In short, it boots existing mainline Linux v6.5-rc1, given the right DTB,
which is in the patch series above. U-Boot support is work in progress.
For now you could use the firmware binary from one of the official images, 
that's actually not too bad (because based on just two year old 
mainline, and without too many custom hacks, it seems).

"Freshly built" doesn't mean it's fresh software. On the SPI flash I 
found some kernel 4.9.170 (4.9 is out of LTS support for a while now), 
compiled with GCC 5.3 in a 2016 build.

In general I would disregard any official software offering, and just 
focus on fixing problems in mainline, and supporting more hardware.
For instance graphics support is missing from H616, even though patches
for the display engine, HDMI, and the GPU are floating around. Same goes
for DVFS, so defining voltage/frequency pairs for the CPU.
