RE: [WSG] html validation: exactly what is it good for?

2006-07-09 Thread Raymond Sonoff

Shlomi,

SCSI'S PERSPECTIVE ON QUESTIONING AUTHORITY:
I appreciate your courage at sticking your neck out to ask what may appear
to many to be very basic questions. Why? Because such questions often prove
to be the ones that should be thought about most deeply before any
authority should reply to them. After all, this is intended to be a
discussion -- not a do as I do or say -- group forum, isn't it?

With that said, I'm sure the intent is always to inform, but we must all be
careful not to discourage another person's inquisitiveness, desire to learn
more, and willingness to be pointed in new and interesting directions as a
result of asking a question in the first place.

A THOUGHT-PROVOKING QUOTATION:
One of my favorite quotations might serve us all well here --- referring to
your ... that's why I question authority... statement.
Here it is ...
In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the
humble reasoning of a single individual. -- Galileo

For me, in this particular instance, Web standards and recommendations
represent the science that is being called into question, Scsi's
Productivity and Knowledge Transfer Web site's design and implementation
represent the humble reasoning of a single individual.

PUTTING THINGS TO THE TEST:
Galileo Galilei put things to the test, questioned the writings and
teachings of Aristotle, and persisted in his search for the truth in spite
of all the naysayers back then in the 17th century.

Coming now to the 21st century, I offer to all the experimental results of
Scsi's humble reasoning in applying Web standards and recommendations for
one and all to evaluate and draw conclusions as to the its value to others.

Visit URL address http://sonoffconsulting.com/ to see a first-pass solution
for Ubiquitous Web Access and put its Web pages to the test for validation
and accessibility, hopefully learning (and questioning, of course).

BACK TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION, WHY VALIDATE?
Finally, as to assisting you toward answering your original question, you
might wish to access Scsi WebKISS(tm) Guide #1: Why Validate Your Web
Site's Pages? at URL address
http://sonoffconsulting.com/filters/web_kiss_guides/scsi_pkt_why_val_web_sit
e.html for my perspective on this matter.

CLOSING COMMENTS:
Good luck, keep questioning authority, and do continue to have the courage
of your convictions as you climb the ladder of learning. It will serve you
well.

RE: [WSG] Through PDA

2006-06-06 Thread Raymond Sonoff
To any WSG members who could use some Web standards-compliant Web sites can
and do work successfully:

Don't be discouraged with what you may have so far encountered, namely,
rather poor representations of Web site pages, particularly on small screen
rendering devices such as Portable Digital Assistants and SmartPhones.
No doubt that the design and implementation challenge is ever-present, but
do keep in mind that to achieve noteworthy improvements in anything
worthwhile it takes time for Web site designers to put forth the effort to
learn about and to address both accessibility and usability issues.

With that said, I'd like to suggest that you visit Sonoff Consulting
Services, Inc.'s (Scsi's) Productivity and Knowledge Transfer (PKT) Web
site at http://sonoffconsulting.com/ and (as an earlier e-mail that I
submitted to the WSG suggested) put it through the wringer to confirm that
it is a first-pass solution to Ubiquitous Web Access that is intended to
serve as a working model for a World Class Level Web site.

As for making it easy to perform validation testing of the entire site's Web
pages, Scsi provides three hyperlinks on every page that readily allow for
validation testing for full conformance to the W3C's XHTML 1.0 Strict,
screen medium cascading style sheet (CSS), and WCAG Accessibility
(Priorities 1, 2, and 3, inclusive) recommendations. How easy is it to do?
Well, three of the 36 pre-defined access keys associated with the
sonoffconsulting.com domain will launch the respective tests.

For the example of a Microsoft Operating System and Internet Explorer Web
browser, in combination with the 'Alt' key, you would make use of the 'left
bracket' key, the 'equal sign' key, and the 'right bracket' key to launch
these tests for any Web page you are currently viewing.

Keep up your spirits and put forth the effort, and you will succeed.

Good luck and have fun while learning-by-doing.

RE: [WSG] Accessibility standards - for commercial consumption

2006-06-01 Thread Raymond Sonoff

Since the request for finding working resources for how to achieve
accessibility has been made, I am making my first-ever contribution to the
WSG with the intent to 'throw my white hat' into the ring for one and all to
examine, critique, and to learn by example --- especially without having
to make any CSS hacks whatsoever --- and see what my four-year effort has
encompassed toward achieving 100% Web accessibility and Web usability, all
while conforming to W3C's xHTML 1.0 Strict, CSS, and WCAG Priority Levels 1,
2, and 3, inclusive recommendations on each and every page within the
sonoffconsulting.com domain.

What do you need to do? Just visit Sonoff Consulting Services, Inc.'s
(Scsi's) Productivity and Knowledge Transfer (PKT) Web site at URL address
http://sonoffconsulting.com and put it to the test for its stated claim of
being a first-pass solution toward achieving Ubiquitous Web Access.

This Web site design is based on Scsi's Perfect 10 Web Site Standard --
see http://sonoffconsulting.com/unique_features.html for details -- with its
underlying set of ten Best Practices -- see
http://sonoffconsulting.com/unique_features_part2.html for details -- that
every World Class Level (read: 100% accessibility, ideally) Web sites
should strive to provide its visitors/prospects/customers/users.

I am providing below Scsi's Working Definition of the above statements as
copied directly from the Home page.
---
Scsi's Working Definition of Universal Web Accessibility and Web Usability =
World Class Level Web Sites Anyone, anywhere, using any Internet-enabled
device, any operating system, and any (Web- or text mode-based) browser
should be enabled - by the Web site personnel's adherence to judicious
design principles and Best Practices - to accomplish basic tasks, including
the following:

Readily access any Web page within the Web site's domain Easily navigate
(regardless of the navigation tool chosen, e.g., keyboard, mouse, or other
pointing device) within and among its Web pages Display any Web page's
contents without imposing any restrictions on the user as to screen
resolution or viewing window size All of these benefits are manifested
throughout the always-and-ever productivity-focused sonoffconsulting.com
domain.

Scsi's PKT Web site is clearly focused on serving as an exemplary working
model that clearly and convincingly demonstrates what The Ubiquitous Web
Domain describes as a goal to strive to reach.

Hopefully, you will end up agreeing that Scsi has carried this Web site
development effort to the point of achieving at least a first-pass
Ubiquitous Web Access solution that is available here and now, is based on
existing mature technologies, employs a from-the-ground-up Web
standards-based design architecture and relevant methodologies, and retains
an emphasis on simplicity over complexity at all times.

SPECIAL NOTE: For the purists who feel that a Web site must be wholly
CSS-based, I currently consider my approach involving 'minimalistic Tables'
that do support linearization when disabled as a viable solution for the
near-term at the very least.

Hopefully, the readers of this e-mail will learn by example first by
putting everything stated to the test and by simply doing a View Source
operation to see the various sections of source code that together comprise
each and every Web page within the sonoffconsulting.com domain.

Have fun and good luck to everyone who takes the time to perform this
exercise for themselves.

Dive Into Accessibility and WebAIM do provide something like this, although
