2010-05-25 Thread Erez D
ok, it was a problem of jumpers on the motherboard.

i am now able to start an X-server on the left card using X -layout
LeftMonitor , then i start an x-server on the right monitor using X :1
-layout RightMonitor

the problem is:
if i press ctrl-alt-f7 i see only the left monitor.
if i press ctrl-alt-f8 i see only the right monitor.

is there a way to make them both work at the same time ?

RE: Hebrew calendar software creators: can you notify this list when updating the calendar?

2010-05-25 Thread Ron Varburg

I intend to file the following report.  Any comments?

Package: bsdmainutils
Version: 8.0.11
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

calendar.judaic was last updated in 2007.  Due to the nature of
the Jewish calendar, it renders the file unusable.  To address the
difficulties facing the maintaner, a python script is included.  This
script offers the maintainer a way to create the file as required.
The script is not limited to a single year.  Just enter the desired
year as an argument in the command line.  I suggest to keep this
script in the Debian directory of the source package.

$ cat calendarJudaic.py
#! /usr/bin/python
# Filename: calendarJudaic.py

# License: no warranty close + no license (public domain)
#
# Creates a calendar.judaic file, which is suitable for inclusion
# in Debian's bsdmainutils package.  Up to the introductory of
# this script the calendar.judaic file was not updated regulary.
# Probably because updating it is time consuming.  This python
# script let anyone create that file, for any year.  Its output is
# written to stdout.  It requires the libhdate-python package.

I intend to file the following report.  Any comments?

I still believe that the whole approach of having holidays of a single year
(it doesn't matter if 2007 or 2010) is wrong. It not only means that the
distro needs to update this list every year, it also means that you can't
find out when next year's holidays are (and sometimes next year could be
next month).

So I'd look for a way to somehow use a calendar.judaic file which contains
holidays for multiple years (I have no idea if that's possible).

If you absolutely can't, I have another idea: Instead of putting a fixed file
for 2010 in the distro, and have the distro update it in 2011, why not have
the distro include the *script*, which will be run automatically once a year
via a cron job? (which would make it the rarest-running cron-job in history
;-)).

Nadav.

1) Figure out why Debian ships an out of date file
2) To address those difficulties

It must be. I am not an expert on Hebrew calendar, but I use XEmacs
calendar and I have never had any problem finding out holiday dates
and stuff for any year, not just the current one.

A quick check shows that the solution is in

/usr/share/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/calendar/cal-hebrew.el

(there is a corresponding GNU emacs file), which says

;;;

;;; cal-hebrew.el --- calendar functions for the Hebrew calendar

;; Human-Keywords: Hebrew calendar, calendar, diary

GNU license stuff snipped - OG

;;; Synched up with: FSF Emacs 22 CVS 2007-03-30

;;; Commentary:

;; This collection of functions implements the features of calendar.el and
;; diary.el that deal with the Hebrew calendar.

;; Technical details of all the calendrical calculations can be found in
;; ``Calendrical Calculations: The Millennium Edition'' by Edward M. Reingold
;; and Nachum Dershowitz, Cambridge University Press (2001).

;;

So, the people who implemented it for X?Emacs wrote a book on how to
do it - easy to find on Amazon as

http://www.amazon.com/Calendrical-Calculations-Nachum-Dershowitz/dp/0521702380/ref=dp_ob_title_bk?ie=UTF8qid=1274819022sr=1-1

- and I do not see anything in the code that would limit it to a
particular year.

Without any further research, I have to agree with Nadav - anybody who
does anything year-specific does something wrong.

By the way, the code seems to give the right parasha name - another
question that I recall was asked on this forum relatively recently.

means that you can't find out when next year's holidays are (and
sometimes next year could be next month).

So I'd look for a way to somehow use a calendar.judaic file which
contains holidays for multiple years (I have no idea if that's
  possible).

(there is a corresponding GNU emacs file), which says

 ;;;

;;; cal-hebrew.el --- calendar functions for the Hebrew calendar

;; This collection of functions implements the features of calendar.el
and ;; diary.el that deal with the Hebrew calendar.

So, the people who implemented it for X?Emacs wrote a book on how to
do it - easy to find on Amazon as

 http://www.amazon.com/Calendrical-Calculations-Nachum-Dershowitz/dp/052
1702380/ref=dp_ob_title_bk?ie=UTF8qid=1274819022sr=1-1

 - and I do not see anything in the code that would limit it to a
 particular year.

Without any further research, I have to agree with Nadav - anybody who
does anything year-specific does something wrong.

By the way, the code seems to give the right parasha name - another
question that I recall was asked on this forum relatively recently.

But parahot are not always the same in Israel and in the Diaspora.
