Re: [lubuntu-users] Unexpected system restart requested.

2016-05-28 Thread Simon Quigley
Greetings,

The difference between restarting after a regular software update and a release
update is that the latter usually requires a restart just to be safe. For
example, 14.04 -> 16.04 is two years of software updates. Open source software
really evolves in that timespan. So if it is just a few updates, I totally see
your point. But for something as massive as a release update, to be safe, you
should restart.

Hope that clears things up!

Thanks for the prompt reply and apologies for attaching my enquiry to the
Lubuntu-users Digest message. When it comes to mailing lists, I don't quite
understand how Thunderbird works.

Is there something unusual about those packages or is this a change in policy?
It has been my experience since 6.06 that, unlike Windows, Linux usually does
not need a restart with software updates. I don't know about other people, but
once I get my desktop layout the way I want it, I'm in no hurry to restart and
some of my PCs run for several days or even months without a restart.

Greetings,

All of the packages are updated, and in those packages are system services that
need to be restarted for the update to be applied. It's just easier to reboot
than to have to restart each process one by one.

[lubuntu-users] Unexpected system restart requested.

2016-05-28 Thread E James
I'm curious. Can anyone enlighten me? What is it about the latest updates to
14.04 that requires a system restart? I thought it was only kernel updates that
needed a restart and I see no evidence of a kernel update in the list.
