Is it possible to get SNR info out of Nova-T or could it that bad ???

One other question (since I don't have total grip of this area).
I have also 2 Dreamboxes and those are showing:
 SNR: 99%
 AGC: 60%
 BER: 0

SNR, I understand quite well I think. Higher values means better quality and
less noise. I should not only focus on high values but also a stable value.

AGC, I don't understand. Can someone explain this??

BER, I think I understand this, Bit Error Rate means errors in the signal that
could not be interpreted by the receiver. Should be as low as possible.

Please correct me and/or fill in to increase my knowledge :)

 Regards
 Joacim

In a nutshell, AGC (Automatic Gain Control) attempts to present a
constant signal output, it's a compensation loop. If the received signal
rises beyond a certain level, AGC acts to attenuate it, if the signal
decreases, e.g due to fading AGC acts to amplify the signal. Constant
voice/video output for a large variation in received signals.

Sid.

Yep. Bit Error Rate is the uncorrectable error rate AFTER decoding the
incoming stream. In other words it's the error rate of the transport
stream itself.
Most errors can be corrected by codes in the stream so if you see the
BER averaging much more than 0 you can be assured that your signal will
not be reliable.

I think I have quite good equipment (please tell me if you don't agree). Then
it's always room for improvements such as high-end equipment all the way from
Monster Cables, etc.
Sorry for the referenced pages in Swedish
- The amplifier is Televés 5523,
http://www.kjell.com/?item=30294path=50,200,320
- F connectors where possible (everywhere but at the TV's and capture cards)
- Splitters used is of metallic type with F connectors such as
http://www.kjell.com/?item=30432path=50,200,550,560
- Most of the antenna cable is of KTV 1.0/4.8 but I have made one mistake...the
cable to the basement and where the server is have KTV 0.8/3.6...

Actions I have planned for:
- Test the direction of antenna if there are any improvements that can be done.
- Replace the antenna cable to KTV 1.0/4.8

Question:
- When testing the direction of antenna, is there any good tool I can use on the
Linux server with the TV-cards to find the best setting. My regular DVB-T boxes
have that good signal so it's hard to use them. (on my Dreambox SNR= 99%,
AGC=60%, BER=~0)
- What values should a aim for...
* Highest possible Signal Strength
* Highest possible SNR
* Lowest possible BER

I executed dvbsnoop (with -s singal) during a scan and when finding channels I
got:
Sig: ~46000
SNR: 0 (?)
BER: 0

Can I trust the values from dvbsnoop?? Any better tool??

There are usually two ways of amplifying a tv signal. Either you have a amp
close to the tv set. The best way though is to get a amp that has one part
down at the tv set and one up at the antenna. The tv-set part sends power
through the
cable up to the amp. This way it it a amplified signal that is transmitted
down to the tv-set. Because the signal is stronger it doesnt get corrupted
by other signals as easy.

Also, as I said on the mythlist, try Oliviers reception calibration patch.

 /Henrik

Yes, I will try that this tonight and will post the results of it.

I applied that patch and could see a slightly increased signal but didn't solve
my problem. Tested it by monitoring with dvbsnoop while running scan.

General thinking.

I have an amplifier installed close to antenna. The amplifier has 4 outputs and
one of them are connected to the server which are placed in the basement. The
cable is 25 meters long. At the server I have a 1-2 splitter since I have 2
TV-cards.

- Would is good to replace the 1-2 splitter at the server with an amplifier with
2 outputs??
- Should I maximize the output level on the top-level amplifier (I don't
remember what level it has right now)?
- Can electronic devices be damaged by too much amplified signal??

Nope, this is not the place it would amplify the signal as well as any
noise inserted by the cable, splitters, connectors, etc...

If you can, this is the best place to do it.

Check your cables, the connectors (switch to well mounted F everywhere),
check for the status (rust and all) on the connections outside...

Minimize anything that could deteriorate the signal on its way to your
tuners.

When I moved into my current house, I changed all connectors, got rid of
ugly splitters, trashed a supermarket amp+splitter close to the TV and
replaced a few cables. I have gained 15% signal :o)

Next, I will replace the main antenna cable, change the antenna with one
with more elements and an amp at the mast, and make sure all
connectivity is protected from the beautiful scottish weather.

I should easily get a jump of 20% more signal, mostly by cleaning the
path.

 - Can electronic devices be damaged by too much amplified signal??

If you stick to your antenna-mounted amp, you should be OK.

You cannot use the previous firmware with this code.

In order to downgrade, you would need an old revision of the code, which

[linux-dvb] Hauppauge WINTV Nova-T 500 PCI

2007-08-28 Thread Maillist
I am trying to setup a MythTV backend with two Hauppauge WINTV Nova-T 500 PCI,
which means in total 4 adapters (2 per card). The system are running Kubuntu
7.04 (64 bit) with kernel 2.6.20-16.

The cards are installed and dmesg shows that the cards are found correctly. When
scanning for channels, I can not receive all channels on all adapters and the
signal strength is about 50-65%. When testing the antenna cables connected to a
regular DVB-T box I get signal strength about 91%. On 2 and sometimes 3 adapters
I can get all channels but have not succeeded on all adapters.

I have set
options dvb-usb-dib0700 force_lna_activation=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/options

The firmware I am using is dvb-usb-dib0700-03-pre1.fw and yesterday I tried to
downgrade to dvb-usb-dib0700-01.fw but I was not able to load that, always tried
to load the previous one (which I deleted to avoid conflicts).

- What should I investigate to get this working?
- What firmware should I use?
- How can I do a firmware upgrade/downgrade?

The cards is installed according to this guide:
