Re: Should beginners work with WSL?
Hi, I'm using git bash - by installing Git for Windows, I get a bash shell with most of the commands I need from Linux, and I can run it also when not related to git. For example diff, awk, etc. Also if for some reason I need a real Linux machine, I can SSH to one of my Ubuntu servers, and run my command remotely from there. I never had a need to run a Linux app that is not a shell command on my desktop. אורי u...@speedy.net On Sun, Feb 6, 2022 at 11:44 AM Steve Litt wrote: > אורי said on Sun, 6 Feb 2022 0 > > >Personally I never used WSL, and I have been using Linux servers and > >Windows desktops for more than 20 years. > > Being a huge POSIX fan, I'm sure I'd use it if I had Windows machines. > > Sorry how my left to right settings garbled the reference to אורי . I know the focus of your criticism wasn't aimed at me, but I do take it to heart. I posted WSL without explaining what it was. I'm not sure whether I assumed people would know what it was, or whether anyone who didn't know what it was would also not know how to answer my question. Either way, yeah, I guess I should have spelled it out. In my defense, WSL _is_ how the feature is usually referred to. It's even the command line that installs it. Aviram Jenik said on Sat, 5 Feb 2022 20:15:58 -0800 >LMGTFY: >https://lmgtfy.app/?q=wsl+linux > >- Aviram I'm sorry, but questioning "what is WSL" doesn't justify an LMGTFY. The original post said nothing about Windows. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_information_technology_initialisms didn't list "WSL". Neither did https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computing_and_IT_abbreviations#W . Neither did https://techterms.com/category/acronyms . The LMGTFY you created still took about 2 minutes research to find. Let me tell you how I handle acronyms, because I'm not a WAD (Walking Acronym Dispenser). See how I did that? If there's a reasonable chance that some readers won't know an acronym, the first time I use it I spell it out and put the acronym in parenthesis, or use the acronym and put the phrase in parenthesis. That's no hardship on me, and that way, my readers don't need to take two minutes to look up an easy acronym, or ten minutes on this one. And don't get me started about acronyms meaning five different things, and having to research for the closest fit. Glib use of acronyms doesn't indicate intelligence, and refusal to research obscure ones before asking the user of the acronym doesn't indicate stupidity or laziness. SIOOT. Spell It Out One Time.
