I have never heard of typing speed being a problem!

Suggestions: connect via a cable, do a full update, add the
lubuntu-restricted-extras package. This often gets things working.

In one or more prior releases, wireless would fail to connect if I
didn't quickly enter the password (which was hard in my case, as it was
lengthy). It seems if it once failed, it would continue to fail, over
and over again.

I avoided the problem by typing the passphrase first in a Leafpad editor
window, then select and copy it, then select the wireless to connect-to,
pasting the copied text into it and (quickly) telling it to connect.

There is a new, different problem with 17.04, where USB wireless will
not connect at all (and how fast you do it has no effect).

There is a configuration-file work-around for this new problem.

Michael:

There is a problem with wireless dongles (USB) with all flavors of
Ubuntu, including Lubuntu. It has been reported, and acknowledged, but
it appears the developers expect all of the manufacturers to change
their drivers to handle a new feature that effectively makes wireless
stop working for many of us.

Fortunately, there is a work-around, which will fix things while they
wait for all the manufacturers to change their handlers.

In a terminal, enter the following commands:

sudo -H leafpad /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

Enter your password, and a Leafpad window should appear.

Go down to the last line, insert a line, then enter the following lines:

[device]

wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=0

Save the resulting file (in the Leafpad window), then reboot, and you
wireless will then start working.

Needing to reboot means you have to install from DVD or USB with no
Internet connection. But this seems to work okay for me (so far).
After installing, I do the above steps, reboot, and then with Internet
access via wireless), I can install all updates.

Apparently 17.04 also has the 2 minute limit, so I have to say that the
original password problem probably has nothing to do with typing speed.

I just used my 32bit netbook to run some experiments with various "LiveCD"
releases.
13.10, 15.10 and 16.10 all allow about 2 minutes for wifi password entry. 16.04
times out in 19 seconds.
I now have a 17.04 download in progress.

Please do not top-post on the mailing list. It makes threads
impossible to follow. Your reply should go _underneath_ the text
you're responding to.

I recall seeing it in the past during install. (Not saying it's fixed now.
I just haven't seen it in a year or so. Maybe because I type fast enough.).

I haven't tried 17.04 yet but my first thought is that there is nothing wrong
with the password. You just aren't typing it quickly enough. With other
versions of Lubuntu there is a time limit of about 20 seconds. Copying the
password letter by letter from a reference card or the back of the box can be
too slow. It had me baffled for a while.
