Re: [OSGeoLive] OSGeoLive would prefer not to be listed as a Community project

2018-01-22 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Jody,

the OSGeo wiki states:

"The purpose of OSGeo Community Projects is to provide a home at OSGeo
for projects that don't qualify for our normal incubation process."

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/OSGeo_Community_Projects

I do not know if this is up to date or reflects current OSGeo usage.
OSGeoLive is currently in incubation, which seems to be inconsistent
with community status as defined on the wiki.

Kind regards,
Ben.

But to be clear, we, the osgeolive project would prefer not to be listed.

 From IRC logs:

CameronShorter: +0, I’d prefer not to have community status associated
with OSGeoLive. To me it sets a level of expectation that OSGeoLive is
less mature than it is, and also suggests that other projects with the
community badge are as mature as OSGeoLive, which I think is not the
right message to push

Vicky,

I have recreated the Trac home page:
https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/

Sorry, I removed the wordle you added because it was too big and I
wanted the links above the fold. This is the service entrance so need
not be pretty.

I also noticed that our SourceForge project is still called "OSGeo Live"
with a space, its home page still contains "osgeo-live" with a hyphen
<https://sourceforge.net/projects/osgeo-live/>, and the descriptive text
still uses OSGeo-Live. I think now would be a good time to break
incoming links. Does SourceForge allow project renaming? Who has admin
access?

So I'm putting a motion forward to set up an OSGeo-Live translators

    Dear OSGeo-Live contributors,

As you might know, we are working on translating OSGeo-Live
    Documentation using the Transifex Platform.

We choose that in order to provide a better translation
experience than the old .rst files and git one.
It will help us doc building process of course, but we also add
machine translation capabilities (thanks to ) to
    help translators.

It adds a review part too, that was sometimes not possible with
the old system (when the merger didn't speak the language), so it
will help us provide better quality documentation.

All that said, the platform is online [1], ready to test. So we
need early translators to battle test it with several languages,
    writing systems and such.

We are in the moment where we can start testing the
infrastructure and our first draft of the translator guide [2].
For testing the infrastructure, translated files are needed, you
can translate based on the priority mark, or on the amount of
lines to be translated, or complete a translation that someone
else started, or start with your project. Note that we already
marked files that don't need translation.
Some feedback about the guide is 100% useful. (probably the guide
is more for a reviewer than for a translator)

If the images below don't show in your mail, they are included in
    our translator guide [2]

Re: [Live-demo] Open Vote: OSGeo Live Logo

2017-10-10 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Luca,

I like the current size of the triangle (as submitted by Alex) because
it makes the emblem distinctive even at small sizes. Do you have an
example of how much smaller you would like it? If so, please attach it
to the trac ticket.

I do not see any other examples of multiple colours in one word in the
style guide:

https://github.com/OSGeo/osgeo/blob/master/marketing/branding/styleguide-osgeo.pdf

See for example the proposed GeoForAll logo on page 5. One possibility
is to use dark green for "Live"; this breaks the colour alternation but
is consistent with the Local Chapter (Alternatives) examples on page 6.
We could insert a dot or hyphen in light green, to restore the colour
alternation and match the style of the Local Chapter (Alternatives)
examples. The dark green is stronger in my view.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Re: [Live-demo] 11.0 background image proposals

2017-07-11 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies
I like [5] the best, but would also be happy with [3]. In my view, we
cannot have "11.0" without "Live". I think the unfaded logo in the lower
right has better visibility. I would like to see the new OSGeo logo used
wherever possible, even if I disagree with the "Live" version with the
heart and new font.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Some comments:
I see that options [3] [4] and [5] use a new logo for OSGeo-Live. At the
same time we have a motion to revert this logo in the docs... this is a
conflict, we need to make our minds about this. If we remove the new
OSGeo-Live logo from docs, we cannot use it for the desktop.
On the other hand, it feels awkward to have just a version number (11.0)
next to the OSGeo logo as options [1] and [2] do.

It is a tough decision for me...

A minor comment: I would prefer the number 11.0 to be similar to the
text size of "OS" since they also share the same color.

Reasons:

efficiently.

* We have improved build processes to be agile and efficient. However,
our final test process still has significant manual testing. In
particular around reviewing and updating documentation, and testing
quickstarts.

Not yet tested on physical hardware. The ISO should now work after
being written to a raw thumb drive with dd, just like the official
Ubuntu and Lubuntu ISO images.

All of these boot in QEMU:

QEMU test as "cdrom":
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -cdrom
osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso

QEMU test as MBR boot thumb drive (which boot as first hard disk):
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -hda
osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso ^C

QEMU test as UEFI boot thumb drive (OVMF Tianocore UEFI BIOS):
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -bios /usr/share/ovmf/OVMF.fd
-hda osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso

Re: [Live-demo] ISO not isohybrid, lacks UEFI support

2016-12-06 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Brian,

this fix simply added a new argument to genisoimage (mkisofs), plus an
isohybrid step. My concern was that there are some distributions of
genisoimage with good UEFI support (-e option) and some without; even my
Debian unstable machine lacks this option. Testing confirmed that the
Ubuntu/Lubuntu 16.04.1 version of genisoimage is a good one so I stuck
with the tool in use.

I have seen other projects using xorriso to make isohybrid ISO images
with UEFI support (for example Debian live-wrapper) so I knew we had a
another option. xorriso seems to be under much more active development
than any of the genisoimage forks. One xorriso developer helped a
project using xorriso before even being asked, so in my view, support is
great.

Kind regards,
Ben.

Re: [Live-demo] ISO not isohybrid, lacks UEFI support

2016-12-05 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Angelos,

I think I have a working solution:
https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/pull/142

Not yet tested on physical hardware. The ISO should now work after being
written to a raw thumb drive with dd, just like the official Ubuntu and
Lubuntu ISO images.

All of these boot in QEMU:

QEMU test as "cdrom":
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -cdrom
osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso

QEMU test as MBR boot thumb drive (which boot as first hard disk):
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -hda
osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso ^C

QEMU test as UEFI boot thumb drive (OVMF Tianocore UEFI BIOS):
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 2048 -bios /usr/share/ovmf/OVMF.fd
-hda osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso

Boot equipment looks good to me:

$ xorriso -indev osgeo-live-nightly-build6-amd64-ab426ef.iso

[Live-demo] Permissions problems with GeoServer

2016-12-05 Thread Ben Caradoc-Davies

Angelos,

even with my most recent fixes
<https://github.com/bencaradocdavies/OSGeoLive/tree/upgrade-geoserver>,
GeoServer on a nightly build will still not start.

Looks to me like permissions problems (files and directories in the data
directory whcih are owned by root). Likely culprit is
install_geonode.sh, which starts GeoServer as root "to update layers in
the geonode db", causing the creation of files and directories owned by
root:root. The solution (in install_geonode.sh) might be something like:

su -c "$GEOSERVER_PATH/bin/startup.sh" - user

but it will take a little fiddling to get this working with redirection
and running in the background. I will let you know when I have a fix.
