daemon is users/groups for background processes (no password).
admin is user/group/processes that have administrative priveledges (no
password).

NOBODY (I repeat, NOBODY) should be logging into the daemon or admin
users/groups. They are ONLY for background processes that the OS uses.

If you want to add a user that has administrative priveledges, you can add
'admin' to their group as well as other groups.

Again, NOBODY should be part of daemon user/group. Period.

For a better description, read the "Linux System Administration" (try
http://www.linuxdoc.org). Another book would be "Unix System
Administration" for a description of users/groups and background processes
in unix/Linux.

I got the Compaq Presario 1247 to work using TurboLinux but I
had an equally hard time setting up the X Server. However, I
finally got it going. For the monitor I simply used the default
monitor setting with the modes 800x600 and 640x480 set up.

The setting I used for the graphics card was tgui9420dgi. The
way I found this out was by trying to install with a combination
of XF setup programs. They each detect things differently and
I eventually came across the correct setting. The utilities
I used were:

XF86Setup (runs with the VGA16 server)
xf86config
turboxcfg (comes with the distro)

The next problem is getting sound and I haven't got that going
yet! Let me know how you get on.

Regards,
Michael.

This was posted to an HP News group. But why not look at a lower end
HP, like the A or D. Do you really need that much hardware. I will be
glad to quote you an A if you send me the specs.

which will cost $50,000 for each, and it is beyond my budget.

 Here is my question?

 1. How is Solaris8 stable on Compaq servers? My candidate for the server
is Compaq ProLiant 8500, and I am not sure how Solaris 8 handles 8 Xeons.

 2. What will be the other best OS for ClearCase other than Solaris?

 3. If Solaris 8 is not enough stable, my back door will be installing
RedHat 6.2 on the servers and running ClearCase. Has anyone run ClearCase
 on Linux?

 Can someone please help?
First you have to provide your kernel with :
scsi-emulation
generic-scsi
with scsi-cd
with/without disabling cd-ide.
Some guys claim that you don't need to
disable ide-cdrom but I remove it from kernel.

Thanks for the informative replies, everybody! It was hard to choose
between Epson and Lexmark; Lexmark was somewhat more highly recommended,
but the printers seem nearly interchangeable if you 1) trust
ghostscript, and 2) trust Epson.

In the end I bought the Epson Color Stylus, and it's working pretty
well for me. The original problem, a jamming sheet feeder, appears to
be solved. Also the printer was cheap: $70 after rebate for a factory
refurbished printer (incl. all shipping, handling and taxes).

The only problem remaining is: has anybody gotten their CS 440 to
print at 720x720 resolution? Everything's fine at 360x360, but at
the highest resolution the printer just starts spitting out blank
sheets. Ghostscript problem? Printer problem?

Interesting problem! A few days ago I found an old SoundBlaster 16 (the
original ISA one) unused and tried in my PC in place of a Jazz16.

I had a similar experience in that sounds from an MP3 player were badly
distorted though I didn't try sending any raw samples direct to the
device as you did.

I had the line out jack connected to my HiFi and I was able to reduce
the amount of distortion by turning down the volume control with the
mixer and then turning up the volume on the HiFi. This was not a good
solution though because the S/N noise ratio was then rather poor. In
the end I went back to using the Jazz16 (which uses the same 'sb' linux
driver) and which doesn't have the distortion problem.

With both of these cards these is background noise on top of the normal
hiss that goes away when the CPU is kept busy. My guess is that when
the CPU wakes up only on the timer interrupt and halts shortly
afterwards having found nothing ready to run that differences in its
power consumption are putting noise on one of the power rails that the
soundcard uses.

I just bought an Epson Color Stylus 440. It works pretty well, but
I'm having trouble getting it to print at the highest resolution
(720x720). At 360x360, everything is fine. When I change the resolution
(and leave all other settings alone), the printer starts fiddling with
the paper but spitting it out blank.

Has anyone gotten the CS 440 to work at 720x720 under Linux? Any help
would be much appreciated.

Also, does anybody have a suggested gamma correction for color accuracy,
and suggested margin settings?

Thanks,
