remote desktop for Ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-04 Thread Jean-Francois Messier
With the new environments under Ubuntu, as well as Gnome 3, it was
impossible to establish a graphic session using NX. The problem were in
the 3D thing of the new desktops. All I could get working was
TeamViewer, and it is not very good, considering the fast connection I
have with the server, and the fact that they nag you for money all the
time. Are there special configurations I should use under NX to get it
working ? On the No-Machine.com site, they are also talking about
problems on the later versions of Ubuntu, but they only talk about
versions 11 and up. A bit old, as far as I know. This parameter for the
classic desktop did not work for me.

I don't mind re-installing the server for this, in order to clean it up
of possible bad/demains of config files, but I am looking for something
that is working. I currently use Windows XP at work (yes, I'm at the
Government, so what else can I expect..).

That might be a subject for discussion at the next meeting, for those
interested...

Thanks again !!!

Re: [OCLUG-Tech] Remote desktop for Ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-04 Thread Stephen Gregory
I had the commercial NX working for a demo with Ubuntu 12.04. I had to do
something to force the 2d fall back mode. Unfortunately I deleted that VM
and can't remember what I did.

I would recommend VNC. It works well enough over a LAN. I have used the
vnc4server package in the past with good results.

It would seem that xrdp is only a proxy for VNC. I guess the advantage
there is that you don't need to install anything extra on the client end.
Seems to me that it is just adding extra bits that can break.
