2.4.4 bug...

2001-05-20 Thread Slump

I found a bug in the patches for kernel 2.4.4.
When i use 2.4.4 clean, with no patches

hde: IBM-DTLA-307020, ATA DISK drive
hde: 40188960 sectors (20577 MB) w/1916KiB Cache, CHS=39870/16/63,
UDMA(100)

then, using kernel 2.4.4 with ac11 patch...

hde: IBM-DTLA-307020, ATA DISK drive
hde: 40188960 sectors (20577 MB) w/1916KiB Cache, CHS=39870/16/63,
UDMA(44)

why the hard-disk is found at udma 3??

--

-=[/home/slump]=- hdparm -t /dev/hde

/dev/hde:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.29 seconds = 27.95 MB/sec
--

-=[/home/slump]=- hdparm -X69 /dev/hde

/dev/hde:
setting xfermode to 69 (UltraDMA mode5)

-=[/home/slump]=- hdparm -t /dev/hde

/dev/hde:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.84 seconds = 34.78 MB/sec

My machine is an athlon 950, with abit-kt7raid motherboard. My hard-disk
is an IBM DTLA 307020 20gb UDMA 5.

thank's to all ;)

If this happens, either your kernel or hardware is seriously screwed --
this is a _never happens_ case. So I suggest that you try a pristine
kernel, most likely this one has been mangled.

kernel 2.4.4: BUG in ll_rw_blk.c?

The computer is a 500MHz PIII, with a 440BX chipset on the motherboard,
more data available if required (just ask) running debian potato. The only
nonstandard system component is a 2.1.3 libc6 compiled with the 2.4.4
kernel headers, to be able to use large files. Here come the

2.4.4 bug report, non-member post

2001-04-30 Thread Eric M. Hopper

I'm using a brand-new 2.4.4 kernel without devfs. If you need to know
some option I turned off or on while compiling, email me and I'll tell
you. I did use 'kgcc' (egcs-2.91.66) from RH 7.0.

I mounted an MSDOS floppy image using the 'vfat' filesystem through the
loopback device, and every program which tried to access files on this
filesystem was promptly killed, and this message appear in the kernel
logs:

On an unrelated note. After installing the 2.4.4 kernel, I'm getting
weird process hangs whenever I try to su from 'root' to anybody else.
If I run strace on 'su' when I do this, it works fine. When su hangs, I
kill it, and it tells me it's killing the child shell process, then,
after a few seconds, comes back to my prompt. It's like the child shell
process isn't being allowed to use the pty or something.

These two problems have me spooked, and I'm moving back to 2.4.3 soon.
If anybody has suggestions, or requests for info, please email me.

Thanks,

2.4.4 bug report, non-member post

2001-04-30 Thread Eric M. Hopper

I'm using a brand-new 2.4.4 kernel without devfs. If you need to know
some option I turned off or on while compiling, email me and I'll tell
you. I did use 'kgcc' (egcs-2.91.66) from RH 7.0.

I mounted an MSDOS floppy image using the 'vfat' filesystem through the
loopback device, and every program which tried to access files on this
filesystem was promptly killed, and this message appear in the kernel
logs:
