Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Calling for a Team-Work :)

2011-10-17 Thread Ali Linx
Hello my friend and mentor and hope you don't mind to have a young crazy
brother :P

I think I should have been clear from beginning so there you go :)
I'm NOT planning to CHANGE any current scheme or system whatsoever. Why?
because, as you wrote, Roma wasn't built in one day. I just want to focus
on something that will give us another plus. Users are sometime complaining
why there is no sub-forum for lubuntu? why the support is so slow? etc etc.
You know these stuff, I'm sure :)
It's not that I want to prove to them how good we are; our actions speak
louder than our words but I just want our team, Lubuntu Team (family) to be
very much capable in everything and one thing specific: being fast. I know
what you'll say about that :D

I have no huge plan, it's a basic one. I'm currently working on:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/LXDE/21251244425
https://www.facebook.com/pages/lubuntu/105956559439428
http://forum.lxde.org/
and of course http://ubuntuforums.org

I have made some friends over Ubuntu Forum (I'm so fast in that by the way
:P) and I have asked them to team up with me and they agreed but as you
know, life issues could make everyone busy and away from Linux and I totally
understand that.
Having that said, I thought to find more people to pop up more on the above
4 websites/pages and support the users. That is preciously why I have
requested to be an admin on Lubuntu and LXDE FB Pages because for me, as a
user, I'd love to see someone from the team is interacting and posting, etc.
That will add more confident to them.

I already started some topics on LXDE Forum which is all about Lubuntu.
Two Guides so far, nothing much but also not bad :)
Two feedback topics
and willing to do more.

I'm SO MUCH happy with what I'm doing and because I'm just a member of this
family, I'd like to share my happiness with ALL of you.

Again, no big plans at the moment.

I'm aware of the tags and prefix. I use that when I do my search. I'm doing
my best to reply Lubuntu Threads on UF as much as possible. I also see some
other people who are not in our team but interested in Lubuntu and they are
helping too.

*Bottom Line:
*All what I'm asking for is: Let's focus our work and be more organized and
that will be done via some teams or even one team.

For example: It's 4am in my time and 3 threads are pending. I could send a
message to someone in the team who is online and he/she can pop up and help.

Phill, I'll definitely follow your instructions and advice and that's why
I'll log off now and go to eat :D

Thank you so much for everything ... I'm so much happy here and I'll be
around for a very long time hopefully :)

Who would give you hard time except me? :P

 Hi my young friend,

the system we have on the main ubuntu was granted to us (the tags) long,
long before we became official. I'm not too sure what you have in mind but I
prefer to use the main forum area with the ability to add and search tags as
 per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation#How_to_help
 Lubuntu
had some good friends even back then, we asked people to allow Lubuntu to
avoid the 'chicken and egg' syndrome. I know and I'm sure the others do, we
were shown every courtesy and assistance. Things that should only be done
for 'official' variants were done for Lubuntu.

I'll give you the instruction one of my trainers gave me. Do NOT burn out,
you are no use to us if you burn out and leave. Rome was not built in a day
Lubuntu has done very well from starting at about 9.04 to full acceptance
 at 11.10.

Take your time, but do ensure you eat and sleep!

One last email and I'm off. I did watch a movie for a change today though
 :P

Guys and girls, long story short. I was and still very active on Ubuntu
Forum. Now, Lubuntu became Official (YES!) and I'm sure more new threads
whether on Ubuntu Forum OR LXDE Forum (where I'm a moderator there) will be
created. I'm very much able to handle all that but I do confess and admit
that I don't know anything yet. My request is simple.

I need some people who already have an account on Ubuntu Forum to team up
with me. I'm planning for something. I'll hold it for now. I need to know
who is IN. I don't mind to be alone on this but you guys are my family and I
hate to do things alone, I do love team work. I told that to 4 new friends
 on IRC recently.

I'm on Google, and you have other links on my signature. Whatever way you
want to use to contact me, just do it.

I'll be waiting for your reply for a week. Take your time :)

Why is all that? it's because the more support users will find, the better
and the faster to fix any issue.

 I love you all ...

[Lubuntu-desktop] Rename LSC?

2011-10-17 Thread Glenn de Groot

Hello everyone,
today I came up with something.I think that if we rename Lubuntu Software
Center to LXDE Software Center or maybe something catchy, other distros and
developers will join.Other LXDE distro´s probably won´t switch to something
Lubuntu branded, which is a shame. We might have Openbox, XFCE and Fluxbox
joining if we come up with a catchy name, Midori isn´t named Gwebkit-browser
for a reason, I guess. :P

Hello Glenn,

I think that would be easier if Lubuntu is not yet an official variant of
Ubuntu. Now, it's an official variant, I think (NOT sure) we need to be as
close as possible to Canonical's Approaches and style but perhaps I'm wrong
:)

IMHO, what could be much better is having our own applications. I mean, LXDE
Applications. Instead of using GNOME or XFCE Power Management, we develop
our own application. Instead of using GNOME-Player, we create our own, etc.

As for other developers from other projects, I'm not that sure they will
involve themselves. As far as I know, everyone is busy with his/her own
project.

I'm trying to find some free time to come up with new ideas for LXDE but not
at the moment, I'm busy with too many things.

Thanks and keep it up :)

A more ambiguous name will make it more adaptable for others. Something like
Lightweight Software Center is indicative of it's nature without tying
it unnecessarily to Lubuntu or LXDE for that matter. But that is just my 2c.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Roadmap for Lubuntu 12.04

2011-10-17 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

We just released 11.10, but it also means that 12.04 development
started. It will be the first development cycle after adoption of
Lubuntu in Ubuntu family, which come with some consequences.

Firstly, we will have the same schedule than Ubuntu :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PreciseReleaseSchedule.

Secondly, we can use UDS to discuss plans for 12.04, new features etc
... I would like to use this summit to decide our roadmap for the 12.04,
and take decisions we usually took later in the cycle, like new
applications by default, new features planned etc ... But, I still want
to discuss the differents topics on the mailing before the UDS, to have
input from everyones. For the record, UDS starts the 31 October, and
finishes the 5 November.

Personally, I have 3 topics in mind, and I started to write some notes
about them on a wiki page :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Developers/P-Plan

1. Optimizations :
 * Remove unnecessary depends (gconf, glade, other gnome old library ?)
 * Evaluate a first move to GTK3 (because there will be less maintenance
/ optimization on GTK2 now)
 * Optimize the theme

2. User experience :
 * Add missing features easy to implement and which make our users happy :)
 * Provide new shiny stuff (lubuntu-software-center, catfish ...)
 * Fix issues which are here since too much time (keymap switch,
screensaver ...)

3. Team Organisation :
 * Find a way to organize and coordinate our work
 * Find a way to welcome new members / contributors

Also, an important detail is that Ubuntu 12.04 will be an LTS version,
but Lubuntu will NOT be an LTS. The main reason is because LTS needs
support, update and security fixes for 3 years, which is not possible
for Lubuntu team (too much work). However, it should not stop us to make
12.04 the better release Lubuntu ever :)

If you have any other topics to mention, please speak now :) It's the
perfect moment for asking and discussion. But please, open a new topic
on the mailing list, with [12.04] in the title, so it will be easier to
follow the discussions.

Regards,
Julien Lavergne

Were you hosting these directly on lubuntu.net or were they just pointers to

update the help area of our wiki. If the latter then I can get the wiki

Hi everyone on this list,
I just passed my license exam yesterday. So that means I will have a little
more free time from now on.
I, however, still have an important presentation this week and I have to
prepare for it.
Since next week, I guess I'll have some time for LXDE development.
It's time to fix some old bugs and adopt some patches.

I'm now thinking about future development.
Since dbus support is now part of glib and nowadays dbus is widely adopted,
maybe it's time to replace our own hand-made IPC with dbus and make use of
dbus more in LXDE.
It's possible to use dbus inside menu-cache and in the session manager.
PCManFM might also use it for IPC and to provide some interfaces to other
applications.

The second issue is the use of C++ in LXDE. Currently we mainly use C and in
the future there might be vala.
Doing programming in pure C is quite inefficient and error-prone on memory
management sometimes.
In C++, things can be better encapsulated if it's used carefully.
There also exists some very high quality libraries, such as boost and some
tools provided by google.
Using C++ inside LXDE only introduces one additional runtime lib,
libstdc++6.so.
So actually I'm considering the possibility of using C++ in PCManFM.
Implement some new features with C++ will be much easier than doing it with
pure C.
With C++, the development can be more rapid and we can utilize many nice
existing libs.
Later, I'll try to use C++ inside PCManFM is feasible and will do some
experiments in git branches.
Of course, the program should be kept as fast as old versions and memory
usage cannot significantly increase.
Otherwise, I won't use it.

Cheers!
