Perhaps you can start by saying which of the above you feel ddd does not
provide.

it provides most what i need, however it is not too friendly - the way it
displays variables, the position of the windows. it does not color the code,
etc ...
basicly i look for better look-and-feel.

In that case, it's just a matter of searching for another gdb front end
until you find something you like. A non-comprehensive list includes
kdbg, and the debuggers integrated into kdevelop and eclipse. There may
be others.

Personally I like insight.

It's also worth while learning the command line interface as except for showing
the current position in the code (which is very hard to follow) everything
else is very very powerful (printing memory data in all sorts of ways, writing
gdb functions, setting default breakpoints for the project automatically when
gdb comes up, etc.)

The eclips CDT debug perspective is a very good frontend for gcc.
I do find it a bit annoying that it doesn't display std containers like
strings, maps and lists in a friendly manner (Visual Studio's debugger is
excellent in this sense).
I found kdbg a bit less friendly, but haven't tried it in a couple of years,
perhaps it has improved since.

You have to enable RTL support first, it's somewhere in the options dialog

Anyone know how to fix this problem? This is the machine my kids use

Eclipse CDT can be used as a nice gdb frontend - IMO it's as close as
you can get, on Linux, to visual-studio-like eye candy.

If you use Emacs 22 for development, then I recommend its gdb mode with
its watch window (based on speedbar), stack view, breakpoint view, local
vars etc. Works nicely even when cross-debugging remote applications
with gdbserver.

I often find myself running gdb with its built-in text user interface
(gdb -tui or type wh in an already open gdb session). Pretty handy,
would be ideal for me if it also had syntax highlighting.

Hope this helps,
Avi.
