Re: [lubuntu-users] Hardware Usage Stats

2016-08-15 Thread Simon Quigley
Hi everyone,

As said in previous emails, this isn't really needed, we're only waiting
on one more person's approval to send out a survey on this subject.

Have a nice day!

Re: [lubuntu-users] Hardware Usage Stats

2016-08-15 Thread scrooyahoo

scrooyahoo,

I don't know where the results are posted, but I've responded to a
Brian Quigley of Canonical twice (once in 2014 and once in 2106)
asking about the ratio of 32 bit users versus 64 bit for Ubuntu and
derivatives. I responded with the numbers I had for downloads of the
C4C Lubuntu ReSpin - and as leader of a group who's refurbished and
given away 500+ computers loaded with it.

I momentarily found the results from the 2014 survey with bar charts
and eveything just last week while followng this thread but can't seem
to find it again. And I couldn't locate the 2016 results posted
anywhere.

But, Brian Quigley himself would know. You might email him. Here's his
blog post from this year asking for people to take the survey (polling
is closed)

Thanks Eric,

Are these perhaps those figures?
https://bryanquigley.com/crazy-ideas/32-bit-usage-survey-results

I'll send Brian a mail

Also i found these stats
https://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10=0
Under Operating System Share > Desktop I found a few remarkable figures
saying 10% is still running on XP in 2016!?
This still doesn't say anything about the actual hardware... I mean XP
can run on a Core2Quad as well.
But lets say if 1% of all the people who are online would for instance
still use a PIII That's still an awful lot of people. Except actual
figures are hard to find.
When you ask google, then the results will most likely be biased to
Android hardware, If you find figures cooked by microsoft then the
picture is again out of balance. So to avoid biased figures it would be
good to find figures from a few sources independant from the industry.

In the past I have seen charts but for some strange reason i can't find
much data on this in 2016. Not even from big G...
If anyone should be able to plot this chart it would be Google right?
:-)

[lubuntu-users] Hardware Usage Stats

2016-08-15 Thread Eric Bradshaw

Does anyone know if there are stats available from Canonical or 3rd
party about hardware.

How many computers with PII, PIII, P4 CPU's etc., browsed the various
Ubuntu websites?
In what parts of the world are they used most
What OS are they using?
I came across several websites with some stats but nothing really useful
to form an opinion on questions like the 700MB capacity limit.

It's clear that it is a technical challenge to stay within that limit.
But it is not clear how big the demand is on a global scale to have a
capable OS that can be installed on old hardware without having to jump
trough hoops.

How many boxes still run XP? (or anything worse)
How many boxes run a distro that's no longer supported?
What display size is used on those machines?

Can it be estimated if DVD players are covered on most hardware, or will
there still be a large demand for CD-ROM?.

Regardless if the 700MB limit will be left behind it will be very
interesting to know how many people still rely on old hardware.

Canonical's data would be interesting, but an independent source would
also be good. Or Google's stats, if they still can be trusted... I'm
currently connected trough TOR so Google isn't much help to me

[lubuntu-users] Bug or user error when trying to connect to tty serial

2016-08-15 Thread scrooyahoo
Guys i think i have spotted a BUG, but i first need to know if i'm doing
something wrong here.

Today i had a struggle to connect to a openWRT router over tty
Specifically a USB tty dongle..

I installed Minicom, Cutecom, Putty and screen,

I only manage to connect with minicom and screen.

Cutecom and Putty all refuse to connect
I have the feeling that there is a permission issue.

sudo screen /dev/ttyUSB3 115200
works fine. Now i wonder if the GUI based applicatoins are not getting
the correct permissions on launch.

When trying Cutecom it displays
Could not open /dev/ttyUSB3

Putty exits with: PuTTY Fatal error.

All configured with the correct baudrates etc.

Also Minicom doesn't appear to behave as expected. I don't use these
applications all that often so it may very well be a user error.

This is a pet peeve of mine.

There is a work around - when the mouse pointer disappears, press the CTRL
ALT F1 keys altogether. This should take you to a black and white text
screen. Then press CTRL ALT F7 keys altogether. This should take you back
to your main screen and your mouse pointer should now be visible.

A friend of mine has a strange keyboard - he has to press FN LOCK first
before this approach will work.

BW,

Ian

[lubuntu-users] Panel Settings and Power Manager problem?

2016-08-15 Thread Marlon Ng
Hi. My desktop runs Lubuntu 16.04.1.

If the system becomes inactive for awhile, the monitor seems to turn off,
and I have to press any key on the keyboard or move the mouse for it to
turn back on, then I have to enter my password to get back into the
system. Is this called "sleeping"?

Anyway, the problem is that when I log back in, the mouse pointer becomes
invisible; it's still there, but I just can't see it. I know this because
when I attempt to move the mouse pointer towards the panel, the objects
light up, for instance when I move the mouse pointer over the objects in
the Application Launch Bar. The problem is that the pointer is invisible.

Also, when I go the Panel Settings and try to change the color of the font,
it won't change right away. I have to log out then log back in to see the
change in color.

That's it for now.
Thanks
