Just a wild thought:
 1. Configure the Xserver to have a virtual display size which is larger
than physical size.
 2. Direct the specific window to a non-visible area (but within the virtual
display size, so it will be refreshed) [hopefully, should be tested]
 3. Grab it.

If it works, you'll still have to find a way so the end user won't pan
the physical display across the virtual space -- maybe this can be
done with some window-manager configuration/key-bindings.

Does anyone know of a magnifying glass for X that magnifies areas that
are hidden by the magnifying glass' window? If so, this is precisely the
same problem that Valery is seeking an answer to.

I know that there are such apps in Windows (and I'm not sure how those
work either, I think using some kind of DirectPaint trickery).

I probably don't explain myself.

Application should run on the usual display and be visible.
But when certain button is pressed mentioned before window's content should be
captured.

I through about using Xvnc (and Xvbf) and even tried it.
The trouble is I need initialize connection to the new display and display's
colormap and who now what else. This application do a lot of
strange and complicate things in a rather messy way.
Make the same to the other display is not an easy task.

Is it a way to do it at the same display ?

You can probably run an Xvnc server (X server that sends updates out
through the vnc protocol, rather than actually updating screen). As far
as any software is concerned, this is a real screen, so you can run
anything on it. However, it does not need to be visible on any physical
display; Also, if the whole reason is to let this app work through the
network, then xvnc is a complete solution all by itself

XWindows - how capture window ?

2010-02-20 Thread Valery Reznic
Hi all.

I faced following problem:
I have X-Windows application. It has a lot of different functions and buttons.

When one of those buttons is pressed applications open a window
This window has a lot of different widgets inside (labels, pixmaps, buttons,
etc)

I need to capture this windows and save it content to the file.
It's not that hard - xgrabsc program do all the work.

But what is hard (at least hard for me :) is to capture content of this window,
without it appearing on the screen.

I have source of this application, and can change it as I like.
The trouble is unless windows actually appears on the screen, xserver don't
bother to draw it.

My screen is 640x480 I tried to create window with offset 641 and 481 - i.e off
screen. It doesn't work. I.e window created and grabbed by xgrabsc, but it's
content is garbage.
When offse is 400and 400 then part of the window appears on the screen and part
not.
After grabbing this window I saw, that part that appears on screen looks OK,
but other part is garbage.

I also tried to use XComoposite extension - without any success.

Application is very, very ancient. It was written withusing Xlib functions and
Xt toolkit - hardly more.

Also application uses XSHM extension, i.e solution don't have be
"network-aware" - anyway this application doomed to work only locally by this
extension.

I by no mean X expert, may be I missed something obvious with XComposite
or just missed something

Do you have any ideas, how can I render this window off screen and capture it's
content ?

Valery.

‎Thanks, Geoff. I looks like I should probably terminate my contract
with them as soon as I can and then either make a new one or go to a
different company. This would be in order to get the consumer
protection that started in 2009. Actually, there is no question: they
have lost me as a customer. My next contract will be with either Mirs,
Pelephone or Cellcom.

After nine years as a happy Orange cellular subscriber, I bought an
N95 last June. It was sent for repair 12 times, and each time it came
back with the same issue. After the 12th time I sent it (29-12-2009) I
told them to just keep the damn thing, and bought another phone. Last
week (the phone was in Orange's possession for six weeks) I told them
to send the phone to me so that I could sell it. They say that the
phone was destroyed (Nigras) after one month in Orange's possession,
as per policy. There is nothing to do (Ain ma laasot) is the only
answer that they are giving me. Yes, I am in another big fight with
them, and it is probably going to the courts.

Stay away from Orange.

Stay away from Netvision as well.

Just to keep this in a related thread, Friday's Yediot in their "7
Days" section had a two page ad for Orange as a landline ISP. The ad
detailed the various benefits of using them as a land line phone
provider and as an ISP.

They had several plans which can either include VoIP only or Internet
and VoiP. The VoIP part can either be 40% (or less) calls to cell
phones, or no limit on the relative amount of calls to cell phones
versus other phones.

AFAIK you get an incoming number in the 07 range instead of the 054
(anyone actually know?)

In order to use their service you have to buy an 800 NIS "box" (which
can be spread out over 36 months) and provide your own aDSL line or
HOT connection. I do not think you can bring your own box, as it were
or connect to them via SIP.

I don't know anyone who uses Orange as their landline ISP nor their
VoIP services, so comments good or bad would be appreciated.

Yeah, I use BIND (otherwise known as named). But from having a quick
look around now it seems there are pre-prepared packages for various
distributions to set this up in a more convenient way. I did it by
hand, so can't vouch for these pages, but they look good and may help you:

http://embraceubuntu.com/2006/08/02/local-dns-cache-for-faster-browsing/

Of course, you could also just place some alternative nameservers in
/etc/resolv.conf to confirm if this solves your problem. I believe
google and opendns have publically usable servers.

Good luck :)
