Just wanted to chime-in and lament the loss of the PPC *and the P4.* 
When Computers4Christians started, I was the "Mac guy." I greatly 
enjoyed giving a new life to PowerPC Macs for a good while, but soon the 
demands of the Internet made all but the most souped-up PPC Macs 
impossible to give away and feel good about it. The same thing happened 
roughly two years ago with i386/32-bit/P4 computers (PIII was already 
too old in 2011). Technology marches on - and on the Internet - that's 
video technology. Even when a parent says they just need their child/ren 
to be able to do homework - that now necessitates that computer being 
able to reliably stream video.

Hi All,

Regarding the Firefox crash. Using Synaptic Package manager I installed the
Firefox debug symbols package firefox-dbg.

I then ran Firefox 3 times in gdb. It consistently crashes in a function
being called by:-
/build/firefox-wWifUV/firefox-53.0.2+build1/js/src/jit/BaselineJIT.cpp:157

I've attached more detailed files to this message.

I believe that Firefox is creating object code on the fly that is not
always compatible with some 32-bit systems.

Before I can prove that I'll have to learn how to use gdb a bit better,
look at the Firefox source code first and also brush up on my assembly
language.

Well personally I do not have my pentium IV desktops hooked up at all anymore 
they just seem slow power hungry and loud when I have better hardware even 
though I did get into lubuntu so I could have it both on my core 2 duo laptop 
and my pentium IV desktop. Honestly I find it a bit wierd that the laptop I am 
typing this email on now will be turning 8 years old in a few years. Well thing 
is I prefer this laptop to a three year old cheap one do to changes in how the 
laptop cases and thickness were made. Granted this thing is heavy but I can 
only unscrew 4 screws to upgrade the hard drive to an ssd which I did. I have 
something similar for ram and wireless.
 I have 4 usb 2.0 ports ethernet vga and hdmi outputs dvd drive and a card 
reader while new laptops do not have this many ports on them. My mom bought a 
cheap hp laptop without consulting me and I still prefer this one mainly with 
the good ssd I have in it. I really doubt this will struggle that much in just 
over two years it seems like. I also like the scissor switch keyboard more than 
the chiclet one built into newer laptops.

A while ago I replaced my around ten years old 64 bit dual-core
mobo/CPU with a newer elCheapo 64 bit dual-core mobo/CPU. It doesn't

and maxed out at 2GB RAM . . . could do a reasonable job as doing

seems to be the other problem with pushing old hardware . . . it

I'd say that obviously you are enjoying keeping your "old" hardware 
going by finding ways to do what newer tech does with ease . . . at 
some point either Lu will "drop" support or drivers for Pentium3, or 
the 512MB RAM will just not have the juice to do anything . . . and, 
the machines will just have one function--your music endeavors . . . 
until the "end of its days" and the mobo wheezes it's last sound byte

I sympathize with your viewpoint.

In writing my original e-mail of the stream, I wasn't asking that 
Pentium 3 machines again be fully supported, though I do (as you) lament 
their demise.


I was just glad to report how I had come up with a rather different way 
of making it work for me, and that it did work as a music workstation.


I do lament the coming demise of all 32-bit machines, but I will move 
on, when it is necessary to do so.


I will be putting out (sometime this year) a KeyMusician Newsletter 
article an rescuing older machines, using them as musical instruments.

The Windows version of Firefox, running on Lubuntu using wine, installed 
using winetricks, works well enough for what I need.  This version of 
Firefox does not crash on Pentium 3 machines.

Do we know how much RAM is available?

I don't think just about how much RAM is displayed by e.g.

   $ sudo hwinfo --memory

and/or

   $ free

etc., but what actually does running   Memtest 86+   for several passes
display?

Is there any output when running Firefox, Chromium, Qupzilla and Midori
from command line and/or in   ~/.xsession-errors  ?

There are tons of other possible culprits as well! E.g. is the HDD or
SSD intact?

Thank you for your insight.

The machine has 512 megabytes of RAM, and the only thing I was running 
was the Internet browser, which I was always able to do in the past.


I had assumed the system was fine, having run my other tests.  In these 
cases (where I upgraded), I didn't need to browse the Internet to 
install the application.


Internet browsers do have high RAM requirements, so your idea is 
reasonable.


The browser I first tried was Firefox, which crashed.

The browser I got to work (the Windows version, using Wine) was also 
Firefox.


In earlier testing (on 16.10), I installed a version of the ZynAddSubFX 
synthesizer from the Debian unstable repository, which worked on all my 
other machines, but crashed on this particular machine.  In looking at 
the problem report (from apport), as I recall, it was because of an 
illegal instruction (attempt to use a machine language instruction the 
hardware does not support).


So I was assuming it was the same problem with the browser.

That viewpoint is probably more likely, where in using Firefox 
successfully on Lubuntu 16.04 earlier, but now with the latest updates, 
it always crashes.


I probably should try it again, and see what the detailed crash report 
says.  I did submit the original crash report.

Do they crash when browsing and/or downloading? If they crash during a
download, are you downloading to a tmpfs?

If so, run

  df | grep tmpfs

to see if tmpfs still provides free space. By default it's limited to
half of the available RAM. You could enlarge it by a fstab entry.
e.g.

tmpfs  /tmp  tmpfs nodev,nosuid,size=3G  0 0
    add the path ;). ^^
 ^^ replace this with a size
 smaller than the available
 memory ;).

I use ffmpeg a lot. It comes as a single binary file which I just copy to 
whatever working directory I have in mind.

Please note PC4. It was running Lubuntu 12.04 and ffmpeg wouldn't work so I 
upgraded to 14.04. ffmpeg still wouldn't work.
On closer examination of the error messages I realised that the 2003 CPU didn't 
support some of the instructions ffmpeg was trying to use, so I compiled ffmpeg 
on that PC and it works well. It would be my guess that the Lubuntu system 
software is able to identify the CPU capabilities and run the appropriate code 
but Firefox etc. is not that careful.

I noticed in the minimum system requirements for Lubuntu 17.04, that a 
Pentium 4, or perhaps a Pentium M is required.


I have two Pentium 3 machines, on which I successfully tested Lubuntu 
16.10, and later upgraded them to 17.04.


These machines passed my basic sequence of tests, using them as music 
workstations.  I concluded that Lubuntu works (for my music software) on 
Pentium 3 machines.


But on attempting to browse the web (using Firefox) to download my 
latest music software, the browser crashes!


I tried Chromium, and it also crashes.

I tried Qupzilla, and Midori, and they, too, crashed.

I remember that I had noticed browser crashes when I tested Lubuntu 
16.10, as well.


So I figured that the reason a Pentium 4 is required for Lubuntu 17.04, 
has to do with the lack of a working browser.


I then concluded I would just have to use Lubuntu 16.04 on these 
machines until its support runs out.  But on testing this, I find that 
with a fully updated Lubuntu 16.04 machine, when I try to run Firefox on
