I'm curious about the statement about overclocking. I bought a dual P-III 450
system from a Web merchant. It works wonderfully. It has CPU fans on both of
the CPUs. Most of the time, this system runs around 46 Celsus. However, when
I start up the Distributed Net Client (dnetc), within about 3 minutes, the
temperature (according to LMSensors) has climbed to 55 Celsus. At this point,
I get a CPU overheat alarm. Does this mean that the seller has overclocked my
machine to get the 450 Mhz? Or can other things cause this? BTW - the same
thing happens on a NexStar AMD K6-2 400Mhz system that I bought at Fry's.
I've been trying to figure out how to keep these systems cooler. I did
buy a dual fan that takes up a PCI slot, but it appears that this is not
really helping. This is probably due to the way that the motherboard is
laid out (SuperMicro P6DGE or DBE - I forget which). The 3.5 inch drive bays
make one wall and the AGP video card separates the CPU area from the PCI
slot area. Any suggestions on how to make this thing run cooler? I'm fairly
good with putting in drives & boards, but I would be scared to try to mess
with the actual CPUs (I.e. put on a new heatsink or some such).

Thanks to all for any thoughts,
John

Actually, I spent about an hour this morning perusing both the HP site
and
the Philips site (this drive was reportedly OEM'd by Philips) with no
luck.
HP doesn't seem to list any firmware upgrades for this drive. As for the
Philips Web site, let's say that I have not been so frustrated in a long
time.

I just installed RH6.2 this weekend on another HD and it
got fairly stressful because I wanted a clean line between
the two. I set up the Linux HD as the secondary master and
literally disconnected my c/windows hd because I have heard
about horrific slip ups that can happen while manually
partitioning.

Anyway, I boot either HD directly from the BIOS. I don't
know if this is a good idea as far as burning out any ROM
but oh well...motherboards are relatively cheap.

Good Luck

Well, I run Red Hat Linux 6.1. I can properly watch TV using modules bttv and
videodev, with program
"xawtv", but now I'd like to use the remote via serial port. My kernel is 2.2.12. I
think the chipset

I am somewhat unimpressed with the current crop of LCD flatpanels, due
almost entirely by the way they are driven from a standard analog
video card. Picture quality is not nearly as good as what you will
get from a laptop which has a direct digital connection.

The one exception is the SGI flatpanel display which *does* have a
digital connection between the PC and panel. The downside is that you
are limited to the Number 9 video card which is a bit dated compared
to the current crop of video cards. *However*, SGI is selling
re-furbed flat panel displays with the Number 9 video card for about
$1100, which really is a pre

Hi

Does anyone know if the above X-Terminal can be logged onto a Linux box? It
requires HP ENWARE to boot from a server but there are reports (unconfirmed)
that ENWARE binaries can be loaded into Linux for booting. Does anyone know
more details?

Many thanks.

Look again at your predecessor's post.

I'm typing this on a K6-2 system with an Epox motherboard capable of
caching 256M. There's only 96M worth of RAM in the DIMM slots, because
RAM is expensive these days. The 256M limit on caching here is because
there's a limited amount of what they call "cache tag RAM" soldered on to
the motherboard. The tag RAM tells the memory management hardware which
pieces of main RAM are stored in the L2 cache. Tag RAM has to be fast, so
it's expensive, and the hardware to make it do the right thing is a bit
complex, so it's also expensive. Hence motherboards having a limit of
128/256/512M limit on the amount they can cache.

There was a time when Pentium-class boards could only cache 32 or 64M.
Adding more than to the board would make the machine run extremely slowly,
since any info not stored in the 64M cachable area would have to be
retrieved through the ultra-slow FSB rather than the mostly-fast L2
cache. More info on this can be found somewhere on http://arstechnica.com

Look at your modems manual. It's usually the hayes command X3
(or X1 or X2 or X4; it depends). Try various numbers.

Where's your hard drive attached? If you're booting an IDE hard drive,
then the Adaptec BIOS is not needed. The BIOS detects this and disables
itself. The message is simply for you to realize what's going on.

The Adaptec BIOS is only used during the boot sequence and for those
operating systems (meaning DOS) which use the BIOS for disk access
instead of device drivers.

Once your operating system is loaded, the BIOS is not required for
anything, which is why you can use a non-bootable hard drive, tape
drive, CD-ROM, whatever, on the card even when the BIOS disables
itself.

If the message really bothers you, go disable the Adaptec BIOS. You
don't need it unless you need to boot something (a HD or CD) o

Yep. IIRC 2.2.14 had the fix available, so try that if you're not ready
to make the jump to 2.3.99-pre6. FWIW, 2.3.99-pre3 has been rock solid

Wild shot in the dark: Have you put the following line into /etc/fstab ?

none/var/shm shm exec,dev,suid,rw 0 0

ALso make sure to "mkdir /var/shm" if it doesn't exist already. Shared
memory as used by some programs is now a filesystem. ("EVERYthing in Unix
is a file.") Just "mount -a" after doing these things and things should
work better wrt X and MIT-SHM. I think.

With my motherboard this _is_ a BIOS option - in the BIOS setup you can
can choose what happens when the AC power is restored after it had been
removed. The choices are:

1. Remain off.
2. Come on.
3. Go into the same state as when the power was removed.

I can understand what you say about the BIOS not executing until the
processor is powered up but things are a little more complicated than
that.

When the system has been turned off from the front panel switch it
isn't completely dead - some of the power supply and some of the
motherboard are still powered up.

This enables the motherboard to monitor:

1. The state of the front panel power button.
2. The state of the "power on from network" port.
3. The state of the "power on at modem ring" port.
4. The real time clock.

and based on what it finds it can bring the system back to
full-power-on mode, presumably by raising a signal line to
the power supply.

In order for whichever chip on the motherboard is r

Of course. It is possible. I used this possibility to watch video w/o any
problem.

Subject: V3, Kernel 2.3.99-pre6 & XFree86 v4.0 - HELP !

Since upgrading to the latest development kernel I have come across a
problem with my X setup.

I have compiled the tdfx module through the kernel configuration, and
have rebuilt the Glide_V3 source rpms, and the tdfx_dri-3.9.18.src.rpm.
The tdfx_drm-0.8.5.src.rpm won't compile under this new kernel, but I
don't think I would need it because the tdfx module is now included in
the kernel.

Basically the problem is thiswhen I try and run certain programs
they seem unable to create their own windows.
If I try and run XMame I get the error :

"failed to create MITSHM block"

If and try and run a Mesa test program like Gears the command just sits
there trying to do something, but the window is never created and I have
to ALT-C to stop the process.

I'm not sure whether this is because I haven't compiled something
correctly into the kernel (there is a lot of new stuff in there).

Anyone else seen this ?

Many thanks

Andrew

You have what is known as a winmodem, which means that instead of
having a controller on the modem, a few dollars are saved by using
the main CPU for the work instead. Unfortunately the manufacturers of
these modems haven't published the interface, so noone has been able
to write the necessary drivers for OSes other than windows.

Buy a new modem and save yourself a lot of headaches, the HCF modems
has quite a reputation for being unreliable and having poor throughput.

I really don't think it's intentional, it may just be a technical problem.

I've recently run into the same phenomenon in a Toshiba notebook.
Linux installation bootdisks tend to use Syslinux as a bootloader, and
the Toshiba couldn't boot it, despite having no problems with LILO
or a Kernel written raw to floppy.

Thank you for the nice discussion.

I actually got them to take it back tomorrow. Therefore it would be the end of story. I
am actually willing to find out what was going on with this particular computer. But at
any rate it is a really strange behavior. I called 5 or 6 support reps. They could
figure out what problem that is. A jumper problem? I do think that is possible. But
that
is the only hard disk. If it is not set as the master drive do you really think the
machine can still boot normally from hard disk? Hey, I know the BIOS setting crap.
