Aaron Swartz, a brilliant person, a sad ending

http://www.economist.com/news/obituary/21569674-aaron-swartz-computer-programmer-and-activist-committed-suicide-january-11th-aged-26-aaron

Swartz was well-known in technology circles for helping develop the RSS web
feed format and the popular site Reddit, among other accomplishments. At
the time of his death, he was facing 13 felony charges and up to 50 years
in prison: Prosecutors had accused him of using MIT's network to download
too many scholarly articles from an academic database called JSTOR.
- Swartz's friends and family have said they believe he was driven to his
death by a justice system that hounded him needlessly over an alleged crime
with no real victims. [He was] forced by the government to spend every
fiber of his being on this damnable, senseless trial, his partner Taren
Stinebrickner-Kauffman said at the memorial, with no guarantee that he
could exonerate himself at the end of it.

Tom and Guy - since you both mentioned printers that do scan when
there's no ink, I'd be happy to know what specific models. And it goes
without saying that the scanning must work under Linux.

Canon MX-310. I'd probably be better off with a laser printer, but for now
this is what I'm using. Yes, it works in Linux. I remember I chose a driver
from a different, but similar model. I don't remember which one. Maybe a
Canon Pixma.

Mac OsX uses CUPS for printing, so, lately, pretty much all of them are

Also, a while back HP were writing their own open source drivers for

I have a Brother MFC all-in-one (cannot recall the exact model) , The

Keep in mind that if you print mostly black and white (greyscale) documents
that a laser printer is MUCH cheaper when you consider the price of toner /
cartridges. Also, inkjet printers use up the color cartridge even if you
only print only greyscale documents (why?).

In both laser and inkjet the cost of the printer is negligable, you must
include the cost of toner / cartridges.

My Canon inkjet print / fax / copy / scan will scan and copy even when the
ink cartridge is empty. But it will not print a greyscale document when the
color cartridge is empty - it uses one cartridge for all colors :-(

True. However, the best support can be given by a pro who has a cooperation
of the hosting company. Most of them will never cooperate, as they earn
better (despite their awful quality of work) with an external
person/company. So, your main channel - the hosting supplier, will probably
not like you using it as a marketing channel, and you can hardly ever know
(without some extensive search or cracking skills) which hosting service
 holds which customers.

 2011/11/14 Hetz Ben Hamo het...@gmail.com

 Hi,

I'll give you one: Supporting hosting customers.

Explanation: there are over 40 businesses here in Israel which provides
VPS and dedicated server renting solutions.
Most of those businesses (including mine) provide the machine to the
 customers as unmanaged,
which means: the support you'll get relates *only* to network (if your
VPS/Server) can communicate to and from the server
The other part of support: shutting down/restart/pause/reset the server.

Anything else - you're on your own. You can purchase a bank of hours for
support or you can get emergency support for a higher price.

There are, of course, some hosting businesses which will give you managed
service, but in most case I would strongly recommend to get a freelance who
will do the job for the client.

Why? because they *SUCK AT IT* ! spreading root privileges all over the
place, changing permissions of directories and files to 777, opening the
internal firewall (if it exists, most of the time it's not) to everyone+his
dog, and other nonsense stuff, and I'm also talking about the *BIG*
providers which are also ISP - they suck, period!

I think that this niche is mostly empty and people can get some
 jobs/contracts with such customers.

If anyone want to register himself, I have a neutral forum for that. see
 here: http://hosts-forum.com/index.php

 Hope this helps,
 Hetz

Find Free Software a New Voice

2011-10-08 Thread Tom Balazs
http://www.readwriteweb.com/enterprise/2011/10/why-fsf-founder-richard-stallm.php

It's time for free software to find a new voice. Once again, Free Software

This time, Stallman says that he's glad Steve Jobs is
gonehttp://stallman.org/archives/2011-jul-oct.html#06_October_2011_%28Steve_Jobs%29.

It's no secret that RMS and Steve Jobs held firmly opposed views when it
comes to software freedom. I didn't expect Stallman to hold a vigil at an
Apple store for Jobs, or even to say much of anything at all. But his
ill-considered response does nothing for the cause of free software, and
actually does a lot of damage.

Stallman and the Free Software Foundation, have long expressed a very public
dislike for Apple and Jobs. They've conducted campaigns against the
iPadhttp://www.defectivebydesign.org/ipadand Stallman has a history
of speaking out about the iPhone and other closed
devices. Though I've often disagreed with the tone and language of
Stallman's commentary on closed devices, he makes good points about software
freedom. But his latest, posthumous, attack on Jobs demonstrates that
Stallman has no business being spokesperson of anything ... (follow link

RMS, Hosts Must Support Boycott?

2011-06-13 Thread Tom Balazs
I would have been happy to say this thread had run it's course, but this
response from RMS and (his apparent associate / organizer) Kobi Snitz is
too much.

Mr. Snitz advises both myself and RMS that in order to make sure the talk in
Israel meets the standards of the BDS-supporting organization which is
hosting RMS then the talks in Israel must be both sponsored by a BDS
supporting organization and held in a hall owned/run by a BDS supporting
organization. Snitz's words were, in order to not violate the boycott the
sponsors and the place should be dissenting israeli groups and
institutions.

It seems that Mr. Snitz is a mathematician, anarchist, and leader in the BDS
(boycotts, divestment and sanctions) against Israel movement. If you'd like
to read more about Mr. Snitz you can use the links below. (Responses from
Kobi Snitz and from RMS are also below.)

http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/features/shin-bet-puts-israeli-anarchists-in-crosshairs-1.333140
- He was not the only anarchist the Jewish department dealt with that
week. Five days earlier, Kobi Snitz was attending a conference when he
received a call from an unidentified number. The caller told him, 'Shalom,
this is Rona from the Shin Bet. I'm sure you've heard about me.'
 - She said she wanted to invite me for a friendly conversation and for
us to exchange thoughts, said Snitz, 39, an anarchist activist and a
mathematician. He asked whether he was being called in for an interrogation
and when she said no, he said, no thanks. In 2009, Snitz served a 20-day
sentence over an attempt a few years earlier to prevent the demolition of a
house in Kharbatha, a village west of Ramallah. Two months ago, he was given
another five-day sentence over a protest against the Second Lebanon War in
2006.

I am missing the earlier part of this correspondence but I can say that in
order to not violate the boycott the sponsors and the place should be
dissenting israeli groups and institutions. In tel aviv my first thought was
the women's coalition for peace. I talked to their head last night and she
said that they've never done anything about free software and she feels it

hall. I am not sure if they have requirements about what sort of
organization it can be rented from. Kobi could tell you.

   2. The dates: Are the correct dates the evening of Thursday 21-Jul-2011,
and
   the afternoon of Friday 22-Jul-2011?

Yes.

RMS, Hosts Must Support Boycott?

2011-06-10 Thread Tom Balazs
After Dr. Richard M. Stallman (RMS) cancelled his lecture at the University
of Haifa I tried to arrange an alternative meeting hall for him. Like some
other people I thought that all that was required was not an Israeli
university or perhaps not a prominent symbol of the state.

Yesterday (9-Jun-11) RMS sent me a response which indicates that there is an
even bigger problem. According to him, the Palestinians' boycott is so
strict that they object to [him giving lectures hosted by] all organizations
except those that support the boycott.

My opinion is that under such circumstances RMS should refuse to speak, or
at least have a sudden and unavoidable scheduling conflict which
necessitates cancelling his visit.

If this really is the situation then I will not be searching for lecture
halls for him and will not be attending his lectures either.

Tom

Our theater is very busy during the month of June, and the date you had
   mentioned wouldwnt work.

My visit is in July, not June. Maybe that was misunderstanding.

However, it seems that the Palestinians' boycott is so strict that
they object to all organizations except those that support the boycott.
I don't know whether they object if such an organization rents a hall.

So I must charge the minimum cost of 750 N.I.S in order to be able to
   operate the Theater.

How many dollars is that?
I have no idea whether I have this much in my pocket.
