RR exact details of configuration (it could be that I downloaded some plugin)

I use GAIM to connect to MSN, AIM, ICQ and googletalk, and it works
perfectly. It can do more protocols, generally, I just have nobody to talk
to with them :)

Connecting is quite simple. Dont worry, you have to use a very similar setup.

Did anyone else encounter problems connecting to ICQ from kopete? If
yes, how did he work around them? Did anyone try editing
 ~/.kde/share/config/kopeterc manually?
Yes, the implementation of oscar in Kopete is a piece of shit. You probably
will not be able to send and recieve hebrew messages. If you want more
details, just ask, I can tell you what the developers told me, but it will
not help you fix the problem.

Hi,

I did connect to an MSN Messenger with gaim
(http://gaim.sourceforge.net/)
on RH9; it was quite a time ago ; I don't remember the
exact details of configuration (it could be that I downloaded some plugin) but it was not difficult
(when you add a new accoount you should
select from a list of protocols : ICQ,MSN messenger ,
Jabber and others).

Thanks, Amos Shapira and Rami Rosen.

I use kopete and when I start it up, various Qt related error messages
show up but it seems to work OK.
I ended up createing a new account on MS-Passport and then saw no
failure to connect (but no actual communication with the user in
question either, the user is probably offline at the moment).

I still have a problem connecting to ICQ from kopete (however licq has
been working for me for long time).
The problem is that the password, which works on licq - does not work on
kopete connection.
I tried to delete and recreate the ICQ account definition in kopete, but
this was not successful.

I did verify that kopete is trying to connect to the same ICQ server
+port as licq.

Did anyone else encounter problems connecting to ICQ from kopete? If
yes, how did he work around them? Did anyone try editing
~/.kde/share/config/kopeterc manually?

Are you reffering to the MSN network? It's trivial.
Both amsn and kopete connected without a hitch back when I used
 them.
apt-cache search msn will turn up more clients (jabber-msn,
 tmsnc, gaim)

If yes - what was the recipe used to accomplish this end?
  - Package/s

apt-get install amsn or ... kopete
  - Manual configuration required

Not that I remember. It was all done through the standard application GUI.

  - Full registration procedure assuming that you are not trying to reuse
  an existing account

That last one I never tried but at worst you can probably create a user
 through the web interface.

I use Kopete for my messaging needs.

MSN, ICQ, Yahoo Google Talk (jabber) all work nicely with no or
minimal configuration required.

GAIM is a good IM program too :)
