Re: go-linux-go!
Just got back. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do a full summary, but I can make a few points: 1 - As expected it was much more commercial and less technical than in the past. 2 - The general feeling was no longer that someone has to prove that Linux is here to stay. It's now obvious :-) 3 - Most lectures were really trying to sell services. 4 - Benny (?) Davidovitch of the Davidovitch bakery explained why his business has moved almost totaly to Linux and mentioned that when users (who were used to Windows) asked questions about the new interface, he told them it was a top secret test version of Windows 97. That made everyone happy and he's had no complaints since. 5 - Eli Marmor, Shoshana Forbes and Yonatan ben Avraham introduced OpenOffice 2.0. Amazingly, Eli and Shoshana were the only speakers to actually use Linux for their slides (and, of course, for Shoshana's demo of new OO features). All other speakers used Powerpoint :-(. Despite a minor glitch at the beginning of Eli's presentation, he made a good recovery and Shoshana's demo was very convincing (although I'm admittedly not impartial). 6 - Aside from Davidovitch and the OpenOffice presentation, nobody seems to care about the desktop - all the emphasis was on servers. Ness declared that they are entering the market with the intent of supplying and supporting only servers, SGI spoke about 10,000 CPU clusters, Novel obviously put most accent on databases, etc, etc, etc. On Tuesday 01 November 2005 10:29, Muli Ben-Yehuda wrote: If anyone who attended go-linux today feels like writing a short summary of what transpired, it will be appreciated. Just a guess, but I'd say over 500. In any case, there was not enough room in the lecture hall and chairs had to be added - and many people were in the display area at any given time. The display area included Ness (late wakers, let's see what they swing), Aduva, someone selling books, Oracle, Nisha HR, Emet, IBM, PenguinIT and someone peddling CRM. If I forgot anyone, please tell me. The focus of this years go-linux seems to be me-too! It is quite obvious that Ness is me-toing, Xioma (the CRM peddlers) are me-toing (i.e. going to a Linux show), Emet is its old self (which is saying not a little), IBM... truth be told, I am not sure I understood what IBM did at the show, but they had at least one interesting and (GASP) knowledgable guy on the spot. Aduva was represented by two very disparate people - Lior Kissos and one other. Lior is somewhat overenthusiastic about Aduva's products, but that is quite refreshing - seeing an older guy not yet jaded. I talked to the PenguinIT people a bit - they seem quite get-go about this Linux thing. While interesting, this is a bit monomanic, and I think a bit wrongheaded - Linux is well and good, but is not sliced bread... The talks - which I listened to VERY partially - seemed to posses the great depth of tile and the great breadth of a needle. And Oracle... is. Marc -- ---MAV Marc A. I had a booth there and we were demonstrating our latest version of Audva OnStage (3.0) while managing 4 different remote Linux servers, including Linux/VM on a mainframe overseas. A lot of people showed up, and clients were beginning to report that they are starting to run Linux servers in the hundreds - which is a nice start for Israel. Library.
Hi all, I was wondering if there is a library (books) software out there that is free and preferably in Hebrew. I wish to find something to my sisters school, which currently uses paper cards. A plus/must would be the ability to use a bar code reader. However, it is possible that bar code readers doesn't need support (just scan and print to screen the code), but i have little experience with those. 10x. Koha (http://www.koha.org/) - A full featured library system used by academic libraries in the world. - I don't know about Hebrew, but it has been localized to several languages so it should be possible. - Looks as an overkill for your purpose, but maybe it can be deployed partially. 2. Tellico (http://www.periapsis.org/tellico/) - A personal collection manager for KDE (I use it for my books). - Support Hebrew although the interface hasn't been translated yet (you can do it easily). - Can search Amazon and load meta-info from there -- save time! - Not designed to track loans etc :-( Seems like you need something in the middle. Last time I played with Koha was about 3-4 years ago. It looks like a live project so you may want to test it now (please report conclusions).
