I don't understand what you are trying to say: If they can't be

anything to do with Red Hat's? The way I see it, the only thing in
common between Red Hat and VA is that they both relied on GNU/Linux

right.

Other than that, Red Hat broke even last quarter while VA still has (I
think) long to go...

Re: trying mozilla bidi

2001-04-23 Thread matial

Congrats to Ely!

I just want to remark that his result #3 problem with breaking hebrew
lines goes down instead of up could be a problem of displaying visual
Hebrew in narrow lines, meaning the problem stems from bad HTML writing,
not from the browser. In order to clarify this, you can, if you have
access to a Windows system, check how it displays with Internet Explorer.
If you don't, at least give us some URLs so that we can check.

In general, all findings concerning Web sites should mention the URL in
question, this saves time and is not ambiguous. For instance, what is
haaretz' URL?

* good detecting of hebrew encoding succeed on all sites beside haaretz

* go button title is still backwards

* problem with breaking hebrew lines goes down instead of up

* most widgest seems to show hebrew right (all the ones I saw)

* english/hebrew text works fine

* a bit bugs with some sites before fully loading crashed only once so far

* digets also seems to work fine

I think I would wait few days before rpming it anyhow..

This is a problem with Haaretz's site, not with the browser.

They have this silly belief that:

  meta charset=visual

should be enough to tell a browser that the page is a visual hebrew one.

 * go button title is still backwards

 * problem with breaking hebrew lines goes down instead of up

That's visual hebrew, right?

One other thing:

mozilla's build still fails if the date format is hebrew. If you have
LANG=he or he_IL or iw or iw_IL or hebrew , you should probably set
LC_TIME=C for building mozilla

The problem occours only in the subdirectory nsprpub .

(the hebrew date string contains a ' char, which confuses the makefile. I
filed a bug report. Wasn't fixed yet. And it hasn't yet annoyed me enough
to issue a fix, as the workaround is simple enough)

That does not imply cluelessness, it's a highly inflammatory statement.

KDE and GNOME are well documented, unlike their Windows counterpart, which aims
at obscuring very important details. Microsoft has simply convinced the general

LINUX CONCERNED CITIZENS

2001-04-23 Thread Rafram Chaddad

KOL KORE!!! KOL KORE!!! KOL KORE!!!

For all of you LINUX people who want to make a change!
This is the time to take action, and overull the unjustified dominance of
the half-debugged Microsoft excuses. The community has it's chance to grow
and become relevant, here, in the Holy-Microsoft-land!

We've come to maturity! The biggest LINUX event ever orchestrated in Israel
is about to happen:
In May 29th a LINUX Insta-Party will take place in Jerusalem in a space at
Shivtey-Yisrael 12 st. (Behind Safra Square). The party will include an
unprecedented number of 15 Installation-positions, ready for the people.

But this is not all!
It will be a whole-concept event about installations, which means, it will
include interactive sound and lighting installations, done by bright
multimedia artists.
The event is organized by the REFRAME group for Art, Politics and Social
Change.
It will be covered by media reporters of various fields from Computing to
Art.
This, we think, will be a great chance for the Israeli LINUX community to
reveal itself, and more important: Reveal the free software idea to a larger
crowd.

We Reframers, activists and eggheads alike, wish to push LINUX and Free
Software forward!
For this, we ask for your help!!!

First, we still need volunteering LINUX-installers, if you are interested
just write to Rafram:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Noting a phone number will help a lot).
THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO ALL! NO CHARGE REQUIRED!!!
WE GET NO FEE!!!

And of course

Nah. From the authors's statement it looks that he is quite clueful,
but is strongly and unconventionally opinionated (or at least, quoting
the opinion of someone else who is strongly and unconventionally
opinionated). If he were truely clueless he'd say something like I
wouldn't call it a GUI while you still have to use the command line
for most things. His original statemet is too different from the
usual media conception of Linux for me to believe that the difference
between his opinion and ours results from lack of knowledge. It
implies that he knows Gnome and KDE have many flashy themes, for
example.

But then again, I have never spoken to him... I wonder what he means
by GUI in the conservative sense.

Re: The wonderful world of GTK (rant)

Morning,

Evening,

Well, it seems that with Redhat 7.1 (and probably with Mandrake 8 -
not sure) - you'll get gtk 1.2.9 and glib 1.2.9, which... umm...
breaks the compatibility with all of whats related to fonts...

Upgrade to GTK+ and GLIB 1.2.10.

RPM's are not available yet, so compile them with the parameter:
--prefix=/usr or else gtk+ won't find glib (glib needs to be compiled
first).

Official RPMS may not be available yet, but you can *easily* create your own
rpms by doing rpm -ts gtk+-1.2.10.tar.gz and the same goes to
glib. Then you compile the src.rpm that was generated.

Don't forget to remove the gtk+ and gtk+-devel and glib (and yes,
glib-devel) RPM's before installing the new compiled ones (unless you
got the RPM's - currently available only to SuSE).

another reason why I love so much gtk...

Please, no flame wars here, but I find that glib and gtk+ rpms are
much more easy to get than qt rpms. That is, if you bother to look in
the tar.gz and see that it actually contains a spec file. I thought
that Ximian would be a little more responsive, and will produce their
own rpm version for Mandrake, Redhat and the other distributions, but
they are lagging behind, for no apparent reason (to me at least).
BTW, from my personal experience, there are packages which do not contain
spec files, but the spec file is created after running
configure. LAME (an mp3 encoder) and ProFTP are two names that come to
mind.

Cheers,
Yosi

KDE 2.2 Alpha

2001-04-23 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo

Hi People,

For those who have Redhat 7.x and wants the latest KDE - you can now take it
from:
http://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/kde/unstable/2.2alpha1/distribution/rpm/RedHat/7.1/i386/
(other then Redhat, SuSE is there also).

This is a TOTALLY unstable release. I know, because I compile it every 2
days. Konqueror is broken also a bit broken (go to linuxtoday.com or
theregister.com to see what I mean)..

So why am I bothering to write it? simple - because it got some new features
which are stable like kde-db (kde database backend support) for MySQL,
InforMix, and Postgre-SQL and you can play with it...

Enjoy,
Hetz

2001-04-23 Thread Ilan Finci

Hi,
Does anyone know of a fast SuSE mirror (not only the distribution, also
the updates they post to their ftp), preferably in Israel?
Can this mirror be add to IGLU site (which gives me great transfer rate
with ADSL)?

Thanks,
Ilan
