So how about I volunteer to manage the google groups? I am already managing the
one for my user group, and it takes five minutes to set up. It is not error
free, but I never had the problems I have been having with the current ozmoss
listserv...
We can set up two groups – [EMAIL PROTECTED]mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED]mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] or more as needed – different
people can maintain each one, and different people can subscribe to different
ones. The OzMoss.com web site could link to joining the groups.

I actually like this idea of a dev / I.T pro list, But I’d like to see it under
the OzMOSS title. i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED]mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL
PROTECTED]mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] or something.
But as this list is not controlled by any of us, it’s up to the management of
the list to fix out these issues and move forward. It’s a volunteer effort.

Maybe a Designer-focused group could also be created? This list has always had
a strong developer bent.

Many posts of late have been design oriented and I can see how it might be
starting to get on the teats of some of the more caffeine-inclined, purist

[OzMOSS] RE: Subsite directory structure

2008-10-19 Thread Brian Farnhill
I'm not sure about the master pages not being selectable in the UI, but you can
certainly set the master page to be in a sub-sites _catalogs/masterpage
directory through code at least. An example of this is the OOTB meeting
workspace, it uses its own master page that gets deployed to each individual
meeting workspace.

Something I've been wondering but can't find an answer to.

Can anyone explain why subsites (not site collections) have a _catalogs
directory which appears distinct from the root site but can't actually be used?

Scenario: You can create new master pages and store them in the masterpage
directory but they cannot be applied to the site through Site Settings.

I know the approved method for this is to store them all in the root site but
I'm stumped as to why there is a _catalogs directory for subsites in the first
place.

Just wondering. :)

RE: [OzMOSS] Setting Library View Programmatically

2008-08-27 Thread Brian Farnhill
It is possible to create views from code. There are a few ways of going about
it but basically you create the SPView object and then add it to the Views
collection of each document library. I'm pretty sure you could create the view
in one spot and then use code to copy it around (I don't think there would be
any issues as long as each document library had the required columns for the
view).

You can add any of the fields to a view based on their internal name. For
example, the internal name of the field for the documents icon is DocIcon and
the correct field to use for the title field with the edit menu is
LinkFilename.

If you are unsure what the internal name of a field is that you want to use a
view, you can try this - build the view in SharePoint and then go to the
'modify this view' page. Then with the IE Dev Toolbar (or firebug if you are a
fix fox user) select the check box for the field you need the internal name of.
You will see that it has an onclick attribute that will look like this
javascript:ShowHideTotals(this, 'LinkFilename'). The internal name for the
field the checkbox corresponds to is the second parameter in the JavaScript
function.

I hope that helps

Hi All,

In a feature event receiver I am trying to create some views for a particular
list as per this code:

//Ordered by Reference number
SPViewCollection views = spLibrary.Views;
StringCollection libViewFields = new StringCollection();

libViewFields.Add(File_x0020_Type);
libViewFields.Add(Reference_x0020_Number);
libViewFields.Add(Modified);
libViewFields.Add(Item_x0020_Author);
libViewFields.Add(Item_x0020_Title);
libViewFields.Add(FileLeafRef);
libViewFields.Add(Group1);

qry = OrderByFieldRef Name='Reference_x0020_Number' Ascending='True'
//OrderBy;
libViews.Add(Ordered by Reference Number, libViewFields, qry, 100, true,
false);

spLibrary.Update();

This is all working fine, but I would really like to add the File Type column
so that it shows an icon for the file type, and the name (FileLeafRef) column
so that it has the dropdown edit menu. Anybody have any idea how to create
these view fields programatically

RE: [OzMOSS] Setting Library View Programmatically

2008-08-27 Thread Brian Farnhill
Well you would need to do it in code somewhere, so that really depends on what
your preference is - you could easily put together a windows application that
would do this.

To copy the view around your code would basically be finding the view object
from the source document library and then add it to each other document
library. So for example, to get the view use something like this:

SPList sourceDocumentLibrary; // I'm assuming this already exists - get the
list from the appropriate place though
SPView newView = sourceDocumentLibrary.Views[My View Name];

And then to add it get the new library as an SPList object and parse the
properties of the newView object into the SPList.Views.Add() method.

That should get you started in the right direction.

[OzMOSS] RE: Site Directory categories

2008-08-05 Thread Brian Farnhill
Hi Paul,

I believe (and I haven't done too much with site directory so I could be wrong)
the site directory is just a list called 'Sites' in the Site Directory site, if
you go to that site you should see all of the sites in that list, with their
categories set as metadata. Update the item there and you should be set.

The Add Link to site page just adds an item to this list. Normally sites are
added to the list when the site is created.

Subject: [OzMOSS] Recommended/Essential Software for SharePoint

Hiya,

I've got some great news: Today I handed in my resignation letter to my
manager. It was a long time coming (considering that no attempt was made to
update my job description or pay reflecting MOSS technology!!), so I have been
job hunting and have got a job as a SharePoint Consultant in Reading, UK.

One thing I would like to do is recommend software for the company to have in
hand before I start. Part of my work will involve some architecture/planning
work. Software that I have worked with and love is Mindjet (mind manager) and
the usual Office applications.

Is there anything else that I can recommend as a really good tool to aid me to
completely redesign and help develop SharePoint sites please?

Many thanks - Will hope to set up a blog of my own soon!!

RE: [OzMOSS] Ajax webpart - please help

2008-08-04 Thread Brian Farnhill
Hi,

I recently worked on an ASP.NET control that had an update panel in it and we
put the control into a custom field type in MOSS. The code I used was similar
to what you have, with a couple of exceptions:

* In the OnInit event of the control is where I create the button and
wire up the event, not in CreateChildControls

* In CreateChildControls I add the script manager like this:

ScriptManager sm;
if (ScriptManager.GetCurrent(this.Page) != null)
{
sm = ScriptManager.GetCurrent(this.Page);
}
else
{
sm = new ScriptManager();
Controls.Add(sm);
}

I don't add the ScriptManager to the master pages controls, I just slip it onto
the page when I create the other child controls and this seems to work fine

I think you will find that if you move the code that wires up your event to the
OnInit event it will help. The CreateChildControls method will actually run on
every post back (I'm pretty sure anyway, I can't remember exactly), but your
event needs to be wired up before that happens which is why you are seeing
CreateChildControls running instead of you button click handler - what actually
should be happening is they should both run

Subject: [OzMOSS] Ajax webpart - please help

Hi,

I am trying to create a simple ajax webpart, however all the Microsoft
sugguestions seem to be failing.

I have installed Ajax and updated the web.config.

The issue is with the scriptmanager. When I run the sample code below I get the
following exception when adding the scripmanager to the masterpage

The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load,
PreRender or Unload phases.

 If I use the following code rather than Page.Master.Page.Controls.AddAt(1,
scriptManager), I don't get an exception, but when the user clicks the button,
CreateChildControls is called rather than HandleButtonClick

if (ScriptManager.GetCurrent(this.Page) == null)
{
ScriptManager Manager = new ScriptManager();
Manager.EnablePartialRendering = true;
this.Controls.AddAt(0, Manager);
}

Could somone please help. I would rather add the scriptmanager dynamically if
possible.

THANKS.

SAMPLE CODE

 private Label label;
private TextBox textBox;
private ScriptManager scriptManager;
protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e)
{
base.OnInit(e);
// Let's find if the ScriptManager exists and add it if not
scriptManager = ScriptManager.GetCurrent(Page);
if (scriptManager == null)
{
scriptManager = new ScriptManager();
if (Page.Form != null)
{
   Page.Master.Page.Controls.AddAt(1, scriptManager)
}
}
}

protected override void CreateChildControls()
{
base.CreateChildControls();
this.EnsureUpdatePanelFixups();
UpdatePanel up = new UpdatePanel();
up.ID = UpdatePanel1;
up.ChildrenAsTriggers = true;
up.UpdateMode = UpdatePanelUpdateMode.Conditional;
this.Controls.AddAt(1, up);
this.textBox = new TextBox();
this.textBox.IDhttp://this.textBox.ID = TextBox;
up.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(this.textBox);
this.label = new Label();
this.label.Text = Enter your name.;
up.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(this.label);
LinkButton button = new LinkButton();
button.Text = Say Hello;
button.ID = HelloButton; // Some controls need an ID to make
them work with AJAX postbacks.
button.Click += new EventHandler(HandleButtonClick);
up.ContentTemplateContainer.Controls.Add(button);
}
private void HandleButtonClick(object sender, EventArgs eventArgs)

RE: [OzMOSS] RE: Structuring Data in MOSS

2008-07-30 Thread Brian Farnhill
Sort of, you certainly could do it that way, but I think it would be less
flexible and harder to maintain. If you did it that way every time you added a
new contact you would then need to go back to the suppliers list and add them
to the appropriate supplier.

If you add the lookup column to the contacts list, when you add a contact to
the list you specify what supplier they are for at the same time as the rest of
the data. Then you also have the ability to create views that use the supplier
field on the contacts list (All contacts grouped by supplier, all the contacts
for supplier X, All contacts in state X grouped by supplier, etc).

That's what I was thinking, separating the data entities and creating a list
for each entity and then linking them together.
Basically the same as designing tables but only using lists and content types
instead.

Suppliers List has lookup field to Supplier Contacts List with multiple
selections allowed.

Does that sound right?

In my opinion it depends on how you are going to use the data once you have
recorded it. Think about what the requirements are for how you plan to use the
data and that should help you figure out how you should store it.

If you want it is possible to break it up into different lists, one that has
the suppliers, and one that has all the contacts and this list could have a
look up field back to the supplier list to identify what supplier they are tied
to. Then you could filter the contacts list per supplier to see a list of all
contacts for a supplier, or show them grouped by supplier, or see all the
contacts for all suppliers in each state (if you have a field for state), etc
etc etc.

Subject: [OzMOSS] Structuring Data in MOSS

Hi Everyone

This is just a question of best practices a guess...

If I have data like supplier information which I need to capture in MOSS,
do I use normal database design principles to outline the columns and types
within MOSS or
do I just add the required fields into one list or content type?

Example:
A supplier has name, telno, address ect.
But also has Contacts associated to them.

With normal database design you will separate the two because it has a one to
many relationship between suppliers and supplier contacts.
But in MOSS you may add these contacts with their detail in one multi line
field within the list or content type.

Is there any article or blog that discusses this? My personal opinion is to go
with the traditional database design principles.

I would really want to know what's been done out there.

Regards
Arno
