should take the abit. it rocks !

now for the Athlon compatibility, forget that. you'll never have the
 good chipset
to manage it. and an adaptator would be so slow you'd lose the Athlon
 advantages...

At 600 It runs at 3*200Mhz Fsb and outperforms a dual P3 500 in Q3aTest
 (v1.06.)
This thingie is gonna rock HARD !

yes, but on its OWN motherboard, it's to say an AMD proprietary chipset.
NOT a single i440BX !!!

and you should note that the tests were run under 98' for the Athlon and
under
NT 4.0 for the dual P3 500... and Q3A under NT is sooo fucking slow
!...

really, I think this Abit with a dual Celeron is the good choice. now
it's up to you..

Simply can be found at www.simply.co.uk. Dan at www.dan.co.uk

I think I have a good handle on what I need to get, but I have no clue
where to buy. I've checked shopper.com and pricewatch for the lowest
priced places, but I'd prefer to buy everything (mobo, cpu, memory, HD,
case, etc.) from one place at a reasonable price.

Any recommendations of online places for PARTS? I especially would like
some good names of places for ECC memory that also sell other computer
 parts like mobo's and cpu's.

 Thanks,

Apparently, Phoenix and Award do BIOSes with support for a serial-line
console instead of a VGA framebuffer. Does anybody know which, if any,
currently-shipping 440BX motherboards (preferably single-processor)
come with one of these BIOSes?

Thanks in advance...

Everything works now, so I'm not sure if it was a combination of the
kernel and oss I was using, or because my card just decided to work again!
I didn't change anything else, so check your kernel and oss versions, that
 might make some difference...

I don't know what the Vibra 16 C is like, but the Vibra 16 X (Waveffects)
card has two 8-bit DMA channels instead of one 8-bit and one 16-bit channels.
In Windoze, 16-bit sound is produced by two cycles through the 8-bit DMA
channel. This presents a problem in Linux since there's no native driver
to do this that I know of. However, I have gotten the card to work with
the latest versions of isapnptools and sndconfig in Red Hat 6.0. Go figure.
I at least feel a little better that I didn't thrown my money down the drain
when I mistakingly bought this card :-)

Subject: SCSI ZIP 100 Mount/Unmount Problems?
Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 04:18:26 GMT

Hi,

I have managed to edit my /etc/fstab file to mount my ZIP 100
(external SCSI) ... which it does quite nicely on startup.

However, when I try to unmount it as user I get the message ...

umount: only root can unmount /dev/sda4 from mnt/zip

I can go into root and unmount it, but if I want to then mount it
again, I get ...

umount: only root can unmount /dev/sda4 from mnt/zip

once I go back to user.

I've tried everything I can think of in the way of settings that can
be changed, but I cannot figure exactly what I need to do to
mount/unmount from user.

Any suggestions? I'm sure its something blindingly obvious, but I've
only had Linux (Mandrake 6.0 Venus distribution) up and running for a
week, and I have no previous Linux or Unix experience (Apple II, Mac,
Amiga, Windows experience, yep ... Unix/Linux, no sigh)

Any help gratefully accepted!

Hi everyone!

I am looking to buy a postscript laser printer and found a printer with
very nice specifications for a nice price:

NEC SuperScript 1800 (about $770 at PCConnection)

1200dpi (not that I can see the difference w/r/t 600...)
17 ppm (manufacturer's claims...)
PCL5/6 and PostScript Level 2 (additional ~$110)
Duplex (nice feature! lets save some trees...)

Claims to be compatible with Windoze/DOS and Mac (with the PS kit and an
optional mac interface)

Will it work with Linux? It should, right? After all it is PostScript...

But will I know the escape sequences to make it print either in duplex or
simplex mode?

How reliable are NEC printers? (I was going to get an HP 2100 w/PS for
about the same price, but no duplexing)

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Carlos
