HP scanners on Linux.

2003-08-29 Thread Bill Campbell
I'm getting a bit frustrated with HP after recommending that one ouf our
customers buy an HP scanner for use with their SuSE 8.2 system. They
bought a ScanJet 3670 which is seen by the kernel, but sane doesn't seem to
recognize (sane-find-scanner says it might be a scanner, but that's as far
as it goes). I then built the LatestGreatest version of the sane software
in hopes that would solve the problem, but no joy there either.

I sent an e-mail question to HP asking whether this scanner is supported,
and they said no, but to check http://linux.hp.com for information on
supported scanners. Nothing there of any use. Another e-mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] asking for a list of current HP
scanners that _ARE_ supported, and they just sent me off to the sane web
sites again. Another e-mail to them pointing out that HP is supposedly
promoting Linux, sells hardware that should be useful on Linux systems, and
could they please just send me a list of current scanners supported by
sane. The reply I got that basically said bugger off, we don't support
scanners on Linux. My reply was mostly polite, saying that I could see no
reason to use any HP products in the future given the attitude of their
support folks.

That said, can anybody recommend current scanners that are well supported
under Linux? My current need is for a pretty vanilla flat bed scanner, but
we will also need ones with automatic document feeders.

I bought an Epson Perfection 1660 Photo abought a year ago (after
consulting the linux - supported listings), and it worked flawlessly
after getting the correct sane backend. I haven't used it in a while
(it's now hanging off my wife's WinXP machine), but I would recommend it
or anything Epson that is supported.

EPSON. I have an EPSON Perfection 640U and works great! They even have
an epson closed source driver :)

Ted, Collins:

May I quote you in my correspondance to HP?

I just got a reply to my last e-mail saying:
``Although this service is provided as a means of technical support for
our customers, we appreciate any feedback about our company's products
and services. The e-mail message you sent has been reviewed and
forwarded to the proper individuals. We value your comments.''

It so happens that I'm typing this an an HP Visualize P-Class running SuSE
8.2 which is standing next to another HP Visualize P550, right beside my HP
4M Plus with duplex attachment. I think that qualifies me as a customer
(not to mention the HP printers, print servers, etc. which I've sold or
installed over the last 20 years or so :-).

Ditto, I'd recommend Epson scanners without hesitation. Anyone that has
bought one for use with linux on my recomendation are pleased as all
heck with them. I gave an HP scanner away to my niece (she runs winxp)
no matter what I tried I got absolutely nowhere. HP support was a joke
and by sounds of it, is still a joke. Too many years sucking on M$ I'm sure.

The P-Class (dual PIII 1GHZ) machine is prone to random lockups where the
only way to get control is via the power switch. I haven't worried much
about that though since it's main use is as my desktop mule and test system
with everything important on our primary file server.

I can't complain at all about the 4M plus as it's been our work horse
printer for over eight years now.

Take a look at the Epson 1650/1660 or 2400/2450 scanners.
The SANE version provided with Libranet 2.8 (1.0.10-1) supports them
directly, which is just as well since the latest
Epson backend seems to have problems. NBD since xsane works perfectly,
including turning on the slide backlighting.
Note: do not consider the Epson 1670, which is not supported.

I just bailed out of an HP 800MZ machine for the same reasons - random
lockups. HP machines are the complete POS. Replaced it with a brand X
Celeron from my neighborhood dealer, and now the problem is gone. I do
have an HP100 laserjet which works fine, but the toner cartridges wear
out way too often, so I think I've bought my last HP unit. Besides,
they'll probably be using COMPAQ units now - also POS.

An afterthought. I believe the problem with the HP PCs is overheating.
HP uses the crappiest case design that I've yet encountered.

I'm coming in late to this party but I, also, would like to add my vote for
Epson. After using an HP 4C for several years, it went TU and HP's only
response was that they were sorry and I would have to buy a new one. After
surveying the market and checking SANE supported devices:
http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-mfgs.html#EPSON
I chose an Epson Expression 1680 and have not had a moments trouble.
