Subject: Sound Card Problem
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 20:40:25 -0700

KERNEL 2.2.10 ON REDHAT 6.0.

Today I picked up a Creative ENSONIQ AudioPCI sound card and installed
it in my Linux box. I thoroughly folowed the sound-HOWTO three times,
but I cannot get a peep out of the sound card/speaker.

Does anyone out there have any experience with this card and how to get
it working. I don't mind the $35 dollars for the cards, but the speakers
were pretty expensive. The speakers work, but the card is not sending
any info to them. Checking /proc/audio shows that nothin is configured.
Am I missing something?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If I need to RTFM, please direct
me to the TFM I need to R.

Thanx in advance,

Denning

Maintasks: large databases and spreadsheets, internet, no games

Generally speaking, the strong suit of the AMD K series is integer
performance, and the strong suit of the Pentium / Celerons are floating
point. Given the same clock rate, the AMD will run a database or web
server about 15-20% faster than the Celeron. The Celeron will likely
run the spreadsheet and any graphics editor 20-50% faster. At work,
I build web pages on my PII 300 with a GUI and things like GIMP and the
PII feels like a good choice there, but the web server is an
AMD K6-2-300 and it is more responsive than the similar PII-300 Linux
servers other folks have.

For a large database, L2 cache is nice, and the K6-2 will have way more
than a Celeron, depending on the motherboard. I've build 5 or so
servers on K6-2s with the FIC VIA-MP3+ based motherboards and been very
happy. Most of the FICA VIA based boards come with 1Meg L2 cache, and
are PCI 2.1 compliant and can handle and cache 512Megs of ram.

For Pentiums, we use Intel Mobos and cases. Expensive, but reliable.
I don't have much experience with any other mobos for pentium / celeron
use.

Once in a while I get the same message.
I usually type "ps" to look at what is busy at.
Then I kill the process (usually if-up-something) by typing "kill" with
the number of the process after kill.
That will regain control of the modem for me :-)

I am trying to use the card for a Jaz drive also. Works fine in MS Windows and
worked in Mandrake 5.3 but refuses to cooperated in Mandrake 6.

If believe that it is a 53C4xx clone chip. Look on the top of the biggest chip
and it should have a number like 53C430 on it. I think there are drivers for it.
Haven't played with it, but I have one at work in a Windows box I could

Maybe someday some motivated hacker will take it as a personal
challenge to reverse-engineer the windows drivers
and write a Linux driver, but it would likely work
with only that specific brand/model of winmodem.

And then again perhaps some winmodem and/or winmodem chip
manufacturer will defy Billy G and release his interface specs.

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Yes, that is correct. There is no way to make it work. If you can,
return the Winmodem and buy a real modem.

I know it is not supported direct but maybe there is an add-on package or
driver which can make them work?

The manufacturers will not release specifications for drivers to be

I think it speaks PCL. That gives me some hope -- I'll start diving into
/doc again!

Looks like there may be some chance (at least in the future) for the Lexmark
too -- see Edward's post below.

Any hints on how to get at least one of these working?
 I suspect that the Lexmark 1100 is a windows-only GDI printer. I don't
think you will beable to use it under Linux. I know nothing about the
Minolta printer -- if it speaks PCL or PostScript you will beable to use
it. But I have no idea whether or not it does.

Also, I have a cheapo SB-compatible (it says here, although it uses its
own
drivers under Win98) sound card. I can find very little in the SuSE
manual
about getting a sound card set up (other than "it's not
straightforward").
  Any pointers?
Since you are using SuSE, the easiest way is to use OSS (assuming that
you have an ISA sound card). I think OSS is listed somewhere under the
commercial application packages (in YaST) or something. Once it is
installed, it is extremely easy to set up a card; just run the
soundconf program and it *should* auto-detect your card and things will
 work.

Can you help me,please?

I used sndconfig ,a RedHat and Mandrake exclusive tool that should (I say
SHOULD) automatically detect sound cards.
It detects the cart correctly but there's a big conflict in assigning
DMA,IRQ and IO adresses.

I admit I have Win98 installed and ,I know, that is not good for linux
experts, but i'm a beginner so forgive me!
I used the same adresses that correctly work in Windows, but they don't work
at all in Linux.
I tried every possible scramble between every possible adress but it was all
useless.
The error message tells of a resource conflict assigning bit to a certain
adress.
Have you an idea?

LhD: Linux Hardware Database and CompHardware.com partner on the Linux
Hardware Database

July 14, 1999

LhD (lhd.datapower.com) has announced a partnership with
CompHardware.com aimed at unifying the Linux hardware databases at the
two sites.

As part of the agreement, the contents of the hardware database at
CompHardware.com will be merged with LhD: Linux Hardware Database.
Linux hardware information will continue to be available on the
CompHardware.com site through LhD, and current registered CompHardware.com
users will be able to continue to use the same usernames and passwords.

The consolidation of the two databases brings ratings, product specific
reports, Linux driver information and other LhD features to
CompHardware.com users. LhD users will be able to conveniently access
CompHardware.com product reviews, optimization information and other
hardware related editorial content on a product basis. Kristopher
Kersey, the editor of CompHardware.com, commented: "We [CompHardware.com
and LhD] felt that having two separate databases was counterproductive.
Having a one-stop source for the database and then a seperate link to an
all out review should provide easier access to what Linux users need to
know."

The new agreement allows LhD to focus on the component database, user
reports and driver information and allows CompHardware.com to focus on
its core reviews, editorials and other hardware related content. It
also greatly benefits the Linux community by unifying two valuable
resources under one roof and coming closer to providing a single-stop
resource for Linux computer component information.

About Computer Hardware Information
CompHardware.com is the the first and only hardware web site to do Linux
reviews along side the standard Windows reviews on computer hardware.
The site has had a slow start but now with the partnership to DataPower's
database it will grow much faster with an even greater focus on quality
reviews.

About DataPower Technology
DataPower Technology, Inc. is a startup company in Cambridge,
Massachusetts which launched LhD: Linux Hardware Database
at http://lhd.datapower.com several months ago. The site is devoted to
product-based reports, ratings and workarounds for using hardware under
the Linux operating system. Because the database ties user commments,
ratings and driver information with a specific

fdformat is no longer used in debian installations. Use 'superformat
/dev/foo' instead.

I'm running redhat 5.2 and have a parallel port zip 100 drive that I
can't quite get to work...

When installing redhat, there is an option in the scsi adaptors setup
section to install the ppa driver, so I tried that, and by probing, it
failed to find the device. I tried specifying parameters, like the
address and whatnot, and it still did not work, it hangs the computer
looking for the drive (I entered the resources for my parallel port as
they are shown in Windows, the parameters I added were "ppa=0x378,7" I'm
not sure if that is correct, but I had to do the same for my scsi
adaptor, and that worked ok.)

I installed redhat without the ppa module, and tried installing one of
the newer kernels (2.2.9), and I noticed that there are two zip modules
now, ppa and imm for newer drives. I have fairly new zip drive, but the
cable does not say 'autodetect' like the information in the kernel setup
says. I tried compiling the kernel with ppa, when that didnt work, with
imm. Neither worked, and anytime I type "insmod ppa" (after first
installing redhat and also after upgrading the kernel) it says that the
ppa.o device is busy.

I'm not sure what else to try, any help would be appreciated...

Try mounting it as partition 4:

btw you can also make ext2 filesystems on zipdisks... very cool...

If you are not planning to run a monitor on it most of the time don't
waste money on one. Just use the serial console to do an install. Set
up another system with minicom or a similar serial console program at
9600 bps, 8-n-1 and hardware flow control and connect a null modem to
port "A" on the SPARC. As long as the SPARC does not have a keyboard
attached to it it'll immediatly switch control to the serial port upon
boot and give you a console there. Depending on the distro you may have
to issue a special command to get the install proggy to work correctly
with a serial console. I know RedHat and Debian do it without a hitch.
You can still install any portions of X you want to do remote X with.
One of the wonders of a properly designed BIOS/PROM.

I'm going to be picking up an old Sun Sparc 10 workstation tomorrow and
try my hand at Linux with it. One minor problem I have is that the
workstation does not have a monitor. In the short term, I can borrow
one from a friend but I really do need my own. I looked up the stats on
the video adapter and found that it runs at a resolution of 1152x900 @
66Hz or 76Hz. On the monitors I have for my Pentiums, I don't see that
resolution listed, so I'm hesitant to try them out with the Sun. (it's
coming with the 13w3 to VGA 15 pin adapter so I can plug a VGA monitor
 into it.)

I looked up monitors on Sun's web page and their compatible 17" monitor
is running $480. Are there alternative sources for Sun monitors out
there that would offer me substantial savings over that price? My
searches don't come up with much. I would consider refurbished monitors
since I will be running the station "remotely" through X-Windows most of
the time. I am also open to the idea of using a compatible monitor,
provided I can get a decent one for less than a Sun branded model
(probably not too hard to do). Does anyone out there have experience
using non-Sun monitors with Sun workstations and could you share that
 experience?

I'm also looking to upgrade the system if at all possible. The system
is a Sparc 10 with room for up to 4 processors. Currently it only has
one 50MHz SuperSparc, which will be fine for now. However, I would
eventually like to have 4 processors for the system. However, I didn't
see any SuperSparc processor modules for sale at Sun's website. Are
there any dealers which specialize in selling new (or refurbished)
processor modules? If so, can you direct me to their website(s)? I
also remembering reading somewhere that aftermarket processor upgrades
are available, giving more power to the Sparc architecture after Sun
moved to UltraSparc. Is that true and if so, where would I find those
 processor modules?

 Thanks for your time,
 Roy Grimm

I'm building a new Linux/Oracle box. We will use it to host a few thousand
GoldMine Contact records to and for learning.

I have a bunch of spare parts to work with. I have:

1 - Pentium II 266mhz processor
1 - 8 gig EIDE hard drive
2 - 32 meg SDRAM DIMMS
1 - 2 meg Matrox video card
1 - 3com network card

Does anyone have any opinion/advice as far as what kind of motherboard to
buy? Case? Other hardware? Does ths stuff lok like it'll all work out
o.k.?

I have never built a PC from the ground up, but have many years of exp.
replacing parts and upgrading.

Thanks!
