Joey Hess had a problem similar to what you described, though he noticed
it while using the pcmcia ricochet modem. He passed along this patch:

Damn bad luck. I love my ricochet, but have Metricom as the provider.
I've used it in the bay area, LA and OC area, Boulder, and NYC.

It was a snap to setup with the acm module, and I get almost full
115kbit throughput.

2 SCSI controllers causing boot problems...

2001-02-02 Thread Drew Bertola

I know I've seen this in the past, but the answer slips my mind and I
can't find anything in the archives.

I've just set up a box w/ an aic7xxx card. The boot drive hangs off
that card. During installation, the boot drive is sda. Lilo contains
"root=/dev/sda8".

I compiled a new kernel with the 3ware raid driver. When I rebooted,
the 3ware card driver must have been loaded first; /dev/sda8 was no
longer the root device.

How do I control the device designations during boot?

I resolved this issue by using yenta_socket.

For my RH7.0 system, /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia needs to be edited to show:

PCIC=yenta_socket

Re: Linux-2.4.1-pre11

2001-01-28 Thread Drew Bertola

Andrew's latest ACPI fixes (acpica-linux-2125 patched against
2.4.0) compile fine here and don't hang on my Vaio after loading
tables.

That's a start. I'll play around some more.

   Hello Linus,

can we please see Andrew's latest ACPI fixes ([Acpi] ACPI source release
   updated: 1-25-2001) in 2.4.1 final?

  Does it fix stuff? Andrew?

I'm running it here.. No problems yet on my Toshiba test laptop, which
is the same behavior (for me) on 2.4.0-pre10 vanilla.

 ACPI changelog, from
 http://developer.intel.com/technology/IAPC/acpi/index.htm follows...

Summary of changes for this label: 01_25_01

  Core ACPI CA Subsystem:
Restructured the implementation of object store support within the
interpreter. This includes support for the Store operator as well
as any ASL operators that include a target operand.

Partially implemented support for Implicit Result-to-Target conversion.
This is when a result object is converted on the fly to the type of
an existing target object. Completion of this support is pending
further analysis of the ACPI specification concerning this matter.

CPU-specific code has been removed from the subsystem (hardware directory).

New Power Management Timer functions added

  Linux OS Services Layer (OSL):
Moved system state transition code to the core, fixed it, and modified
  Linux OSL accordingly.

Fixed C2 and C3 latency calculations.

We no longer use the compilation date for the version message on
initialization, but retrieve the version from AcpiGetSystemInfo().

Incorporated for fix Sony VAIO machines.

  Documentation:
The Programmer Reference has been updated and reformatted.

  ASL Compiler:
  Version X2013:
Fixed a problem where the line numbering and error reporting could get out
of sync in the presence of multiple include files.

Unfortunately, pcmcia modules fail to load. I can't understand the
interaction.

The message displayed on boot when starting the service says:

ds: no socket drivers loaded

I resolved this issue by using yenta_socket.

For my RH7.0 system, /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia needs to be edited to show:

PCIC=yenta_socket

[OT] Vaio Brightness [WAS: Probably Off-topic Question...]

2001-01-26 Thread Drew Bertola

Ok, I stuffed Tridge's inb / outb program into a little gnome window. Just
seems easier to have a spinbox to adjust brightness. Shits and giggles.

You can find it at: http://drew.serialhacker.net/vaio_control.tar.gz

You either have to run it as root or throw the executable into
/usr/local/bin and set the sticky bit.

Does anyone know how to get the screen brightness control to work on a
Sony Vaio N505VE? There seems to be some sort of proprietary hook to get
it to work that requires their install of Windows. (This is a problem as
it was removed immediatly after purchacing the laptop.)

All the newer Vaios seem to have this problem. They rely on support from
Windows to control the brightness, instead of doing it through the BIOS,
like older machines. I don't know a solution. More annoyingly, they
won't hibernate, as they rely on Windows Me or 2000 doing it for them.
The APM hibernate in the BIOS seems to have gone. I have a Z505GAT,
which I think is the Asian version of the model sold in the US as the
Z505LE. I guess this will become the norm now none of the current
versions of Windows require any hibernation support from the BIOS. The
hibernate to swap patch for Linux really needs to get into the
mainstream, and be more thoroughly exercised.

if anyone finds a way of dimming the brightness make sure you post!
besides killing the battery, it also makes it hard to use in dark
places such as night flights. i feel as if i'm lighting up the
  cabin in these cases.

my vaio F-series used to sleep correctly under RH6.1. it now hangs
forever making the sleep mode much less useful.
Maybe it has some problems with the way you send it to sleep. It could
 have changed through the times...

 Cheers!

Re: The advantage of modules?

2001-01-05 Thread Drew Bertola

My best reasons are...

Development: You don't have to recompile the kernel a billion times
while working on a driver, you just recompile the module. Also, you
can debug, unload, fix, recompile, reload a module to add or fix
pieces of it all (hopefully) without rebooting.

Practical usage: When I take my laptop on the road I use ppp, so I
load it then. Most of the time I don't need it, so I don't load it.
