Re: [linux-dvb] DVB scan fails with Nova-TD - please help?

2008-01-16 Thread Stephen G
Jose,

Thanks for the suggestion that the signal was too strong. I probably never
would have guessed that and would have tried amplifying instead.

Yesterday made some tests with my old MythTV box and Avermedia771 PCI card and
I managed to scan all the channels directly connected into the roof antenna
feed. This tells me that there is no problem with the connection.

Today in the mail arrived another passive splitter and some attenuators. After
connecting the passive splitter and a 12dB attenuator (the 6dB I also bought
wasn't enough), I pick up all 88 of the services.

It is really strange how the Avermedia771 can handle the signal strength as
well as the Nova-TD in Windows, but not in Linux?

What type of attenuation did the guy put on?

The guy put an splitter/attenuator very similar to the one
Nicolas has sent:

http://img466.imageshack.us/img466/8633/s1069zm.jpg

The main difference is that the one I have (the one that the
guy put) has a little screw that is used (turning it left or right) to
increase/decrease de attenuation level (we had to play twisting it a
lot, since the nova-t stick is very very very sensitive and, unless
you get the right signal strength and/or signal/noise ratio level, it
will fail miserabily on most channels depending on the frequency :-( )

I don't know if that sensitivy is specific to hauppauge or the
modules inside (tuner, demodulator, etc.), since a few weeks ago I did
a quick test with an Avermedia dual tuner (using only one tuner) and
it was able to find and tune ok all channels :-/

   Good luck!
   Jose

You're welcome. I was also following the same path (amplifiers
instead of attenuators), so I guess it is an obvious idea for
newbies (like I am) :)

Yes, very strange. I did a test with a dual-tuner Avermedia
(the one that is basically like the nova-td, I think), and it was also
able to manage the signal strength. As I also pointed, windows drivers
were also able to deal with high signal strength... I don't know if
this can bring some light to developers in order to make the nova-t
stick driver more... smart? Well, I don't know even if it is
possible (maybe it dependes on some hidden functionality? some
specific firmware version?) but, anyway, I hope these discoveries
about the signal strength and the sensitivity of the nova-t help
everybody. Anyway, just say thank you to all the developers for making
all their best without official support from nobody!! (just in case
some one got a wrong they do it wrong message!! :) )

I agree with this. It is great to have a small, USB dual DVB-T tuner working
with Linux which allows me to build a minimal mythTV backend. Thanks for all
the hard work with the drivers!

[linux-dvb] DVB scan fails with Nova-TD - please help?

2008-01-15 Thread Stephen G
Hi I have a Hauppage nova-td USB stick and I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy,
Kernel 2.6.22-14. I cannot seem to discover any channels when scanning.
When I use the nove-td USB stick on a Windows PC (same cable and
connection to roof antenna), I can pick up and watch about 65 channels!

I downloaded and compiled and installed the latest drivers as per the
instructions on the wiki. It seems as though the stick is detected ok:

Re: [linux-dvb] DVB scan fails with Nova-TD - please help?

2008-01-15 Thread José Oliver Segura
I don't know if my experience with a nova-t stick can help,
but... I found similar problems with that stick (as far as I know, the
nova-td is like two nova-t in the same stick), my problems where:

* With windows driver (hauppauge) able to scan, tune and watch around
40 channels (tv/radio) without any problem
* With linux drivers (linuxtv), able to scan only around 30 channels,
and some of them where not watchable (high unc values).

My signal strenght was something between 48-52% (depending on the
frequency), so I assumed it was a problem of signal strenght (I bas
obsessed with signal amplification options!). Last week, the guy from
the antennas store came to my house and he solved the problem...
installing an *attenuator**!! He told me that, despite software signal
strength reported was around 50%, his equipment was reporting
90dB-100dB of strength, very high. After installing the attenuator,
signal strength is around 15-21%, and I can tune and watch all
channels without problem. Seems that the windows drivers (or the
firwmware) are able to deal with high strength signal (I don't know
about quality) and that cannot be done under Linux?

Well, just my experience, to see if that may help you.

Best,
Jose

Jose,

Thanks for the quick response. Another reader Olivier suggested that I plug in
both antennas since the Windows drivers were probably using diversity or
something on the main receiver.

I attached one of the mini-antennas to the side connector and it seems
to have picked up a few channels. I have ordered a splitter/amplifier
so I will try it again in a couple of days with two full-sized coax
coming from my main antenna feed. I was able to capture TV, but it
came out a little broken due to the bad reception I think.

IIRC, on my TD stick the first tuner is the connector on the side of the
stick, the one thats need the tiny adaptor.

The TD doesn´t have an onboard amp so the LNA parameter does nothing.

Make sure you get a proper ugly tin can splitter if you do not want to
climb on your roof, it will give you a better results than a
splitter/amp combination from the supermarket.

Re: [linux-dvb] DVB scan fails with Nova-TD - please help?

2008-01-15 Thread Stephen G
Nicolas,

Thanks, it makes sense what you say that an amplifier is best closest to the
antenna otherwise it will amplify both the signal and noise.

My antenna is already split once with an F-type splitter
(http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/300/qq69.jpg) in the attic to give a connection
to my TV and also a second connection to the Nova-TD which is connected to what
will be my MythTV backend.

I'm starting to think that maybe the antenna signal strength is actually too
strong based on what Jose said. When I connect up the mini-antennas that comes
with the Nova-TD I can pick up some channels. When I switch my main rooftop
antenna feed into the side (mini) connection I don't get anything.

I ordered some attenuators as well as another splitter
(http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/300/jm13.jpg) to play around with. I should
also try my main antenna with my old MythTV box with a Avermedia771 PCI card to
see how it goes.
