For those who would like to help with bug triaging there is a session in
#ubuntu-classroom on irc.freenode.net, Basics of Bug Triaging, on Wed 15th
 December at 17:00 UTC.

Reporting bugs is also important.  If you feel this is complicated or are not
sure how to do a report, drop a mail to the list or call in to the IRC
channel #lubuntu on irc.freenode.net somebody will help, eventually, be
 patient.

You can also help with translations, even us English speakers.  Again, ask
the mailing list or IRC if you want to help.

Yorvyk,

What a timely post to the list. I was just reading
http://www.granneman.com/techinfo/linux/contributewithoutcoding.htm as
someone pasted a link in another Ubuntu channel. I am another one of
these people who took a LONG time to find my way into helping out
where I can even though I can't code or program anything to save my
life. I'd recommend people have a read of the link for some
inspiration if anyone is looking for something to do as a general tool
(it's far from Lubuntu specific but a lot of the ideas can be
transferred to the Lubuntu team).

While Yorvyk has put his hand up for bug triaging I would also like to
let people know I am available to help in the non-technical efforts
to anyone. I would recommend attending a bug triaging class even if
it's just to watch and get a better understanding how it all goes
together.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] proxy setup?

2010-12-13 Thread Zoltan Matlak
Installed Rabbit4.8 (a simple java proxy, which is really easy to use
by the way), and got it up and running in no time. Probably squid is
also easy to set up, I just did not have the time to try it. LXProxy
is not acceptable for me, since logging out and back again is not
something I would do for a proxy setting change.

Unfortunatelly in Chromium 8.0.552.215 (67652) Ubuntu 10.10, I can not
add proxy configuration to my browser. When I click on Change proxy
settings, I'm getting:

When running Chromium under a supported desktop environment, the
system proxy settings will be used. However, either your system is not
supported or there was a problem launching your system configuration.

But you can still configure via the command line. Please see man
chromium-browser for more information on flags and environment
variables.

This is too bad.

Is this also related to the fact that LXDE is a simple window
manager ? (bug related to the issue that Chromium can not determine
if it's default browser or not):
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=53066

Installed Midori and FF, both could be configured to use the above
mentioned proxy (in general, proxies could be added to these
browsers).

thanks
Zoltan

There is simply no other way around for setting a global proxy(someone correct
me if I am wrong). LXDE simply must reread the ~/.profile file for the proxy
settings to globally apply.
One alternative for you might be that you can start a terminal and execute
source ~/.profile right after a proxy change in lxproxy, which will then load
the proxy changes you made for this terminal window. So running chromium or
another app will use then the shortly changed proxy settings.

Chromium just uses the system proxy settings and doesn't have its own proxy
manager.

I think chromium simply looks for the gnome gconf entries and not the
freedesktop specification in xdg

Yes those browsers have their own proxy managers on board. But you cannot set
a global proxy for every app with them.

I’m obviously missing something, as I can’t see anything on that link about
this.
Besides it’s easy enough to do. Just create the appropriate .desktop files in
the Desktop folder. Personally, I see no worth or merit in desktop icons
anyway as I can’t see the desktop for applications when I’m using the computer.

Yes, I know, but most people (who came from Windows) would like to
see a (working) Trash and a "My PC" or something like that to
access. That's why Windows 7 was so cold for them, it showed an
empty desktop that confused a lot of users.

But I don't really know if that Slax trash works (changes its
status).

[Lubuntu-desktop] 1) Lubuntu with encrypted home + 2)LibreOffice Impress works!

2010-12-13 Thread Mårten Behm
1) I tried installing to my netbook, choosing encrypted home. That
didn't work out well, and my problems seem largely to match those
reported under the bug encrypted home-folder not unlocked when login
in Launchpad. I am not so good at deciphering the current situation with
this issue. Can someone help me? Is there a way of getting Ubuntu with
encrypted home at the moment?

2) I have previously posted about my problem to get subscripts display
properly in OpenOffice Impress under lxde + ubuntu which has caused me
to use the Fedora LXDE respin instead. I now tried LibreOffice RC1 in
Lubuntu and the problem is gone! So one reason to stay away from Lubuntu
is resolved.

Thank you and regards,

Mårten

But that still doesn’t explain the need for a Rubbish Bin icon on the desktop.
It all seems a bit OMGubuntu to me.

It's a known problem, hopefully, it should be fixed with the 10.10.1
Lubuntu release.
