It is possible to create files over 2G in size in ReiserFS, provided the
kernel supports such a thing. I don't know about partition sizes.

I currently use ReiserFS on a 6GB partition, so the 2GB limitation doesn't
seem to apply here (ReiserFS v3.6.25, fs originally created with stock
Mandrake 7.2).

Just my two cents worth,

I think he was talking about 2GB file size, not partition size.. ;)

2001-05-07 Thread Yosi

Well, let us not forget that some of us are still using 2.2.x kernels
and while ReiserFS exists for both v2.2 and v2.4, XFS only exists for
v2.4

I see no reason to use reiserfs beside the fact xfs is not offecialy
in the kernel yet. I don't think it can even get close in reliabilty
and preformance is reisierfs even 64 bit?

Redhat 7.1 and kernel 2.4.x - combined - doesn't have that problem. I think
it's related to glibc...

I was referring to the partition size, as Shlomi posted that large files
were possible, but wasn't sure about the partition size.

I also tried creating a 2GB file on one of my ReiserFS partition, and it
stopped on the 2GB boundary. I'm not sure if that is due to a kernel
limitation (as Shlomi indicated), or a filesystem limitation, but I just
thought I should report it. (I'm using a 2.4.2 kernel)

Hope this helps to clear things out,
-Eyal

xfs and linux

2001-05-06 Thread Ely Levy

Hey,

Since it been few days already and no one wrote about it..
XFS 1.0 is released for linux I guess most people think now
yea well another FS what's the big deal. well this time it's not just
another FS it's sgi one and they hacked the kernel to add many features
linux needed for years
including direct I/O Space preallocation Transactionally recorded quotas
and more the problem is those patches won't get into 2.4.x series as they
need massive api changes.
this is a great perfurmance improvment.

more info at:

http://linux-xfs.sgi.com/projects/xfs/

the SGI install addon for rh7.1 (that let you install rh7.1 with xfs root)

Think it's any use for the home user as a replacement for ReiserFS as
