I'm really wondering how you manage to fill up /boot, when its contents are
static. I don't see why you need to increase the size of /boot in the
first place.

Boot shouldn't change much and certainly the size of boot shouldn't be

I am sorry , i can't say how it is inceasing but this

while checking i found that /boot is almost 99% full -
while comparing the other servers i found it is not ok

Swapana,
Each time you upgrade with up2date and the kernal is updated you add files to
boot. Clean up the old kernals and you will once again have the space you
need. Remember to make lilo or grub relect the changes.

it is only 21mb..

That only shows current disk usage, you need to find out how much
unallocated space is left. (df and du only shows allocated space)
Try fdisk -l /dev/hdX or sdX where X is the disk and look for free

Re: how to increase /root space

2003-08-30 Thread Mike Reinehr
There's your trouble. You have the files associated with five (5) different
kernels in your boot partition:

  2.4.9
  2.4.7-10
  2.4.18-19.7.x
  2.4.18-24.7.x
  2.4.18-26.7.x
  2.4.18-27.7.x

It appears that 2.4.18-27.7.x is the last and current kernel, the one you are
booting. It that's the case you can free up a lot of space by deleting the
unused kernel image files. (Just make sure that your lilo or grub
configurations reflect the correct kernel image or you won't be able to
reboot.)

cmr

PS These lists would be a lot easier to read if you would set your margins a
little wider to minimize the line wrapping.

Is this the same network that you had the earlier

 possible security

 problems on?

No it is our servers' network. Previously was of our
client's that is under different network...

Boot shouldn't change much and certainly the size of

 boot shouldn't be

changing unless there are some very strange things

 going on.I'd be very

concerned about why boot was growing, who was

 causing it to grow (if

it's not you) and what the additional bulk consists

 of.

We are only upgrading the kernel occassionally with
 up2date . I have given above the /boot directory
 listing,,,

pl. guide me where i am making mistakesMoreover
also suggest me how we can increase its disk space ,
 it is only 21mb..

how to increase /root space

2003-08-30 Thread Swapana Ghosh
Hi

Try fdisk -l /dev/hdX or sdX where X is the disk
and look for free
space. df -h gives easier to read info:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] boot]# df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda7 494M 210M 258M 45% /
/dev/sda3 23M 22M 283k 99% /boot
none 630M 0 629M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda9 61M 5.0M 52M 9% /tmp
/dev/sda5 40G 8.4G 29G 22% /usr

/dev/sda21011M 823M 137M 86% /home

[EMAIL PROTECTED] boot]# fdisk -l /dev/sda3

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

 Device BootStart EndBlocks Id

What's the output of mount|column -tx? It will
show the filesystem type.

There's your trouble. You have the files associated with five (5) different
 kernels in your boot partition:

   2.4.9
   2.4.7-10

   2.4.18-24.7.x
   2.4.18-26.7.x
   2.4.18-27.7.x

It appears that 2.4.18-27.7.x is the last and current kernel, the one you
are booting. It that's the case you can free up a lot of space by deleting
the unused kernel image files. (Just make sure that your lilo or grub
configurations reflect the correct kernel image or you won't be able to
 reboot.)

Since he installed all these kernels via up2date (and consequently, rpm), he
shouldn't just start rm'ing things. If he uses rpm to remove them, via 'rpm
-e', rpm should take care of the necessary grub (or lilo, if RHL 7.x uses
that instead of grub) modifications.

Don't add the partition number, (3) just do fdisk -l /dev/sda. If there
is no free space listed, then you have one of 2 choices.
1. Backup, resize, and restore
2. Remove the old kernel RPM's as suggested.
Number 2 is *highly* recommended unless you need an excuse to test your
backup methodology.
| [EMAIL PROTECTED] boot]# mount|column -tx
[...]
| /dev/sda2 on /home type ext3 (rw)
Everything is ext3. I don't know if you can grow it or not. Another
reason why I don't ext3. (there used to be resize2fs for ext2 but I
don't know about ext3)

21MB is huge for /boot. One of my boxes has a 21MB /boot partition that is
nearly empty:
/dev/hda2 21M 6.2M 14M 31% /boot
