Re: IDE for Java?
It's now been announced on Sun and Slashdot -- check it out. Basically, they'll release it under the MPL, without the browser and the compiler. Release expected in two months. What I find most interesting about Sun's Open Source flirt is their Industry Standard Source License http://soldc.sun.com/tools/licensefaq2.html, which looks like a non-copylefted Open Source license except that it appears to attempt to make sure that anyone who changes the actual API or protocols has to publish the new API or protocol. Right now something called TI-RPC is licensed with it. This smells of a possible future Java license to me. repartition disk
Hi list. I partitioned my disk to have 2.5 GB on /home and only 600+ on /usr /home and /usr are NOT close to each other (sda2,sda3). Is there any way to enlarge the /usr partition (using the /home partition) without damaging the partitions ? In the worst case i can delete the /home partitionpainful but can live with that. Other way is to backup all the partitions to a backup tape and to restore it later. did any one done it ? What do i have to do ? Re: What is the 8 in 10.0.0.0/8 and how can I compute it for my network?

I guess that it has much to do with the subnet mask but isn't subnet masks of the form 255.255.0.0? 10.0.0.0 consists of 32 bits (8 bits for each number). /8 means 8 significant bits - thus, when an IP is compared to 10.0.0.0, it's enough for it to match the first 8 bits (= 1st IP number part, one byte). This is equivalent to: 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 /255.0.0.0 is a logical-AND mask. It will be logical-ANDed to 10.0.0.0 (or whatever subnet IP you specify) and to each and every IP which should be checked whether it is in your network (like 10.0.0.5 etc.). If after the subnet IP and the checked IP had the subnet mask applied to them, both IPs do match, then the checked IP is in the "subnet". Hi, Let me just add to that the fact that originally, non-contiguous strings of ones were allowed in a subnet mask. For example, you could have as subnet of (in binary) 1001.... That's why originally a subnet was specified as a full 32-bit AND mask. In practice this was hardly ever used, so with the move to CIDR addressing the original notation was abandoned. If the string of ones must be contiguous, the whole subnet mask can be described by one number -- e.g. /16, /24 etc. Gavrie, -- Gavrie Philipson Netmor Applied Modeling Research Ltd. = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

GNU parted is supposed to be able to do that correctly. You might also want to try (commercial) Partition Magic, as it's more user friendly. However, the docs for both products advise to back up your data before resizing partitions. For example, if you lose power in the middle of resizing, your data may very well be dead. raid on startup
Hi All Just started to discover the wonder world of Software raid. I made my /var partion raid level 1 (mirroring) But to start it I have to unmount /var fully and only then run raidstart. How can I active the raid while the system reboot ? Second. The HOWTO suggested that the / partion will be mirrored with cold copy and not raid, what is the opinion of the mailing user group ? -- -- Canaan Surfing Ltd. You are right. Please concentrate on preparing the draft and email me a postscript version as soon as you will have one. e-mail us all please! we may want to comment! and a perliminary draft with just the text (what are we gonna say there?) would be nice too. I also suggest bundling more than just one file format (like Ira and I did last time, because diffrent copyshops support diffrent formats. the popular word97 doc comes to mind...)
