Re: [LUG] [TechPost] Linux development Report: Samsung among top sponsors, Tizen closer than you think

2013-09-17 Thread okwii David
Peter,

Let's say Linux is getting mobilized of recent (2012-to date) from the
number of cooperate sponsors contributing code to the kernel. Otherwise,
since Android -- which runs on the linux kernel -- accounts for more than
80% of smartphone marketshare already and still growing, then we can say
that Linux is already mobilized. Couple that with upcoming Linux based
Mobile OSes like Tizen, Sailfish, Ubuntu mobile and Firefox OS.

Its absurd though, that Nokia which used to be a top contributor (back in
the days of meego) has completely dropped out!

 David,

A bit unfair to call Linux mobilized when Samsung's sponsorship only
amounts to 3.4% versus RedHat's 25.7% and The Linux Foundations 12%.

Also, the image in your blog post should clarify that the top 10
developers only measures from kernel version 3.2 to 3.10.

Reading deeper into the report, the most pleasing aspect for me is that
people doing Linux kernel development for free - i.e. not aligned to any
company is still the largest block of developers.

Another interesting thing was that Ubuntu - probably the most well-known
desktop Linux - doesn't appear anywhere in the report.

2013-09-17 Thread Peter C. Ndikuwera
I understand all that. Just think that your article doesn't clearly
point out that mobile contribution to the Linux kernel is actually
pretty minimal.

Android is all Google - so even with X billion Android devices, the
amount of actual kernel contribution from Google doesn't increase.
