Re: Semi-forced upgrade of browser - problematic when it is Iceweasel

2010-02-18 Thread Lior Kaplan
Hi Omer,

Well, for home use you can use testing instead of stable to get more updated
software.
In that case, you might want to follow the security team's policy about
testing.

Firefox/iceweasel 3.6 won't enter unstable in the near future, as this
requires an update for xul, which is also used by thunerbird/icedove.

The maintainer said he is focused on 3.5.8 for the next stable.

First of all this is Israel. Perfectly working connections fail at the
first sign of rain. :-(

Second if you have 99% reliabilty that means one day out every two and
a half months. Most people have much better reliability, most less
than 99.9% (more than 12 hours a year out). Note that if you have two
connections, one with BEZEQ and one ISP and the other with HOT and a
different ISP it does not guarentee you 100% reliability.

I did find out that BEZEQ has a test system. If you change your ISP to
1 @1 and any password, it will open a PPoE link and
flood it at maximum speed forever. If the link fails, it's BEZEQ's
fault. If it runs clean, it's not, it's your ISP or your PPoE software/
router.

The IP can change for many reasons. But that's not the point. When you buy an
Internet connection you expect a public IP, not a NATed IP. Unless you're at an
airport. They could at least have provided the user with administrator access
to the box that is holding his public IP.

They do offer a voice mailbox, but what does that have to do with reliability?
There's nothing more annoying than a phone call cut in the middle. And that can
happen even if service is lost for just a few seconds. This is something that
you otherwise may never notice, even if you're running a server.

And reliability probably does depend on the area, but also very much on luck,
it appears. I had it working fine here for a year until disconnections started,

Not sure I understand how your internal IP can change. You can always ask to
have the MP202
offer the same IP to the other device. One IP range dhcp.

If you are running a server on your internet connection you should know how
reliable it is.
Doesn't NV offer a voice mail box as part of their phone service? For me, both
cables and adsl are very reliable. Perhaps the internet reliability depends on
your location.

I think that with the current QOS of different land lines phone solutions, QOS
should be the least important criteria to consider.

2010-02-18 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Youtube cuts off support for non HTML-5? that will take ages, since IE7 nor
IE8 really supports well HTML-5.
HTML-5 in Firefox will not be really used since Google encodes video with
H.264, not with Ogg.

In short, I hardly see Youtube cuts of support for non HTML5 browsers for at
least a year, two years.

Thanks,
Hetz

Semi-forced upgrade of browser - problematic when it is Iceweasel

2010-02-18 Thread Omer Zak
Today when I visited http://www.youtube.com/, I was greeted by a message
that my browser will be unsupported soon, and my browser was the current
Iceweasel 3 version from Debian Lenny.

The earliest Firefox version to be supported is Firefox 3.6.
I quickly browsed http://backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php (the Debian
Backports), and found that Firefox 3.5.6 was backported to Debian Lenny
as Iceweasel 3.5.6. So I installed it to ease future upgrade to
Iceweasel 3.6 once it is available.

So now I hope that someone will backport and create Iceweasel 3.6 before
YouTube cuts off all support for non-HTML5-compliant browsers.
Otherwise, I may have to install Firefox 3.6 not as a Debian package.

  --- Omer
P.S.: the upgrade is only semi-forced because YouTube is a Nice To Have
rather than Essential.

I've had good luck so far using Spikko (www.spikko.com) for low volume
calling. The advantages are:

1. Free incoming number (DID).

2. Low cost for outgoing calls. (subsidized by incoming calls)
2a. You can add as little as (around) 25 NIS at a time.

3. Israeli servers (probably BBL)

4. SIP support (published) and IAX support (not published, but it
works).

Disadvantages:

1. No outgoing caller id (at least from IAX placed calls)

2. DID is for a cellular number, cost a lot of money to call. :-(

3. Web site is mostly IE only. Without IE you can't get customer
support. You can't add money with FireFox.

4. You get the same message if you are EITHER out of money or the line
is busy.

5. There is a 10 minute or so wait between registrations, so if you
disconnect from a softphone on your computer you have to wait to
reconnect via a handheld device.

Re: OT: Bezek via netvision

2010-02-18 Thread Alex Shnitman
Hi,

I'm using this service. If your infrastructure (HOT/ADSL) is reliable, it works
pretty reliably as well.

They give you the AudioCodes MP202 adapter, as someone has already mentioned.
One thing to note is that they put this adapter in front of your PC / router
(i.e. it connects to the modem, and the router connects to it), and it takes
your public IP to itself and performs NAT. They don't give you the password for
the administrator account on the device so basically you lose your public IP,
for what it's worth. This is absolutely ludicrous, to me. They set it up in DMZ
mode so that incoming connections are forwarded to your router / PC, but if
your internal IP changes for some reason, you need to bug them to reconfigure
their box. If you have anything at all that requires a public IP anyway
(dynamic DNS?), you're out of luck.

Another thing is that they set up traffic shaping on this box so that the VOIP
calls are not affected by heavy traffic, and the speed degradation is quite
noticeable.

Bottom line, the calls are cheap, but it screws with your Internet connection
in various ways, and it's basically only as reliable as your connection -- and
let me tell you that you don't realize how unreliable Internet infrastructure
is here until you put your phone on it.

If I were offered this deal now I wouldn't go for it.
