I'm the same way. Personally, I'd prefer if Wubi wasn't available for
the main Ubuntu CD as I don't trust it to work as reliably as a normal
install or even a VM.

Google is dropping H264 support:

Firefox might do that in the future also, but it costs memory to
sandbox each browser tab. And I believe Chromium cheats: when
available memory gets too low, tabs begin sharing the same process so
it's a bit harder to know what's really going on.

> All in all I am in flavor of Chromium as its still faster and offers the

That's a bit subjective as Firefox also offers unique features: It's
possible to run a few hundred tabs in Firefox; the design of
Chromium's tabbar makes that much more painful in Chromium. Firefox
has a much more powerful addon framework (although Chromium may
improve this next year). The user has more control over his data with
Firefox Sync than with Google's version.

While I'm not a Google-hater, I think it's very important for the free
web that Mozilla continues to exist. Since Mozilla is a bit more open
than Chromium and multiple steps more open than Android, I think open
source fans should consider supporting Firefox if the features are
nearly equal, which in my opinion they are. This is why I hope Firefox
continues to remain the Ubuntu default browser. Since Lubuntu has
different constraints in choosing default apps, I'll let Julien and
the Lubuntu devs make their own evaluation. Both browsers are fully
supported in Ubuntu (Canonical is looking to hire someone who can help
maintain Chromium).

No, the Ubuntu Firefox and Chromium packages don't use the built-in

Make sure you are doing your tests with a clean browser profile. An
easy, safe way to do that is to create a new user and login to the new
account.

GTK2 will be in the Ubuntu repositories for years to come. A goal is
to get it off the main Ubuntu CD but that doesn't look likely for
Ubuntu 12.04.

The Banshee decision is being made based on a number of factors, not
just GTK2 and Microsoft fear.

I believe Long Term Support only applies to the software on the LTS
CDs. For instance, Firefox will be supported; Chromium won't be. Unity
is, GNOME Shell isn't. GNOME Fallback probably will be supported since
it's on the Edubuntu DVD. The community can fix bugs in other apps;
they just don't have the Ubuntu/Canonical promise.

No, Lubuntu is not suddenly run by Canonical just because it's now an
official variant. I don't believe Kubuntu has ever used the Ubuntu
Software Center; they current use Muon. Kubuntu never switched the
window buttons to the left and so on...

Yes, a lot of the functionality that used to be in gnome-power-manager
was moved to gnome-settings-daemon.

gconf should be going away with time. I think the main Ubuntu 11.10 CD
won't have gconf on it; it's not there yet but it's one of the Desktop
Team goals. It's deprecated in Gnome but it will take a while for all
apps to port to gsettings/dconf.

Phill, what's your question? Synaptic was removed from the default
Ubuntu install, presumably to save space and most users are expected
to be using Ubuntu Software Center (USC) and Update Manager. Synaptic
is of course still supported in the repositories because a lot of
people still use it. Removing Synaptic has been discussed/planned ever
since USC was called software-store, especially since Synaptic has a
lot of confusing buttons.

And at the recent UDS, it was decided to include Deja Dup by default
for backups. Apparently, it now has Ubuntu One support but I haven't
tried it.

Actually never mind, this is fixed with Pidgin 2.8 which was uploaded

NetworkManager 0.9 changed its API and the version of Pidgin in the
Ubuntu repositories hasn't been updated for this change yet. Pidgin
checks for network connectivity and does not get the expected response
from NetworkManager.

The NetworkManager update was mentioned in the Ubuntu alpha release

This file tells apt not to attempt to autoremove old kernels:
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/01autoremove

I have never tried changing it. I believe it is there as a safety net in
case a newer kernel doesn't work, you can go back to an older kernel
while those that care can remove the older kernels manually.

Be careful about how low you set the number. It can make it difficult
to install any additional software and likely more worrying, it can be
impossible to upgrade if there is not space to download and unpack the
updates.

Tom, please remember the Code of Conduct http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct

Ubuntu developers are obviously interested in providing the best
experience for users. Personal attacks at the Ubuntu developers,
designers and community don't do anybody any good.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu apt: links

2011-04-21 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The fix for http://pad.lv/426215 may cause apt: links not to work if
Software Center is not installed, which may be the case in Lubuntu. I don't
have Lubuntu around to test so I can't tell for sure if all you need is an
extra entry to your defaults.list in lubuntu-settings or not.

I apologize for any inconvenience.
