[WSG] Using em's as unit measure

2007-01-08 Thread Martyn Clark

Hi
I have a div element with just a few words of text directly in the div, I
have applied padding using em's but when I view this in IE and Firefox IE
seems to make the element larger than it appears in Firefox.

If I put an equal amount of padding all round the div element in Firefox
this places the text to be aligned in the centre of the div, while in IE the
text seems lower down and the div appears a lot larger. Can anybody shed
some light on this?

Kind regards Martyn

2007-01-08 Thread Jan Brasna
'Morgen,

My hardline semantics reply would be...

 Math (a2), square units (km2),
 Should be MathML?
 chemistry formulas (Na2CO3) ...
 ChemML?

I exactly know your reason for putting it this way, but (and the same
goes for modularity) it does not serve the common needs (read: a
straightforward use without a heavy overhead stuff) of marking up the
simple construction used just for a common unit. (I know you use the
form of sqm and mph but we have solely m^2 and kmh^-1). I'm not
talking scientific stuff, weird formulas or equations. Speaking of which
.. the numbers 0-9 should be available in Unicode in both subscript and
superscript if I'm not mistaken, so it should cover this basic usage.

 we're thinking XHTML 2.0 for a second

That's what I tried not to do. The reason? When I hear XHTML2 two things
pop up in my mind ... W3C and IE, I don't quite know which one is more
distant from the ideas of HTML and web at all. Honestly, it gets weary
to think in the theoretical field over and over after some time. And you
know what I mean, I'd like to see it in real ... once. Or see my kids
working with it / using it at some point ;)

Theoretically, would you like it more if it were called
 indexsomething /?
 Possibly, yes.

That was what I thought - the element serves its purpose ... at least to
some extent; it's only stupidly called and treated ;)

(Take it with a grain of salt, as always.)

No, many aspects of accessibility cannot be programatically tested

There is no 'tool' for checking accessibility, it's something that has to be
done manually, as there are too many requirements that need a common sense
interpretation. Bobby/Watchfire does some of the bits that can be automated,
though.

You may find the Total Validator useful aswell:

But as others have said - a majority of checks need to be done by a
real, live, person (or preferably persons), rather than a machine, but
running validators is a good start!

[WSG] Image markup clarification

Happy New Year Group,

Could someone please clarify for me the best way to markup an image in a
template, take a header image for example. In the interest of keeping
structure from content I have recently been using background images wherever
possible to keep my markup as clean as possible but I have been reading an
article on the importance of the alt text for SEO.

Is there a definitive answer?

I want the best search engine rankings but I also want clean markup.

Does the image convey information? Then it should be an img with alt
text.

Is the image purely presentational? Then its a toss-up between
background image and img with an empty alt attribute.

Background images, not being IMG elements, can't have ALT attributes,
so that part's easy. If you've decided that an image is truly decor
and doesn't need to be a foreground image, it also doesn't need (and
can't have) alt text.

Determining which images are decor and which are truly content can be
difficult at times as there can be lots of grey area. One could
argue that if the image is not necessary to understanding the page
content, it's decor. It helps if you turn images off in your browser
and see if the integrity of the page suffers as a result.

The correct markup will depend on whether you're using HTML or
XHTML. For XHTML it's:

img src=x alt=xx /

Other attributes are available; see:

HTML 4.01 Specification
13 Objects, Images, and Applets
13.2 Including an image: the IMG element
http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/objects.html#edef-IMG

Re: [WSG] Image markup clarification

2007-01-08 Thread John S. Britsios

Robin,

since you are using background images, I assume that the images are
meaningless, and only for decoration reasons.

Therefore you do not need alt attributes there. It is true that alt
attributes are a little piece of the search engines algorithms,
which can boost a bit your rankings, but they are not there for stuffing
with keywords.

And for the minimal boosting, it is not worth to spoil your clean code.
That is a fact!

Work on more important on-site and off-site factors for achieving higher
rankings.

The golden rule in SEO is: Optimize for engines, with humans in mind!

Best,

John

You may find the Total Validator useful aswell:

But as others have said - a majority of checks need to be done by a
real, live, person (or preferably persons), rather than a machine, but
running validators is a good start!

There is no 'tool' for checking accessibility, it's something that has to be
done manually, as there are too many requirements that need a common sense
interpretation. Bobby/Watchfire does some of the bits that can be automated,
though.

Pay an expert (or become one yourself). Email me off list if you want
a recommendation, I won't spam the group with it. The RNIB is also
likely to be able to make some suggestions.

I have done a standard HTML and CSS validation so I can be 100%
before advertising the fact in my footer etc. But is there a 1 click
Y/N tester for accessibility that works in the same way as the W3
 site checker for validity??

No, many aspects of accessibility cannot be programatically tested
for. You need some degree of human intervention.

Yes, here's an article with a table of affected screen readers (scroll
down to the table)

Joe Clark seems to claim that Jaws does read it.
