Top posting, without carats . . . because I'm in a hurry . . . .  The nice
thing about linux is that you can have multiple DE's added to one base
install . . . so you don't have to choose just one; you can log out of
Xu/xfce and log into lxde . . . or vice versa.  There are some DE's that
aren't entirely compatible with each other and/or offer overlaps . . . but
if space isn't entirely at a premium then xfce & lxde are pretty compatible
. . . enjoy.

I might have a solution to that problem. Start Synaptic Package Manager
(SPM), click on "Search". On the resulting dialogue box (marked "Find"),
there should be an option labelled "Look in", probably with the value
"Description and Name". Click on it and select "Name". Doing that on my
system for GIMP generates 37 results instead of 122.
