Mounting a DD'd ReiserFS image?

2008-01-09 Thread Geoffrey S. Mendelson
I saw this question on another mailing list, not related to Linux.

Someone has a DD dump of a ReiserFS partition. Can it be mounted as a
file and read? Under Linux, I would try mounting it as a loopback
device, but will even that work?

I know that some file systems store data as sector addresses and DD
images can only be put back on a disk of the same geometry and in the
same place, while others only store LBA for example, ISO9660 and UDF.

They want to mount it under MacOS (which is BSD) if that helps
(and any pointers to programs/drivers).

Thanks in advance,

Geoff.

Can you give an example? Last time I worked with a Unix filesystem that
was disk-geometry-aware was on Ultrix, where you told mkfs the disk
model you have, and it looked it up in some table and optimized the fs
for this model. Even it was not tied to the disk - you could later do dd
to a partition on another disk and mount it with no problem.

No idea, sorry - both about loop mounts in BSD and a reiserfs driver for
it.

Isn't copying over the net the easiest? From another machine, which will
run Linux (perhaps a livecd)?

Under Linux it will work

Under MacOS it will not work - no ReiserFS support that I know of

Upcoming Tel Aviv Linux Club Activities

2008-01-09 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all!

We have a busy schedule for you in the Tel Aviv Linux Club:

http://www.cs.tau.ac.il/telux/

On 20-January-2008, Micha Silver will give a presentation about Open Source
Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Afterwards by popular demand we will have a mini-series about Using the
Linux/UNIX Command Line (on 27-January by Elizabeth Sterling), and then a
week later, an Introduction to Linux Scripting (on 3-February by Sagiv
Barhoom).

Then two weeks afterwards, Yuval Tal will give a presentation about XBMC - The
Xbox Media Center ( http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/ ).

More information can be found on the site:

http://www.cs.tau.ac.il/telux/

I should also note that the Israeli Ruby enthusiasts (
http://rubyisrael.org/ ) will meet in the same place on 13-January (also on
Sunday), and possibly sometime in February.

Regards,

Shlomi Fish

[Fwd: Windows Server 2008 Application Compatability Lab Invitation]

2008-01-09 Thread Eli Marmor

The forwarded message was sent from Microsoft to Apache Software
Foundation.

I'm sure that there is an authentic good will, and it looks as
çæåï àçøéú äéîéí: åâø æàá òí ëáù

(the utopic vision of peace and Geula).

The last paragraph in the forwarded message mentions the political
issue, and I recommend to follow the link to Ramji's blog (about a
similar co-operation of Microsoft with Mozilla).

As you see, I have only good things to say about it, and please don't
make this thread dirty by trying to find what is the evil purpose
behind these steps.

Howdy,

(William Rowe from the ASF suggested I post this to your dev@ list)

My name is Garrett Serack, and I am the Community Program Manager in the Open
Source Software Labs here at Microsoft.

I would like to extend an official invitation to the Apache Software Foundation
to participate in the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Compatibility Labs here
in Redmond. The Compatibility lab is scheduled for

   Monday February 25 2008 through Wednesday February 28 2008.

(the lab is actually booked thru Thurs the 29th, so an extra day is possible)

WHAT IS IT?
---
The Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Lab is an event where we
invite companies to bring their applications into our lab, and have the
opportunity to perform compatibility testing with Windows Server 2008. In
addition to gaining insight into Windows Server 2008, this also includes
unprecedented access to various product groups (developers, architects and PMs)
inside of Microsoft, who can lend their assistance, give technical information
and answer design questions you may have.

Normally, we request companies send 3-4 attendees, and we usually have 3-4
companies in the lab in a given week. Given the ASF's size and breadth, we've
reserved the entire lab for the week for the Apache Foundation, and we'd like
to see somewhere in the range of 15-18 people from a wide variety of projects
attend.

WHO SHOULD COME?

We would be very interested in having several people from the Tomcat, HTTPD and
Axis groups attend. Other projects including APR, Apache C++ Standard Library
project, Harmony, and Maven.NET also come to mind. Any project that is impacted
by the release of Windows 2008, or is looking to solve Windows-specific project
issues, may profit from this opportunity.

We are interested in having each project who deals with Microsoft Windows
compatibility or portability to bring small contingent of 1 or 2 developers to
the table, so please chat within your own PMC or even your
