[LUAU] VNC for Mac OSx Lion?
Has anyone found a decent VNC client for OSx Lion yet? I'm hoping to avoid having to blow $50 on RealVNC and was hoping someone has found a decent free version. /brian chee -- University of Hawaii SOEST Advanced Network Computing Laboratory (ANCL) Brian Chee c...@hawaii.edu 2525 Correa Road, HIG 500 Honolulu, HI 96822 Office: 808-956-5797 ___ LUAU@lists.freesoftwarehawaii.org mailing list http://lists.freesoftwarehawaii.org/listinfo.cgi/luau-freesoftwarehawaii.org

Hi Brian! There is a new project called Chicken, that is based off of the abandoned Chicken of The VNC, that hasn't been update for about 6 years. Chicken works fairly well, and, more importantly, is active. Find it on sourceforge. Jollysfastvnc is probably the best VNC client, but is a pay app. Aloha, -Jeff On 09/21/2011 01:54 PM, Brian Chee wrote: Has anyone found a decent VNC client for OSx Lion yet? Thanks...wanted a free VNC client to test a VM of CentOS 5.7 under Hyper-Vif CLI only it's easy peezy...but there are two pieces of integration software if you want full performance with synthetic NICs and what looks like full HID support. All the pieces are free, but when I just did an update it kernel panic'd and I'm rolling back. Will try the updates without the kernel update and see if it still crashes. I think I can get this all working with CentOS 6, but I wanted to try the 5.5/5.7 version first to make sure I could get it working...Hyper-V and VMware only support RHEL and SUSE out of the box...same goes for Citrix. Dang, feeling like an orphan asking for moreguess it's time to bash on Microsoft, VMWare and Citrix about Linux HID support in a virtualized environment. /brian chee On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 2:04 PM, Jeff Mings je...@lava.net wrote: Hi Brian! [LUAU] Ok VNC newbie question...
Since this installation needs graphics, and we'd like to avoid needing to purchase X11 servers for all the students (VNC is at least free) AND the server is accessed through an SSL-VPN so I don't have to teach the students how to SSH tunnel at this time...drum roll please... Does anyone know of a procedure to kill the GUI login on the server (not needed anyway but I can live with it if that's a problem) but use VNC to get the regular CentOS gui login so that the students can run some Linux based visualization software in a graphical environment. In summary, I'd like to use VNC to connect to a server, prompt the user for their Linux username and password (Centos 5.7) and then get their appropriate desktop. Basically as if they're sitting at the physical machine. Got suggestions? I found this one specifically about SUSE ( http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2003-March/037862.html) but is there a better way to do this? /brian chee -- University of Hawaii SOEST Advanced Network Computing Laboratory (ANCL) Brian Chee c...@hawaii.edu 2525 Correa Road, HIG 500 Honolulu, HI 96822 Office: 808-956-5797 ___ LUAU@lists.freesoftwarehawaii.org mailing list http://lists.freesoftwarehawaii.org/listinfo.cgi/luau-freesoftwarehawaii.org

Hey Brian, This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but have you looked into using xrdp [1]? It's a windows remote desktop server for Linux and is pretty nice. The only thing I'm not sure about is the access through SSL-VPN. That's exactly what I want...now if I can only get RDP (I'm using CORD) to connectI just get a black screen...am reading the FAQ's now to see if I missed something. /brian chee On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 3:32 PM, Jason Axelson bostonvaul...@gmail.comwrote: In summary, I'd like to use VNC to connect to a server, prompt the user for their Linux username and password (Centos 5.7) and then get their appropriate desktop. Re: [LUAU] Ok VNC newbie question...
Yup...actually 99%, the only thing I have to fuss around with is the Hyper-V integration services...something is broken there since I can't issue a shutdown (ACPI style) from the Hyper-V console...which is a bad thing for autoshutdown in case of power failures, etc... /brian On Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 4:09 PM, Jason Axelson bostonvaul...@gmail.comwrote: Cool, I'm glad it's (mostly) working for you.
