any brandname machine with the right specs will do. a word of warning
though - don't hope to scale the specs, purchase the max set of
hardware you'll need right away - upgrades can be more expensive than
the machine itself.

If you expect to need more than a single server, maybe a beefy machine
that can carry multiple VMs would be preferable.

 Hi Everyone,
This is my new address (was j...@hadassah.ac.il).
I searched the archives and only found a few answers to the
same request that I made in 2009.
I would appreciate any updated suggestions.
The server needs a good RAID 5 card and, if possible, a dual
 and redundant power supply.
The budget is up to 10,000 shekels.
The computer should be able to serveĀ  80 - 100 client computers.

 Thanks,

Hi

If you want to save, you don't need a raid controller. Use a software raid.
Installing The OS on a software raid is not easy.
On regular computers installing many disks may be a problem. buy adapter to
install the Hard disk in an empty CD bay.

Have fun

  Hi

  Can't be done.

You're (to put it candidly) saying - what DESKTOP machine with lotsa disks be
cheap!

The answer - with your budget - none. Five 1TB disks will cost you some 2K
ILS. A RAID controller will cost another 600-1500 ILS, say 1K. This is your
budget and no desktop yet.

Either reduce capacity oir increase cost.

hi!

We don't know what your other requirements are, but are you sure that a
desktop machine will be stable enough? If the single second-rate power
supply toasts (and probably fries a disk and the controller with it), can
you afford the 1 week downtime? What about backups?

I have just such a server at home. It serves 4 clients. It has 1.5TBx4
RAID5 (4.1 TB net) and runs samba. This is my 2nd server. It is active
for 3 month now. The 1st server (still active) had only 1.5 TB and ran
out of space. It is about 2 years old (serving from 20/7/2007).
Besides using it as a server it is used as a desktop.

The budget was about the same for both machines and is:

Box: Dual CPU E2200, 2GB memory,
 160 GB disk, RW DVD 1060 [1]
Disks - 4 * 1.5 TB 2130 [2]
SATA2 card, 4 ports (2 will suffice)150 [3]
some cables and fans 60

   3400
[1] - Bought in a sale in Mega (yes, the supermarket).
[2] - Bought in the USA in 1/09
[3] - STLAB, on both machine

Of course you should have a UPS (I do).

Here are some data about it:

To this day, I installed Linux on many machines (brand names and

be Linux compatible.
