I think one should use several search terms if one does not get you to
the proper source. I was looking for a table book consort manuscript
Add. 31390 and it only showed the typewritten description of another
related manuscript. So I tried the title, "In nomines" and it took me
to Add. 31390. And I found the special piece I was looking for. But
it was NOT cited in the typewritten table of contents!! The title was
very difficult to decipher. But it was there.
The message is try and try again. Altogether there are 995 manuscript
available online!!! 335 are music manuscripts. This information came

[LUTE] Re: what about the lute database

2017-08-02 Thread Martyn Hodgson
I like Kenneth's idea of something similar to the piano site he
mentioned ie completed by 'members'. I looked at it and, whilst it's
seems a bit overcomplicated for basic lute data needs, the principle
   seems good.
The idea of 'members' entering details of instruments they come across
rather than one, possibly transient, person seems the better way to
ensure upkeep and might encourage more entries. Clearly, there would
need to be a facility (like with Wikipedia perhaps) for informed
corrections to be made. Possibly the most open way would be to publish
the list of these in date order - might also encourage accuracy. I also
think any such list needs more descriptive entries than currently
allowed (eg various string lengths for fingered strings, open basses).
Pohlmann's laudable attempts at something similar have sometimes been
disparaged - but seem to me along similar right lines.
One final thought: should modern instruments be allowed if they are
after historic models? In principle I don't see why not - but if not,
   what cut-off date would be suggested: 1800; 1860; 1910;
   1960,.?

[LUTE] Re: Digitised Music Mss at Brirish Librarfy

2017-08-02 Thread Arthur Ness
I think one should use several search terms if one does not get you to
the proper source. I was looking for a table book consort manuscript
Add. 31390 and it only showed the typewritten description of another
related manuscript. So I tried the title, "In nomines" and it took me
to Add. 31390. And I found the special piece I was looking for. But
it was NOT cited in the typewritten table of contents!! The title was
very difficult to decipher. But it was there.
The message is try and try again. Altogether there are 995 manuscript
available online!!! 335 are music manuscripts. This information came
from RISM. Here is a complete list of all 335:

How do you track down individual manuscript?. so far I haven't found an
entry for Murcia's Passacalles y obras which is Add. Ms 31640 but
perhaps it is not included. Is there a cut off date?

2017-08-02 Thread T.Kakinami
Monica,

I only use “Quick Search” top of the screen with key word, lute, guitar, etc.
I searched with “Add MS 31640” then I could not find that.
Next of Add MS 31390 was Add MS 31748.

[LUTE] what about the lute database

2017-08-02 Thread wayne lute
Hi -

There is a database of original lutes at
http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~lsa/associated/database/dbsearch.php
 which at
one time seemed like an active project, but it looks like nothing has happened
in ten years. Can anyone tell me what happened to this project? I was
reminded of it because I had to do some repair work to it. It was sponsored by
the Lute Society or America but I don’t see it on their new web site.

 Wayne
